WHEN Arrival: Saturday, April 28, 2018 - Departure: Saturday, May 5, 2018. This is a wonderful time of year to visit Vienna, before the heat of summer and the rush of tourists arrive. And, airfares are significantly lower in April/May than in the middle of summer! WHERE Das Millicanhaus, Grünentorgasse 30, 1090 Vienna, Austria. The recently remodeled Das Millicanhaus (owned by OC, referred to as 'the Haus') offers inviting one and two-room apartment options as well as spacious community areas in an excellent location in central Vienna, convenient to shops and public transportation. The Haus is only one block from the Danube Canal in a quaint, quiet neighborhood with restaurants, shops and grocery stores. It's less than one block from the Rossauer Lände U-Bahn (subway) station, and also the "D" Tram streetcar stop, which connects you to the entire city. The Ringstrasse (the Imperial Boulevard circling the inner city) is a seven-minute walk from the front door of the Haus, and St. Stephens Cathedral, the very heart of Vienna, is only 3 U-Bahn stops away.
THE PLAN We realize there will be expert Vienna travelers, novices, and 'explorers' on the trip, and that your plans may include your own activities for the week. Wonderful! The Vienna Alumni Adventure combines the convenience of scheduled, pre-paid morning and afternoon activities led by Dr. Ken Adams, OC Emeritus Professor of Music, with the flexibility of unstructured afternoons and evenings. In addition, each afternoon Ken will lead an optional outing open to all participants to a chosen Viennese site. Or, you may want to use afternoons to explore on your own. OC IS HOME, BUT IS THIS TRIP FOR YOU? The Vienna Alumni Adventure will take us into Viennese culture outside the tourist bubble. It will be a great STUDENT-TYPE EXPERIENCE FOR ALUMNI, emphasizing discovery and adventure rather than creature comforts. THIS MEANS: no daily housekeeping service, no TVs in guest rooms, and no air conditioning in most rooms. May in Vienna typically ranges from highs in the mid-60s to lows in the lower 50s. Most travel will be on the U-Bahn, Vienna's magnificent subway system, with a good deal of walking and climbing steps on all outings. However, participants using a wheelchair have participated fully! BUT, it also means this will be a great trip of DISCOVERY from a wonderful location with morning presentations, outings and special events led by a professor well-versed in Viennese culture and experience. And your afternoons and evenings will be open. You can plan your own activities, rest at the Haus, or participate in optional group outings. All of this gives you the most for your travel dollar! We are excited that sharing common housing will afford us opportunities for worship, visiting and sharing our OC and Vienna experiences. AMENITIES AT THE HAUS The Haus offers access to free Wi-Fi in common areas, washers and dryers, 4 imac stations, printer/scanner, a community living/conference area with full size kitchen and dining facilities. Large, flat screen televisions with Apple TV and associated high-definition options are available on the ground floor as well as board games and DVDs. The lodgings at Das Millicanhaus accommodate individuals, couples, families and reunion groups. This beautifully renovated structure has received rave reviews from recent OC alums who have stayed there and experienced its many benefits. While all rooms contain only bunk-style beds, they are thicker and MUCH more comfortable than basic dorm bunks.
PRE-PAID GROUP ESCORTED ACTIVITIES Daily outings are included in the VIENNA ALUMNI ADVENTURE PACKAGE, and will include some of the most popular Vienna attractions such as the Ringstrasse, Schönbrunn palace and gardens, St. Stephens Cathedral, and the Klimt collection at the Belvedere Palace. NOTE: The pre-paid State Opera House tour is offered only in the afternoon. Of course, circumstances beyond our control may necessitate substitution of activities of equal or greater value. Whether you're a first time visitor or a returning traveler, you'll find these experiences unforgettable! Additionally, the VIENNA ALUMNI ADVENTURE PACKAGE includes daily breakfast, a welcome reception and dinner, a special Austrian dinner in Salzburg and a memorable farewell dinner. REGISTRATION/DEPOSIT/PAYMENT INFORMATION: Because space is limited to only 15 rooms, our deposit and refund policy is necessarily strict. We allow three days from time of reservation to make sure the airfare you desire is available. (Most airlines permit cancellation within 24 hours of booking a flight, even if it is a nonrefundable fare.) Check your airline policies and schedules before you book! A $500 deposit for one or two people plus $250 for each additional person is required at the time of your reservation and booking. You can make your final payment at any time prior to the deadline of February 1, 2018. The schedule of payments and refunds is as follows: Deposit refund: The deposit is refunded if booking is cancelled within 72 hours. After 72 hours of booking the deposit is forfeited. Balance due: February 1, 2018. Balance of all fees is due on or before February 1, 2018. If payments are not received by that date, your reservation will be cancelled. If final payment(s) have been made, and the booking is cancelled before February 1, 2018, the final payment(s) will be refunded. Cancellations after February 1, 2018 are non-refundable. ESTIMATING YOUR COSTS NOT included in the Package: At the date of this writing, the exchange rate is approximately $1.00 = 0.86 ( is the symbol for Euro) and 1.00=$1.16. The price of a Viennese deli or bakery sandwich, or a combo meal in fast food restaurant (Big Mac Meal or similar) in Vienna is about $7 ( 6). A basic sit-down lunch meal (Mittagsmenü) without drink (the European practice) starts at about $9 ( 8). A good sitdown dinner without drink begins at about $20 ( 17). Of course, currency rates fluctuate daily, and by May the exchange rate may be different. Current rates can be checked here. The in-room and common kitchen facilities at the Haus allow for preparing your own meals and packing lunch, if desired. After making your reservation, we will send you a detailed itinerary and additional information periodically to help you plan for the trip. UNDERSOLD HAUS: If an insufficient number of rooms are sold to cover OC's costs, the trip, as described in this document, will not occur. HOWEVER, we would still offer to those registered the two following options: (1) Full refund of all payments (2) Keeping your room at the Haus for the same days and pay a reduced rate (no pre-paid excursions or meals) with the balance refunded.
