MILITARY SURGICAL SOCIETY Malta Meeting September 2008 Hosted by the Association of Surgeons of Malta and the University of Malta Medical School PROGRAMME University of Malta Medical School at Mater Dei Hospital Courtesy of the Dean, Prof Godfrey LaFerla Conference Hotel: Hotel Fortina Conference Carrier: Air Malta Sponsor: Associated Equipment
malta welcome I would like to welcome our guests, the President, the Secretary and members of the Military Surgical Society, and also our guests from the UK and Pisa. I hope that you will enjoy the meeting and your stay in our beautiful island. Our islands have been inhabited for several thousand years and are the site of the oldest free standing stone monuments in the world. Due to its location in the centre of the Mediterranean Malta has a very rich history, including a long tradition of excellence in Medicine and Surgery. Our strategic position was highly coveted and we have suffered numerous skirmishes, wars and also two great sieges. Our numerous fortifications are a testament to this. This sets the scene for what promises to be a very interesting meeting. I would like to thank Prof R Myles Gibson and Lieutenant Colonel David Vassallo for their help and support in planning this meeting, Professor Godfrey LaFerla for his support and for allowing the use of the Medical School, Professor Charles Savona Ventura, Mr Charles Borg Galea and Mr Aaron Casha for curating the exhibition and publishing the pamphlet, Ms Caryl Cassar, Ms Sarah Busuttil, ASM council members and others for their help, and finally Associated Equipment for their sponsorship.
