HISTORICAL NOTE - ''Flora MacDonald achieved fame for her part in helping Bonnie Prince Charlie s escape to the Isle of Skye following the tragedy at Culloden. The cottage next to the Flodigarry Country House Hotel was home for Flora and her family for 8 years from 1751-1759 where 5 of her 7 children were born''. The approach to Flodigarry must be one of the most spectacular drives anywhere. The road from Portree passes through some wonderful countryside with rugged mountain scenery, including the famed old Man of Storr, set against fine views across the Sound of Raasay. The hotel itself occupies an unrivalled elevated position overlooking across the sea to the Torridon Mountains on the mainland. The Isle of Skye is considered by many to be one of the most spectacular Scottish islands some 50 miles in length it is the largest of the Inner Hebridean group. The island is deeply indented with sea lochs and rocky headlands forming a series of peninsulas. Skye is a beautiful and romantic treasure to the north west of Scotland and now that it is linked by the bridge to the mainland it is even more accessible and draws many tens of thousands of visitors every year. Flodigarry is a good class country house hotel which has been tastefully upgraded and improved to a high standard. Great care has been taken to blend traditional Highland lodge character with modern comfort and convenience including the conversion of Flora MacDonald s Cottage to provide additional bedrooms and the overall result is a highly successful hotel business. With its tourist destination location, the hotel attracts the bulk of its business from the leisure market (UK and overseas) but also draws commercial custom including visiting film and television crews using the Isle of Skye as their backdrop. Since purchasing the property in 2008 the vendor has continued the improvements at Flodigarry. Now trading seasonally, to maximise profitability, the hotel is offered for sale so the owner can retire to the South Coast of England.
