F CRUISING ABOARD THE M.S. REMBRANDT OCTOBER 18 TO 27, 2011 FEATURING PAMELA WEBB, MA'83, PHD '89 11

Dear Bryn Mawr Alumnae/i and Friends, Springing from a glacier, the Rhône River flows through the French Alps stunning snow-white peaks and blossoming Alpine meadows, nourishes the Rhône Valley s fabled vineyards, and runs by Roman ruins, medieval castles, picturesque villages and thriving cities, joining the Saône River at Lyon. Be among the first to travel on this uniquely designed program and discover the tremendous beauty and the fascinating historic and artistic significance of the Rhône River Valley and the French Alps. Join us on this comprehensive 10-day itinerary and experience the joie de vivre of provincial France from the timeless allure of the ancient regions of Provence, Beaujolais and Burgundy through the tranquil beauty of the French Alps. From Arles, cruise for five nights aboard the exclusively chartered M.S. REMBRANDT, an intimate and comfortable vessel ideally designed to navigate the waterways of the French countryside. Drive along Burgundy s scenic wine route and enjoy a private wine tasting in a medieval castle amid the picturesque Beaujolais villages; explore the ancient Roman monuments of Arles and walk in the footsteps of medieval popes in Avignon. The grandeur of the Alps must be experienced firsthand to be truly appreciated. Here, a rich tapestry of unspoiled storybook villages, fortified medieval castles and rustic chalets, where farmers, herdsmen and artisans proudly carry on the traditions of their forebears, is nestled against a backdrop of soaring peaks, glacier-carved valleys and pristine lakes. Lakeside accommodations await you in the charming medieval town of Annecy, the jewel of the French Alps. Stroll down the lovely arcaded streets of the old town and cruise on the stunning, crystal clear Lake Annecy. View breathtaking Mont Blanc in Chamonix and ascend the slopes to Montenvers by cog railway and l Aiguille du Midi by cable car for magnificent views of the French, Swiss and Italian Alps. We also invite you to enjoy more of Provence and the Alps on the exclusive two-night Aix-en-Provence Pre-Program Option* and the two-night Geneva Post-Program Option*. This new program is an exceptional value including all accommodations and excursions, most meals and the opportunity to explore the beauty, rich artistic legacy and history of the grandest regions in the Alps, Burgundy, Beaujolais and Provence, and is sure to sell out quickly. Make your reservation today, while Early Booking Savings are available. Warm wishes, Wendy M. Greenfield Executive Director Bryn Mawr Alumnae Association Pamela Webb is an alumna of Bryn Mawr College (M.A. 83; Ph.D. 89). She was a Visiting Associate Professor in the Department of Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology (2004-2008), where she taught a wide variety of courses on Roman art and architecture. Dr. Webb will focus on the history and archaeological remains from the reigns of Augustus through Constantine in this important region of the Roman empire, including the ancient cities of Lugdunum (Lyon), Boutae (Annecy), Matisco (Macon), and Arelate (Arles).

