1.1 Program Derivation EA9 SOTA is an extension of similar programmes already active in other countries. The summit database is unlikely to be complete. If you find a summit which you d like to add to SOTA-EA9, or you find a mistake in this ARM please contact the Association Manager. Summits cannot be counted for points until a reference number has been allocated by the Association Manager. 1.2 General information Regions are based in Spanish run Ceuta and Melilla. The code is the 3 digit sequential number CE-001. There is only one qualifying SOTA summit in EA9 called Hacho EA9/CE-001 To qualify for a summit it has to meet the following requirements: The summit must be listed in the list below. The summit must have at least 150 m prominence. In the case of doubt the Management Team will decide whether the Summit will be added to the list The summit database does not claim to be completed and can only be changed by the acceptance of the management team. Summits cannot be counted for points until a launch date and reference number has been allocated by the Association Manager and approved by the SOTA Management Team. 1.3 Rights of way and access issues Tracks in EA9 are often well marked. Access to Ceuta s only summit is by road or walking. Anyhow you should take a good map of the region where you want to hike plus GPS and/or compass if you have one. Never hike without a map, always follow the track. If a summit is in private property or you need to cross private property to access it, you will need the owner's permission before attempting activation. Some areas will require permission before entry is permitted such as within the fort. However, the activation area extends outside the walls of the fort on the south east side and operation may be made from here. 1.4 Maps and navigation The easiest way to get a map is downloaded from the web. The most common mapping for excursions is the National Topographic Map (MTN) published by the National Geographic Institute. Some products such as Raster 1: 25000 (MTN25), 5 Document reference S138.1 v 1.0

you can get free download center National Center for Geographic Information of Spain. http://centrodedescargas.cnig.es/centrodescargas/index.jsp Or view it and print it from: http://www.ign.es/iberpix/visoriberpix/visorign.html Maps provided in this document are courtesy of Google Earth and Google Maps who are acknowledged here. 1.5 Safety considerations It is important to acknowledge the risks involved in summit chasing and mitigate them effectively. Before hiking always consult a weather forecast. Please remember that weather can change rapidly and you should be always prepared for snow, rain, strong wind or intensive sun, Use reliable weather information before planning your assent. In case of emergency you should call 112. or by direct radio call. It is advisable to have a ground watch operating that is able to call for assistance if it is required. Always make sure that someone else knows where you are going and when you expect to return. 1.6 Foreign HAMs in EA9 Holders of CEPT Licenses are authorised to transmit according to their licenses and IARU Bandplan for region 1. You should have a copy of your license with you. You should prefix your callsign with EA9/. Then you should also add /P. Second stroking isn't mandatory but helps to identify you as a SOTA portable station. If you would like to opérate from Spain for more than three months you should contact the Provincial Telecommunications of the respective province in order to obtain a Spanish license. 1.7 Association Awards There are no Association-specific awards at the moment for EA9 association. 6 Document reference S138.1 v 1.0

1.8 Disclaimer Hiking, hill-walking and rock-climbing are potentially dangerous activities. The SOTA Management Team and their associates assume no responsibility for accidents. Participants must be competent to undertake their proposed Activation and must carry suitable equipment, taking account of the terrain, weather conditions, etc. Activators take part in the Programme entirely at their own risk and the SOTA Award Programme in its entirety shall accept no responsibility for injury, loss of life or any other loss. Activators are reminded that hill climbing is an inherently hazardous activity. Accidents can and do happen in the mountains and the risk is neither increased nor mitigated by the SOTA programme. The SOTA organisation takes no responsibility for Each participant does so at his or her own risk, and must decide, on the basis of their own ability, whether an objective is achievable or not. The listing of a summit in the SOTA database or elsewhere does not mean that it is easy to reach, and it is always worth seeking local advice. The association manager may be able to advise on this. 7 Document reference S138.1 v 1.0
