IPSWICH/MUSSBACH YOUTH TRIP 2008 DAHN

Sunday 27th July 2008 Left Ipswich around 7-45 am arriving at Stansted at 9am. Checked in OK to plane and departed on time but with very bumpy landing in Hahn. We were collected by Petra and Arnd some going with Petra and the rest in minibus with Arnd. Good journey to Mussbach and on arrival we had a short meeting with instructions for the next day and then we went to our hosts. Most of our party went to a get together at Lukas's house which went very well. We discovered the Lauren Reed does not cycle so it was arranged that she would go in the Mini Bus to Dahn with Herr Pech. Monday 28th July Hot and sunny. Met at Mussbach Station at 10-15 - as space was tight some people cycled to Neustadt Station to meet our train. We changed at Neustadt Meeting the others and took the train to Landau. We then changed to a train train that took us around 5 km to Dahn. We cycled from Station to Dahn. Unfortunately Danielle Ham fell off her bike on the last hill and injured her knee and thumb. Laura administered First Aid. We then had lunch of Spaghetti, Salad and ice cream. After lunch we went to a nearby swimming pool returning for our evening meal at 18-00 hrs. Evening meals on bread, meats and cheeses. Devotions of subject of Friendship by Danielle, Lauren & Ellie.

Songs sung "what a friend we have in Jesus" and first run through of song for the opening of the Church Festival on Friday night - it is the African son Se a Humber which is very easy to learn. Finished with notices. Free time in evening everyone in rooms and quiet by 12-00am. Tuesday 29 July Slightly cooler after early morning rain. Breakfast at 8am everyone ok - Packed lunches were made up. Lauren and Danielle went by car to Wieseenboug - we all went by bike. We left at around 9-45 and after 2 breaks for drinks we made it to Wisenboug 25km away at around 12-00noon. We had our packed lunches in the church garden and had a little time in the town.

We then went on the Johanneskirche. The Rev. Marc Seibert talked to us about the history of the town and the ways that it had belonged to both France and Germany over the years and ways they have tried to unite the Alsace and the Palatinate.

We left a around 2-30 making 4 stops on the way back as it was much warmer in the afternoon We arrived back at around 5pm after a 50km (approx. 30 mile ) round trip very tired!. Tea was Meatloaf, Potatoes and Veg followed by Tinned Peaches. Devotions were by Karl and Clare - "Why aren't all Christians Friends" They showed by playing Chinese Whispers how things can be misunderstood. We sung Sei Beuhert in both German & English. We finished with another rehearsal of song for Friday. Arnd gave out notices for the next day - there was general socialising after this but most people were very tired and went to bed earlier than usual! Wednesday 30th July Breakfast at 8am - everyone was on time - Bus leaving for Strasbourg at 9am. After a comfort break we arrived in Strasbourg around 11-00. We were met by a tour guide who gave us a short tour of the most interesting parts of the City. This included the old part of the city which includes the enormous Notre Dam Cathedral. Also we saw the European Parliament Building and the European Court of Human Rights.

We then had free time to explore the city and many of our party took the opportunity to go shopping. We left Strasbourg and went to a "Barefoot Walk" where we experienced walking over different types of textures and through mud! We arrived back at the Youth Hostel around 5pm. Evening meal was at 6pm which was Rice & Goulash and salad followed by Mousse. During meal a very large thunderstorm started so it was decided to have devotions indoors. Karl, Dave & Graham did this and they played a game called "Splat" to represent how people can soon become enemies. We sung make " Make me a Channel of your Peace" followed by another rehearsal of our African song for Friday night which went much better.

