All about sharks With fun shark facts, puzzels, coloring, and more!

SHARK FACTS nurse shark Nurse sharks are one of the most common shark species in the Caribbean. You usually find them resting on the ocean floor. Fins Most shark species have eight fins, which they use to propel forward and swim straight. The shape of the fins depends on where the shark lives. The fins of nurse sharks are flat at the bottom, because they mainly live on the ocean floor. Tiger sharks have a large tail fin for extra swimming power during their long migrations. Nose Sharks have an incredible sense of smell. Imagine smelling a chocolate cookie from the opposite side of a soccer field. Almost 66% of the brain of a shark is used to detect smells. Hammerhead shark The eyes of hammerhead sharks are placed on the sides of its head, allowing the shark to see in all directions. Eyes A sharks eye works the same as a human s, although sharks cannot blink. And sharks can see in water much better. They can even see in dark or murky water. tiger shark Tiger sharks get their name from the tiger-like, black stripes that cover the body of young animals. As animals become older, these stripes fade away. Sawfish The sawfish uses its saw (snout) to find food in the sand and to prick the food with the tips like a fork. Mouth Just like humans, sharks use the taste buds in their mouth to test if something is edible. To ensure that a shark never loses its sharp teeth, it develops new ones throughout its entire life. If a tooth is lost, another one moves forward to replace it. Ampullae of Lorenzini Ears Sharks do have ears, but they re merely small holes on both sides of their head. Their hearing is excellent. Sharks often hear their prey long before they can actually see it. These are small black dots on the nose of a shark with which they sense electric pulses. Fish and other animals generate these small electric vibrations by moving. The ampullae of Lorenzini make sharks better hunters. manta ray Manta rays swim in open ocean waters and catch tiny shrimps and algae with their sticky gills. They got their name from the Spanish word manta, which means blanket. whale shark Whale sharks are the largest species of fish on earth. They grow more than 18 meters long and weigh over 12 tons. They are in no way related to whales, but just like many whale species, they eat small floating animals called plankton.

Globally, they are threatened by man. We can make sure that these amazing animals are protected. Help us! In the seas around Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, Saba, St. Maarten, and St. Eustatius, you find a number of special shark species such as hammerhead shark and tiger sharks. The islands are where they find food and have their young. As Save Our Sharks, we will protect the sharks. And you can help us. 1 Stick up for sharks and tell people how beautiful they are. 4 7 3 2 Tell people that sharks are not man-eating monsters. Convince your parents, friends, and the rest of your family to use less plastic bags. Recycle your trash. Be a good junior scientist and ask questions about sharks. 6 5 Do Paper Plastic Glass not litter the beaches or throw trash in the water. Write a paper or give a class presentation about sharks. 29 5 4 3 2 30 1 31 Every little bit helps!
