YOUR WISCONSIN PUBLIC RADIO ADVENTURE BEGINS. DAY 1: June 16 - Depart the USA for Stockholm, Sweden DAY 2: June 17 - Välkommen till Sverige! Welcome to Sweden! Your Scandinavia journey begins at 6:00pm at a Stockholm hotel. For those on the group flight, an airport transfer is included from Stockholm Arlanda Airport to the hotel, located in the heart of the historic city. Meet your travel companions for an introductory walk of the city center this afternoon followed by a welcome reception and included dinner. Sleep in Stockholm (D) DAY 3: June 18 - Discover Stockholm Begin your discovery of Sweden's capital with a guided visit to the impressive City Hall, where the annual Nobel Prize festivities take place. We'll then tour the Vasa Museum, featuring the impressive Vasa, an ornate royal warship that sank in Stockholm's harbor following its launch in 1628. With your free afternoon, you may want to take a canal tour or stroll the cobbled streets of medieval Gamla Stan (Old Town). Sleep in Stockholm (B, L) DAY 4: June 19 - A Ferry Ride to Fjäderholmarna Island For a taste of the Stockholm archipelago we ll take a short boat trip out to beautiful Fjäderholmarna Island. It's just a 25 minute boat ride and there is a lot to see and do here a great way to enjoy a Swedish summer day! Fjäderholmarna is the perfect destination for both locals and tourists who flock to experience the beautiful islands, stunning natural landscape, beaches, outdoor cafes and restaurants for the real Stockholm archipelago atmosphere. DAY 5: June 20 - From Sweden to Denmark After breakfast this morning we depart Stockholm by train for Copenhagen. You ll arrive just in time to stroll through the old harbor. Stretch your legs and enjoy a short stroll along the waterfront to view the Little Mermaid sculpture and the Amalienborg Palace before dinner. This evening enjoy a Welcome to Denmark drink and dinner featuring Danish specialties! Sleep in Copenhagen (B, D) DAY 6: June 21 - Wonderful, Wonderful Copenhagen This morning you are invited to join a knowledgeable local guide for a fascinating walk through the old alleyways of Copenhagen. We ll visit the city s charming harbor of Nyhavn and stroll down the Strøget, Copenhagen s main pedestrian avenue. Our walking tour of the old town center will end right before lunch and your local and Earthbound guides will be available to offer you restaurant suggestions as well as ideas for how to spend your free afternoon. Art lovers might consider visiting the National Gallery, while history buffs might choose to visit the impressive National Museum. Spend an afternoon in the Tivoli Gardens or explore the Renaissance Rosenborg Palace, home to the Danish crown jewels. The possibilities are endless! Sleep in Copenhagen (B) DAY 7: June 22 - North Sealand and Ferry North to Norway Today we journey to North Sealand, filled with quaint villages, historic palaces, lovely lakes, and dense forests. We ll visit 17th-century Frederiksborg Castle, built by Christian IV in Danish Renaissance style. We ll savor regional fare at local restaurant and drive the Yellow Roads along the "Danish Riviera" back to Copenhagen. This afternoon we board the overnight ferry to Norway. DAY 8: June 23 - Oslo, Sculptures and Viking Ships Enjoy awe-inspiring scenery as you cruise up Oslo Fjord this morning upon arrival into Norway's capital city. We ll have a private tour of Oslo s highlights, including the Viking Ship Museum, which features three well-preserved Viking ships dating to 800 AD, found in royal burial mounds with fascinating artifacts. We'll also have time to see the Vigeland Sculpture Park, with its 212 life-sized sculptures by Norwegian sculptor Gustav Vigeland, who devoted his career to the project. Sleep in Oslo (B, L) DAY 9: June 24 - The Oslo Opera House You'll have free time this morning to enjoy the many sights of Oslo. We suggest a visit to the Fram Polar Ship Museum, Vigeland Museum or the Munch Museum. This afternoon meet your fellow travelers for an exclusive tour of the new Oslo Opera house, followed by a classical music performance. Sleep in Oslo (B, L) DAY 10: June 25 - A Scenic Train to Bergen and the Grieg Music Festival Today we travel west past the gorgeous fjords and mountains aboard the Oslo to Bergen scenic train. Bergen is located on the Byfjord and is famous for its ancient harbor and open-air fish market. Our hotel is located right on the harbor in the city's old wharf district, featuring traditional wooden buildings and a medieval atmosphere. Founded in 1070 during the days of the Hanseatic League, Bergen is one of the oldest large trading ports in Northern Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. DAY 11: June 26 - Troldhaugen, Edvard Grieg's musical inspiration After learning about Bergen's centuries-old maritime legacy during our guided city tour, we embark on an excursion to Troldhaugen, former home of Edvard Grieg, Norway's foremost composer, best known for his musical score for the play Peer Gynt. We return to Bergen to spend the afternoon at leisure followed by an evening dinner together. Sleep in Bergen (B, D) DAY 12: June 27 - The Fjords of Norway Today we set off on a fjord cruise to Mostraumen. On this half day excursion, we will see western Norwegian scenery at its best, with narrow fjords and majestic mountains. Since we ll be departing early tomorrow morning, join your host and fellow travelers for a farewell luncheon featuring regional specialties. Sleep in Bergen (B, L) DAY 13: June 28 - Return Home with a Lifetime of Memories! Your Scandinavia tour ends in Bergen, Norway. Packing: We ll be hopping scenic trains and catching the overnight ferry from Copenhagen to Oslo. This means that at times you will be moving and carrying your bag both on to trains and the ferry. We suggest that you pack light and utilize wheeled luggage. Porters are available at the hotels, but not on the ferries or on the trains. Physical requirements: In order to make the most of your trip, you should be able to walk independently for one to two miles, often over uneven cobblestones and be able to stand for a period of time during walking or museum tours or visits to other sights. You must also be able to maneuver luggage onto trains and ships (see above). Travel Insurance: Earthbound Expeditions strongly encourages the purchase of travel insurance coverage. MEET YOUR HOST Mike Crane - Director, Wisconsin Public Radio Mike Crane is the Director of Wisconsin Public Radio (WPR). He joined WPR as Chief Operating Officer in 2008 and was promoted to Director in 2010. WPR started with experimental license 9XM in 1914 and has evolved to include two networks on 34 stations with more than 110 staff in seven offices around the state today. WPR has more than 50,000 members including nearly 15,000 sustainers. Under Crane's leadership, the station launched a Journalism Innovation Fund in 2013, supported the development of young broadcast journalists with the Lee Ester Fellowship and established partnerships with leading investigative journalism organizations. New programs, like Central Time, and the nationally recognized sense-of-place series Wisconsin Life, which is now a television series in partnership with Wisconsin Public Television, were created under his watch.