The thunderstorm carried on for most of the evening so most of the young people stayed indoors or sat in the shelter. Everyone in bed by 12-00 with no problems in the night. Thursday 31st July 2008 Awoke to find heavy fog over the valley with visibility down to under 100 m. During breakfast fog lifted and by 9-00am it had cleared completely. We were joined by a Forest Ranger who would guide us through the Forest to Fischbach. It was explained to us on the route which trees made up the forest - Beech and the different types of Pine. Also the varieties of Animals such as Wild Boar, Wild Cat and Lynx. The walk uphill was very hard as the forest was very humid after the previous evening's storms. We arrived at Fishbach around 1-00pm at the Biospherehouse which was a Forest Centre. After our packed lunch we were shown a presentation on the forest, its habitat and the cliffs and rocks followed by information on the Biosphere House. The main attraction of this place was the walkway through the trees which allowed you to walk at quiet a height above tree level. You could do this the easy way or the hard way - the hard way being over obstacles and rope bridges and similar. There was also a very high observation tower which gave spectacular views over the surrounding countryside. There were lots of different hands on exhibits including how to hear like an owl 1 The last thing was a slide which took you from the tree top walk down to ground level in around 10 seconds which most people tried.

We then had a bus back to the Youth Hostel for 4pm. Devotions was at 5pm on the theme of the Environment which was led by Mel & Nadine. They played charades with each answer being relating to the environment. We then practiced the last sing through for the song for Friday night. We then had our evening meal which was fried chicken, chips and salad followed by Yogurt. Arnd then reminded us of the time we were meeting for bowling. We went to a small bowling arcade in the village which was good fun - everyone returned back and were in bed by midnight. Friday 1st Aug Weather slightly more cloudy today. After breakfast we had to clear and clean our rooms which was done very well. All our suitcases were put away in a storage room and we went swimming. As the weather was cooler most of us stayed inside as there was a plume and also spa pools. However braver ones went diving in the outside pool! We had lunch of burger and chips with some having pizza. After this we returned back to the Youth Hostel and Herr Pech arrived at 1pm ( exactly! ) to pick up our cases. Also as space was limited on the trains for cases on the train Danielle, Lauren, Mel, Ellie, Nadine & Justine went in the bus with the bikes along with the luggage which was put in a trailer.

The rest of biked to the station. On the way it started to rain lightly. By the time we got to the station the rain was more heavy. On th station we found a few more friends! The train came at 2-35 and we after 2 changes we arrived back in Neustadt at 3.50. Several people opted to cycle from Neustadt to Mussbach to return to their families, picking cases up from Herr Schnoor's house. Back in Mussbach it was time for the opening of the Church Festival

We all met at the Festival at around 6-45 to practice our song. Jurgen arrived with his guitar and said we should sing in a higher key which worked better. The festival opening ceremony started at 7pm and after introductions and speeches from The Mayor, Arnd and the Catholic Priest it was our turn to sing. We understand from those in the crowd that it was very good so the practice was worthwhile. After more speeches the festival began. Most of our young people went off in small groups and very much enjoyed the evening. Saturday 2nd August. This was a free day with many going shopping in Neustadt or going to the swimming pool.

Sunday 3rd August We had a Open Air Service at the Sports Club involving local people brass bands and a Gospel Choir It was then time for a quick lunch before getting together at Arnd's before saying our goodbyes and off to the Airport - until next year!

Ellie Hick's First Visit On Sunday 27th July at 7.30 the youth group all met at the church ready to travel to Mussbach. We were all half asleep as we said our goodbyes to our family s and started our youth group trip. After a short flight and car journey we arrived in Mussbach in the boiling heat. On the Monday we were off to the youth hostel in Dahn. After a hot train journey and much complaining we arrived there in style on our bikes all sweaty and hot! We got an early night and on Tuesday morning we braced ourselves for our 50k cycle ride in the heat! We all got through it and no one fainted in the end though. Once back at the youth hostel there was a race to the showers, because there was only about 3 between all of us! On Wednesday we had a more relaxing day, with no cycling to everyone s relief. We went to Strasbourg in France where we all spent lots of money and found a McDonalds! The next day we had a forest walk to Ficshbach. We went to the Biosphere house where we learned about the forest. We also did a tree top walk there which was great fun. On Friday it was time to go back to Mussbach by train and bike, even though a few others and I got the mini bus. Over the weekend we stayed at our host s houses and went to the wine festival Friday and Saturday night. Overall the week was a brilliant success and no one can wait until next year! Ellie Hicks
