Green Bay Metro Fire Department-Allouez Station June and July is usually hot and humid for us in this area and I'm sure this year will be no different. Staying properly hydrated will make a big difference in how well your body will cope with the heat. The average adult loses more than 10 cups of fluid through sweating, breathing, and eliminating waste every day. If you are exercising or are out in high heat, the amount lost will be higher So the big question is how much do you need to drink per day? The answer to this depends on many factors such as age, sex, weight, climate, and activities that you will perform. Guidelines are constantly changing. In 2004, the Institute of Medicine effectively overruled the 8 glass a day rule - with a new report. They stated a general daily recommendation of 2.7 liters (91 ounces) of total water for women and 3.7 liters (125 ounces) for men. This includes water from all sources (foods and drinks). Listen to your body and recognize the signs that you may need more fluids. Here are some signs of dehydration; * Thirst * Dark Urine * Dizziness or lightheadedness * Muscle cramps * Headache * Feeling weak or tired Here's the bottom line. Most of us don't drink enough fluids and it's hard to put an exact number on how much you need. To stay hydrated you need to stay ahead of the fluid loss and plan for it. It is better to have an excess amount to lose than trying to play catch-up. The best advice is to take in fluids consistently throughout the day even when you're not thirsty.
