T the hang of it not hard. It was certainly the easiest way to get to Como, about an hour north of Milan. We spent a weekend in this beautiful area, where the rich Milanese have holidayed for centuries, boating, swimming and drinking coffee in the sun. We stayed at the Hotel Metropole Suisse. With his four-year-old son by his side, one of the owners, Damiano Cassani, explained the hotel had been in the family for 120 years, since it was bought by his great-grandmother, who was from Luciano in Switzerland. The building, with a facade later designed by rationalist architect Giuseppe Terragni, was then only three floors but she added two more. It was important for a hotel to have a high level restaurant. It was a really nice and different period, like a Belle Epoque. Now the restaurant is less important, there s hundreds could have popular actors here. Now it s very difficult, with all the media around. But during World War II there were unwelcome guests and the hotel was appropriated as the German army headquarters in Como. Because Como was so close to neutral Switzerland, many Jews passed through here, trying to get across the border and on to Palestine or the United States. The Cassanis sheltered some in the basement. Here was the headquarters and nobody was looking for Jewish people here. My grandfather and his sister saved many people. They had them in the house and were helping them to cross the border, Mr Cassani says. Como s historical role in the end of fascism came when dictator Benito Mussolini was captured by the partisans in Dongo, on the shores of Lake Como and executed in Giulino di Mezzegra. We spent a weekend in this area, where the rich Milanese have holidayed for centuries. in Como, Mr Cassani told us. His great-grandmother, who he described as very, very strong, had three sons, who all went into the business. Now it is run mainly by Mr Cassani and his cousin. Many famous people have stayed here, from Russian czars to the royal family of Denmark and Italian TV and movie stars. Once it was different, we Damiano Cassani. But that train had been delayed and by mistake we got on the slow, regional one which took us to Porta Garibaldi station, also in Milan. The nice young man tried to work out a solution to our problem. Hop out at the next station and take the train back to Como, he said and then get another fast one as we d already paid for this more expensive one. (He was worried we wouldn t get our money s worth.) Or get off at Porta Garibaldi and take a tram or metro to Stazione Centrale. The second option was better, we thought, and in the end it didn t take all that much longer maybe 30 minutes. And it made us realise that regional or local trains are just as good to catch for short distances as the 27 Day Namibia, Botswana & Zambia $9495 PHONE FOR A BROCHURE TODAY! 23 Day Malawi & Zambia $89900 Then we had the Polish command and then the US command here and then we started again with the hotel, Mr Cassani said. My father told me stories. My father likes history and family history. He always tells me he has a diary and is writing a book. Opposite the hotel, work is being done on the boardwalk and piers as a new lake front is being built to cope with flooding. The square is going down and the old buildings are sinking. His hotel has renovated and classic rooms. We stayed in a big classic one, with a balcony overlooking the lake. There are many guests who have been coming for generations and always want the same room.
