Santa Barbara City Fire Department - Standard Operating Procedures Training Operations Code: T-II-16 Progressive Hose Lay and Packing the Modified Gasner Pack Chpt: II Hose Lays Revised: 2/13/13 Pages: 10 I. Purpose A. To describe the proper sequence of the Progressive Hose Lay using the Modified Gasner Hose packs. B. To describe the proper technique to rebuild the Modified Gasner Hose packs. II. Progressive Hose Lay Instructions from a Type III engine Firefighter and Captain grab wild land hose packs. Engineer sets rig in pump and prepares for pumping operations. Charges 100 hose reel. Firefighter grabs charged 100 hose reel to start the fire attack. This will allow the firefighter to advance and fight fire with 1 line. Captain confirms LCES is secure, and PPE is worn. (SOP S-IV-3) Before the Firefighter continues with the hose lay, the Firefighter will stop at the rear of the engine and lets the Engineer pull a minimum of 10 of 1½ (100 trunk-line) hose off the firefighter s pack. Page 1 of 10

Engineer connects the 1½ trunk-line from the hose pack to the engine. This line becomes the trunk-line and will continue throughout the operation. Engineer prepares to charge the trunk-line. (Do not charge until they call for water.) Firefighter advances/attacks fire while laying the 100 trunk-line using the 1 hose reel hose as the attack line. Lean forward while walking and advancing the trunk-line, it will deploy smoother out of the pack. Captain should follow firefighter and let the firefighter know when they re almost out of trunk-line and prepare to stop. When the trunk-line is fully deployed, the Firefighter removes the pack and lays it down on the ground. Firefighter unclips the 100 of 1 hose in the modified Gasner pack. Page 2 of 10

Firefighter pulls out the 1 line and lays it flat on the ground. Open up the roll to prepare the bundle to be charged. Keep the wild land pack connected to the trunk-line. Don t let the packs walk/blow away. When ready, the Firefighter calls for water making sure the gated wye is closed. The engineer will charge the trunk-line. Make sure the 1 hose is spread open on the ground. Captain stands near pack and wye on the ground and prepares to advance the hose lay. The Captain will take uncharged 1 hose line and nozzle from previous pack to be used while advancing trunk-line from the pack. Firefighter pulls 6-10 feet of the 1½ trunkline from the Captain s pack. Page 3 of 10

Firefighter connects trunk-line hose from the Captain s pack to the gated wye. Charge the 1 attack line when ready. Do not charge the trunk-line until it is fully deployed and the Captain has called for water. Captain now continues forward with the 1 attack line, while laying the 1½ trunk-line dry. When the trunk-line is fully deployed, the Captain removes the pack and lays it down on the ground. Captain pulls out the 1 line and lays it flat on the ground. Open up the roll to prepare the bundle to be charged. When ready, the Captain calls for water making sure the gated wye is closed. The Firefighter then charges the trunk-line from the wye. Once the trunk-line is charged the Firefighter will either continue up the line to assist, or return to the rig and grab another pack to progress the line ahead. Page 4 of 10

The progressive hose lay then continues with subsequent packs using the same steps as above. The Engineer will need to keep track of how many packs are out and elevation changes to ensure the engine pressure is adequate at the nozzle. III. Building the Modified Gasner Hose Pack The compliment of supplies needed to build the Modified Gasner Pack. 100 feet of 1 hose 100 feet of 1½ hose Gated wye 1½ to 1 reducer Nozzle Modified Gasner Pack Use the primer pump if you are rebuilding the pack out in the field. This is to vacuum the air out of the hose to allow for a better fit in the pack. This is an essential part to the success of a well built pack. Connect the gated wye or the nozzle to the male end of the hose. Close the valves to create an air tight seal prior to using the primer pump. Page 5 of 10

As an option in the station you can use the SHOP VAC to vacuum the air out of the hose. You will need tape, 1½ double male, and a reducer. This will create a vacuum much faster than the primer pump. With the nozzle in place on the 1 hose, make a mark at 42 inches for the first fold. Fold the hose over itself to start coiling your hose. Make sure the 1 hose is laid out straight with the vacuum still on. Continue to coil the hose in a circular motion. This is best done at the station (if possible) on the apparatus floor. Keep a 3 foot tail after the hose is coiled and remove the primer pump. Page 6 of 10

Lay the Modified Gasner Pack out flat on the surface with the clips fully extended. The 1 hose is always on the bottom of the pack. The tag end of the 1 hose will play out from the bottom of the pack. Tighten up the straps and put the bottom of the hose on the stitching line of the Modified Gasner Pack. With the gated wye connected to the 1½ hose (as shown) leave a length of hose measured from your elbow to your finger tips, approximately 16-18. Start the hose load on the left side of the box (looking at the box from the open side). With the vacuum still running, run the hose around the inside of the box. Page 7 of 10

Leave about a 1 difference between the accordion folds. Continue this process until you have between a 5 to 6 foot tail. Slide the box with the 1½ hose still in it behind the connected 1 pack. Make sure that the straps are fully extended. Put the box on top of the hose pack and slide the 1½ hose into the pack. Page 8 of 10

Connect the straps but DON T over tighten. You can tighten up the straps later. This will make it easier to run the hose thru the side pocket. Make sure the 1½ to 1 reducer is on the left side of the wye looking at the pack from the bottom end of the pack. Then connect the 1 tail. Make sure the 1½ tail runs under the right side shoulder strap (again looking at the pack from the bottom end). Bend the hose over itself and run it up the side pocket with the coupling hanging out of the bottom. Tighten up the straps nice and tight, this will keep the hose firmly in place. Page 9 of 10

The bottom strap needs to secure the wye tightly in place. The Modified Gasner Pack is complete and ready. Page 10 of 10
