The Marina Bay Sands SkyPark is a triumph of modern engineering, featured by the likes of National Geographic and the Discovery Channel s Build it Bigger for its bold look and daring design elements. Marina Bay Sands
The SkyPark spans the top level of all three Marina Bay Sands hotel towers 626 feet (191 meters) above the ground. Marina Bay Sands
The SkyPark has a 213-foot (65- meter) cantilever edge Marina Bay Sands
In 2006, the Las Vegas Sands Corporation and visionary architect Moshe Safdie were awarded the bid to build Singapore s first integrated resort. Natare Corporation was hired to design, build and install the SkyPark pools. Marina Bay Sands

The entire system was individually engineered and structurally designed using the most comprehensive computer design and modeling tools. Three-dimensional models were created long before manufacturing or construction began.
A scale model of the pool enclosures and submersed connectors was built and tested at Natare s headquarters in Indianapolis.
This mock-up allowed Natare to troubleshoot and modify the sealing method in order to provide a superior product never before used in elevated pools..
Because the pool was built atop three high rise towers, Natare engineers had to consider the fact that wind, and the force of gravity would cause the towers to sway and move independently of one another.
The three pool shells are joined by connectors at each of the movement joints that double as shallow-water terraces for pool loungers.
They accomplished this feat by constructing four movement joints beneath the main pool; each with a unique range of motion.
Movable Terraces
In addition to wind, the towers are also subject to settlement over time, which could cause any of the three pool shells to slope.
Natare engineers designed and built custom jack legs at more than 500 points beneath the pool to allow for future adjustment.
Floor and wall system on adjustable jack legs
The jacking system ensures the infinity edge will remain within its original placement and continue to function properly.

Natare developed a plan to pre-fabricate all components from their manufacturing facility in Indianapolis and ship them to the site in more than 40 ocean freight containers.
In all, 40,000 pieces were used to construct the pool enclosures; these pieces were condensed to less than 2000, modular units to be assembled on site.
Another obstacle Natare faced involved space limitations.
Ideally raw materials would be shipped and fabricated on-site, but in this case, crew members shared a very restricted workspace with many other contractors on a construction site in the sky

Many of the pool s sub-assemblies were hoisted to the top of the towers via crane.

Technical Details The pools are composed of 422,000 pounds of stainless steel and finished with 254,000 ceramic tiles adhered directly to the stainless steel shell. The pools hold 376,500 gallons (1424 cubic meters) of water. The weight of the pool when filled with water is 3.6 Million pounds (1843 tons; 1672 metric tons). The entire SkyPark is 340 meters (1115 feet) long and 40 meters (131 feet) wide. The pool s mechanical system, also designed, built and installed by Natare, filters the pool water at a rate of 5707 gallons per minute. The pool components traveled from Indianapolis to Singapore, a total distance of 9,523 miles (15,325 km), as the crow flies. Marina Bay Sands