U.S. Day 1 Depart from the U.S. MARSEILLES, FRANCE/ARLES Day 2 Arrive in Marseilles. Transfer to charming Arles, the archetypical Provençal city and embark the M.S. REMBRANDT. This evening, join your traveling companions for the Captain s welcome reception and dinner. ARLES/AVIGNON Day 3 Few places on earth can match the distinctive joie de vivre of Arles, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This morning, attend a lecture on the Rhône River given by an Arles resident before the morning walking tour. Visit one of the most majestic Roman monuments in France, the Amphitheater, built in the first century B.C. It is the largest constructed in France and second only to Rome s Colosseum in magnificence and grandeur. Continue to Arles 12th-century Cathedral of St-Trophime which has a fascinating Last Judgement-themed portal, one of the finest examples of Romanesque sculpture. Arles is also associated with Vincent van Gogh, who lived here between 1888 and 1889; the subject of his famous Night Café is still open on the lively Boulevard des Lices. Enjoy time at leisure before reboarding the ship. Throughout the 14th century, Avignon was the center of western Christendom when Pope Clement V arrived here after fleeing the turmoil of Rome in 1309. The next six pontiffs enlarged the city into one of the richest and most powerful in Europe, until the Great Schism with Rome in 1378 led to the eventual end of the Avignon Papacy in 1405. Visit the grandiose Palais des Papes (Papal Palace), one of the largest châteaux-forts built in Europe during the Gothic era, the primary reflection of Avignon s golden age and one of the most famous landmarks in France. Walk to the nearby Garden of the Popes and the Rocher des Domes, which offers panoramic views of the Rhône River Valley. At the river s edge see the remaining four arches of the famous Pont d Avignon one of the most beautiful creations of the Middle Ages. Stroll along the well-preserved, 14th-century ramparts still encircling Avignon, one of the finest surviving examples of medieval fortification. TOURNON (BOUCIEU-LE-ROI) Day 4 Enjoy a morning at leisure on board as the ship cruises along the lovely Rhône River. Dock this afternoon in the lively town of Tournon, a center of the Rhône Valley wine trade with graceful tree-lined promenades and an imposing 11th- to 16th-century château. Drive into the heart of the Rhône Valley to the untouched medieval hamlet of Boucieu-le-Roi, famous for its beautiful 15th-century bridge spanning the Doux River. Here, Father Pierre Vigne, the legendary 18th-century missionary beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2004, founded the Congregation of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament to educate the young and the sick. Visit the Museum of Father Pierre Vigne and enjoy the walking tour of this locally distinguished Village of Character and the warm hospitality of a typical French village during the reception hosted by the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. TOURNON/LYON Day 5 Following a morning cruising past vineyards, olive groves and orchards of the picturesque Rhône-Alps countryside, arrive in Lyon, the gate of Provence, dramatically located at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers. In a nation that holds sacred the enjoyment of food and wine, Photo this page: Visit the Papal Palace in Avignon, reflecting the glory of seven popes who resided there during the 14th century s Great Schism. Cover photo: Stroll through the quaint streets of Annecy, scenically located on the northern shore of Lake Annecy, tucked into the sweeping alpine hills.

Visit the delightful resort town of Chamonix, a historic base for hikers, skiers and mountaineers seeking to conquer the heights of Mont Blanc, Europe s highest peak. Lyon occupies pride of place as France s Capital of Gastronomy. From lofty Fourvière Hill (Praying Hill), see the ornate 19th-century Basilica of Notre Dame and view this vibrant city of red-roofed houses spread out below. Continue to the restored Vieux Lyon (Old Lyon), where almost 300 elegant Gothic and Renaissance mansions attest to the wealth of Lyon s long-standing silk industry. Walk in the ancient quarters of St-Jean, St-Paul and St-Georges which are linked by charming traboules narrow, covered pedestrian passageways. BELLEVILLE (BEAUJOLAIS)/ MÂCON (CLUNY)/ CHÂLON-SUR-SAÔNE Day 6 From the lovely vineyards of the Beaujolais des Pierres Dorées, the land of the golden stones, come France s youngest and fruitiest wines. In some seasons, this internationally recognized wine region along the Saône produces more red wine than the Burgundy regions of Chablis, Côte d Or, Côte Châlonnaise and Mâconnais combined. This morning, travel over verdant rolling hills into the heart of the church-spired Beaujolais region to enjoy a tour of the historic Château Montmelas and savor the château s wines with local cheeses and sausages. Upon docking in Mâcon, drive through the vineyards of the Saône-et-Loire département in Burgundy to the Benedictine Cluny Abbey (A.D. 910), one of the great centers of medieval Christianity. Only remnants of the sprawling abbey complex remain, a casualty of the revolutionary upheavals of 1793. Yet these beautiful and austere remnants still provide a fascinating glimpse of what was, until the construction of St. Peter s in Rome, the largest Christian basilica in the world. Reboard the ship and sail to Châlon-sur-Saône. This evening, enjoy the Captain s farewell reception and dinner. CHÂLON-SUR-SAÔNE/ANNECY Day 7 Disembark the ship and depart by coach for Annecy, one of the most charming towns in the Alps. En route, see meadows ablaze with gentians and bellflowers, steep mountain slopes and undulating valleys carpeted with pastures where traditional farmers herd cows, sheep and goats, just as their forefathers have for generations. Upon arrival, begin the guided tour of delightful Annecy, the Venice of the Alps. Walk along the colorful arcaded streets, beside enchanting canals and over flower-covered bridges through the perfectly preserved old town. See medieval fortified gates, the 12th-century Palais de l Isle (old prison) built in a canal and one of the most photographed monuments in France, the 12th- to 16th-century Château d Annecy and the 16th-century Cathedral of Saint-Pierre. Check into the IMPERIAL PALACE HOTEL, located on picturesque Lake Annecy, surrounded by majestic snowcapped peaks. The afternoon is at leisure. Dinner is included in the hotel tonight. Lyon romances visitors with its covered pedestrian passag Roman architecture and charming Old Town.
