Edinburgh Waverley capacity upgrade As part of our rail upgrade plan, and in order to facilitate the introduction of longer trains and to prepare for projected future growth in demand for both track and capacity, a series of infrastructure works will be required within and around Edinburgh Waverley.

We need to extend platforms at Edinburgh Waverley to accommodate longer trains being introduced on both the Edinburgh to Glasgow via Falkirk (E&G) route and the East Coast Main Line (ECML). There are two programmes underway to enable the introduction of these longer trains, the Edinburgh Glasgow Improvement Programme (EGIP) and the Intercity Express Programme (IEP). EGIP is a comprehensive package of improvements to Scotland s railway infrastructure. A Scottish Government priority, EGIP is being delivered by Network Rail and includes modernisation and upgrades to key junctions and infrastructure as well as widespread electrification of the Scottish rail network. IEP is a Department for Transport led initiative to procure new trains to replace the existing rolling stock on the East Coast Mainline and Great Western Mainline. The EGIP team will deliver both EGIP and IEP s requirements for Waverley.

Timeline December 2018 Commissioning of platform 10/11 crossover April 2017 Preparatory works commence ahead of excavation for May 2017 Excavation for extension begins July 2018 Completion of platforms 5/6 May/ June 2017 Excavation for platforms 5/6 begins December 2017 Completion of

What s happening? A number of existing platforms will be extended (platforms 5, 6 and 12) creating new long length platforms A crossover a piece of track which enables trains to move from one track to another will be created to improve flexibility to platforms 10/11 The extension of will require the repositioning of the escalators on the South West corner of the concourse The demolition of the buildings on platform 11 to enable the extension of and additionally serves to open up a separate area of concourse for pedestrian circulation What it delivers This project is about creating platforms of suitable length to facilitate the safe operation of longer trains, improving the capacity of the route as well as journey times Extensions to platforms 5 & 6 are required to accommodate 10-car IEP services on East Coast routes (extended to 275m) In addition to the platform extensions, we will undertake work on the tracks to increase flexibility on approaches to the station from the east We are installing a crossover between platforms 10 and 11 which also improves operational flexibility at the station Extension to is required to accommodate 8 car services on Edinburgh to Glasgow line via Falkirk High (extended to 204m)

Edinburgh Waverley: fast facts Waverley station opened in 1846 and was rebuilt between 1892 and 1902 Waverley station was originally the site of three railway stations. North Bridge Station, General Station and Canal Street Station were not fully integrated into Waverley Station until 1898 The station is also located on the former bed of the Nor Loch which was drained in 1763 Edinburgh Waverley is Scotland s second busiest railway station with a footfall of 28m Waverley has the second largest station footprint in Great Britain (23 acres) It has 20 platforms which support circa. 900 train movements per day The station s roof is 34,000m² and is made up of around 28,000 clear glass panels There is a 40ft ascent into the station via Waverley Steps

Q&A Why are the platforms being extended? The platforms are being extended to facilitate the safe operation of eight carriage trains () and ten carriage trains (platforms 5/6), improving the capacity of the route. When will the works be delivered? Advance works commenced in 2016 with main works beginning in April 2017. Platform 12 is due to be completed in December 2017 whilst platforms 5/6 are due to be completed in July 2018. A new crossover at platforms 10/11 will be commissioned by December 2018. How will this affect the passenger experience at Edinburgh Waverley? The work will be delivered in a way which minimises disruption for station users. Station users with a disability, and who require help around the station, can call 0845 722 5225 for additional assistance. Why do you work at night? The works at Waverley station will be undertaken 24/7. It is safer for our staff and contractors to deliver work when trains are not running. We are regulated to work in a way that minimises impact on train services.
