2014 Grow out Competition 2014 FCKC Sanke Grow-Out Reminder All were siblings from the same spawn and parent fish, and approximately 5-6 inches long. A total of nine club members selected their fish after careful review and comparison, with a simple drawing determining the order of choice beforehand. Our selections were made as follows: 1) Alina and Howard Bowen 2) David and Karen Hardcastle 3) Glenn Fontan 4) Suzette and Willie Alexander 5) Don and Dale Whaley 6) Mary and Bob Cook 7) Darla and Doug Stuber 8) Libby and Jim Mattingly 9) Mark and Michelle Masters Here s hoping we see all nine koi, big and healthy, go on display at the FCKC Show this October. Remember, there will be a special category out competition, presided over by our AKJA Judges, to single out and honor the best of our 2014 Grow-Out. 3
From the VP Libby Mattingly This month's meeting will be held at Glen and Amy Fontan's in Yulee. Our guest speaker will be Dr. Carolina Le-Bert. She will have a presentation on the surgery that she did on our yamabuki. I know that the drive to Yulee may seem like a great distance but the trip is well worth it to show appreciation to our guest and to see Glen and Amy's beautiful pond and the surrounding area. Glen and Amy are expecting their first child and this may be the only time the club members will have to congratulate them! Please show your support by attending and by RSVPing our hosts. Our Koi show planning is in the works! Suzette has been busy getting the vendor and exhibitor packets ready to go out soon. As always, we will be asking for help!! Alina has found a place to purchase banners and other items that we need to get our name "out there"! She has also continued to get sponsorships and advertising for the booklet. At the board meeting, I was asked about tee shirts. We can order more if someone needs another. Please let me know at the meeting or by email if you are interested. The shirts run a little small and I suggest ordering one size larger. I hope to see everyone on Saturday at the meeting! Libby 4
From the Secretary Doug Stuber Saturday July 19, 2014 FCKC Meeting Minutes Home of Bill Torrence and Marcia Kessler 5:00 PM -- 13 Club Members in Attendance. All Board Members save Mark Masters in attendance. VP Libby presided over the meeting -- Doug read minutes from the last Board Meeting in lieu of last month s meeting minutes, which was primarily the Grow-Out fish selection program -- Treasurer Suzette gave us an updated financial report and we appear to be in good shape. Please see her for the details if desired. -- Alina covered banner and advertising options for a possible future purchase by the Club. These primarily were the vertical curb flags quite popular now, but also a table cloth banner as well. Club members looked at several cloth and logo/print samples and discussed pricing as well. Alina indicated the manufacturer needed only a couple of weeks notice to make them for us, so no decision was required today. But we would like to have them on hand by the Show in October. Doug promised to get jpeg copies of our new logo, designed by Don, to Alina ASAP so she can start in on possible designs for the club to review -- Doug brought up the recent grow-out program held during the June, 2014 Club Meeting. He solicited comment and input from the participants. Some members commented that they thought the quality of the sanke available might have been better, but the members decided to let them grow out over the Summer and bring them to the Show before we came to any consensus on the overall quality of the fish in general. -- Doug to contact Gary Elmore of the Atlanta Club to see if they are still interested in purchasing any of our 6 ft. soft-sided show tanks. 5
Cont d From the Secretary Doug Stuber -- Willie volunteered to go have a look at our supply trailer soon and do any necessary work to get it and the contents ready for the Show in October. Doug volunteered to be there as well. -- Libby reminded everyone the Show will be here on us before we know it, and we will need everyone s help to pull it off again this year. -- Adjourned to enjoy the fine food and Bill s beautiful water garden. Roving Reporter Doug Stuber POND STARS - Reality TV Meets Pond Construction Just when you thought you ve heard of everything. Seems we have a new television series coming up on the Nat Geo channel later this fall, something called Pond Stars. It appears a team of pond-builders will work to create attractive ponds and backyard water features across the country. They even mention a site somewhere in North Florida (?) on their schedule. The folks of Aquascape will have a team of four professionals on the show, and I have attached a link to their website. Knowing how Aquascape likes to design things, water lilies, gravel/rock bottoms, relatively shallow ponds, etc., I m not sure how educational this program will be for the serious Koi-Kichi, but it may be worth a watch, most notably for water gardeners. But I will most definitely have my remote in-hand that night. Pass the popcorn and the fish pellets -- on with the show! What: Pond Stars Where: National Geographic Channel - Nat Geo When: Friday, September 5 at 10:00 PM EDT For more info: www.natgeowild.com and: http://www.aquascapeinc.com/blogs/aquascape-news/nat-geo-wilds-new-series-pondstars 7
Roving Reporter Alina Howard Glass-wing butterflies live in South America. A butterfly with transparent wings is rare and beautiful. As delicate as finely blown glass, the presence of this rare tropical gem is used by jungle observers as an indication of high habitat quality. Rivaling the refined beauty of a stained glass window, the translucent wings of the Glass wing butterfly shimmer in the sunlight like polished panes of turquoise, orange, green, and red. All things beautiful do not have to be full of color to be noticed. In life, that which is unnoticed has the most power. 8
Really something isn't it? 9
