4 CAMP LEADERS Preparation Tips Liam Cutler, one of our National Team Summer Camp Veterans has spent his last 3 years working at the Camp Leaders Job Fairs. Here are his top tips to help you prepare for the big day. Do Your Research Pick out some camps that sound great and find out about them. What is their camps specialism and what activities do they offer? Why is their camp great? Find out cool facts about the camp. If you sound like you know about their camp when you speak to them, this will make a lot of difference. If you sound like you are really enthusiastic about their camp, they are going to value that a lot. Camps have even been known to create positions for people who will fit in well, but there isn t necessarily a position for them. But, don t set your heart on just one camp. Some on the day might just speak to the one. But, if the one doesn t love you back you need to accept it. Perhaps research 5 to 10 in detail, but be prepared to speak to others if things don t work out.
CAMP LEADERS 5 Making The First Impression When you get the chance to speak to a camp, that first impression counts. This first conversation will be the difference between you getting an interview with the camp, and not. Make sure you have them engaged in the first 30 seconds! (This is where your research will play in your favour) Tell them your name, a bit about you, your skills and experience and why you want to work for them. Don t over-think or stress, just be yourself. Show Those Skills The job fair is really your chance to shine, so make the most of it. Camps love to hear about your experiences. But go one further show it! As a starter, print of a load of your application PDFs. If you can give something for the camp to hold onto, they are more likely to remember you, as they can read back through it. Bring along photos and certificates for your skills too. If you have an ipad put them on there. Camps will love to see your FA Level 2, Go Pro footage of you kayaking or your photography portfolio. You could go even more all out...why show them a photo, when you can show camps IN PERSON. In previous years, there have been people bringing guitars, pom-poms and basketballs and will show off their skills in the middle of the fair - one guy got his cards out in the middle of one of the fairs last year and performed magic. That takes confidence and initiative and will make you look great.

CAMP LEADERS 7 What to Wear Whilst the Camp Leaders Job Fairs are technically interviews it s important to remember that it s not a formal one. The Camp Directors want to get to know the real you so you can dress to reflect that. We ve found that casual smart is always a winner. Remember, if you re going to be looking after campers all summer you ll want to show you can look after yourself. This means, brushing your hair, cleaning your teeth and making sure your finger nails are clean! Image matters. Also, it s January and the weather is cold. If you arrive early you might be standing outside in the queue for a short period of time, so bring a warm jacket! What to Bring A print off of your Camp Leaders Online Application Form This Job Fair Guide Coaching Certificates/Awards Pictures An Ipad (If you have videos you might want to show them) Instruments/accessories to help demonstrate your talent Warm clothing Lunch Food & Drink Money (We ll be selling our new 2017 Camp Leaders merch there!) CAMP LEADERS 15 If Things Don t Go To Plan Like every job interview in the world, not everyone can be hired for the same position and our Job Fairs are no exception. There will be a lot of people attending and not everyone will be hired on the day. Maybe you just had an off day and didn t interview well or maybe the camps you really wanted didn t match up with the position you wanted. The important thing is not to worry or beat yourself up about missing out. Your time WILL come. That s why we have our online database where over 80% of people get hired by over 500+ camp directors. So, if you don t find the perfect camp or position on the day then there is loads of time and a far higher chance of getting placed through this system. Here s a few top tips you can look to do in your spare time to improve your online application. Top Tip #1. Big Yourself Up Take time over your skills section and don t be afraid to big yourself up. Describe your skills and knowledge in a way that makes you sound like the real deal. Camp Directors are looking for people that are flexible & adaptable so that extra spark in your writing will help you stand out. Note the difference in quality between these two examples...
16 CAMP LEADERS I ve played tennis for years and love teaching it to kids. I really want to spend a summer at camp as a tennis coach helping kids learn the game I m comfortable teaching tennis to kids of all ages, from grassroots level to High School players. My own coaching experience and knowledge of the game means I would be able to work with any age group at camp and help them develop their skills and understanding of tennis. I m organised, flexible and adaptable so even if it rains, i ll have something great prepared! Think of some keywords and terms you can use in each section. Top Tip #2. Clean Up Your Game Camp Directors will be viewing your online application but there s no knowing whether they are checking your social media channels as well to find out more about you. Inappropriate pictures or statuses are not going to paint a pretty picture of you so make sure you clean up your Facebook page and Twitter feed. At the end of the summer at camp, Directors always give a speech to their staff about campers trying to find you on social media so it s better to get into good practice now. Your Facebook is your unofficial CV, get it cleaned up.
CAMP LEADERS 17 Top Tip #3. Make A Showcase Video When I was applying to camp I didn t make a showcase video because I was too worried that my friends would see it. What I didn t realise is how important that video can be for camp directors in the hiring process. I ve already said how you write is important, well a video is gold dust. This is your chance for camp directors to really see you and get to know you. Bring personality, you don t have to be really cringe and cliche, just be yourself. A few things I would think about for the video... Don t film outside if it s windy, it s hard for directors to make out what you re saying. Don t film at your computer desk, get a little more creative! If you re applying for a skills position try demonstrate your skill for 10-15 seconds in the video. Keep it short, no more than a minute long. Camp Directors will be looking at dozens of videos and profiles. Speak clearly, don t be shy. Be confident. Just like your writing, get your keywords into the video.
