Crime hits Hoedspruit region Attempted murder AN attempted murder and hi-jacking happened last Friday night near Mabins Cross. According to Constable Livuwani Mualudzi, the driver stopped at Mabins Cross and left his passenger alone in the vehicle. The passenger was approached by three armed attackers who demanded the keys from the victim. They then proceeded to shoot the passenger in the shoulder and then drove off with the bakkie, said Mualudzi. She said the passenger was rushed to Sekororo Hospital. The vehicle was later found abandoned by police in the Masoyi area, added Mualudzi. Mauludzi said so far no arrests had been made and police were investigating further. Body discovered AN unidentified female body was discovered in the bush near Santeng on Monday. According to police spokesperson Constable Livhuwani Mulaudzi, police had opened an inquest in regards to the woman, aged between 70 to 80 years old. She said the body was totally decomposed when it was discovered by the local community who then contacted the police. No one has been reported missing so we are asking the community members to visit the police station and see Detective Mukumo who can take the family for DNA tests. Also, if they are able to identify clothing and the shoes, it will help in the identification of the deceased, concluded Mulaudzi. Woman assaulted A woman was kicked and robbed while walking in a street in Hoedspruit. According to Constable Livuwani Mualudzi, the incident occurred on Monday night at approximately 19:30. The woman was walking on the Origstadt Road when the suspect approached her. He kicked her and grabbed her handbag which had documents and an undisclosed amount of money in it,said Mualudzi. She said the suspect then ran and police who were nearby gave chase. The suspect ran into the bush and the police were hot on his heels. He then stopped and turned on the police and wielded a knife, added Mualudzi. According to her, the man wielded his knife and attempted to stab the policemen. The police shot two warning rounds into the ground attempting to scare the suspect into dropping the weapon, but he continued to attempt to attack the police. They then had no option but to shoot the suspect in the leg, said Mualudzi. She said the suspect was then arrested and will appear in the Hoedspruit Magistrate court shortly.

2 NEWS HOEDSPRUIT HERALD Friday January 15, 2016 Police warning: Do not hike MAAKE Police have sent out warnings about the dangers of hitchhiking and offering of lifts to people you do not know. Community members are are warned about criminals who prey on hitchhikers and drivers. Maake police spokesperson, Constable Rufus Magoro said, these criminals pose as hitchhikers, once you offer them a lift they rob you of your motor vehicle, assault and dump you on the street. "They also target those who are hitchhiking, they offer them a lift, and once you are in their motor vehicle they assault and rob you of your belongings. We therefore condemn hitchhiking and offering of a lift to any unknown person. We also advice hitchhikers to note/ write down the registration number, colour and model of the motor vehicle that is offering them a lift and send it to a family member or friend for later identification and tracking of the motor vehicle if something happens. The most dangerous places to ask for a lift in Maake area are: Maake plaza hiking spot (R36 road), Maake plaza bus stop, trichardsdaalroad, Burgersdorp,Ofcolaco, Ga-Masokisi and Taposa hiking spot(metz). People should be aware that all hiking spots are dangerous and have a potential of robberies," said Magoro. Elderly victims of ATM fraud ACORNHOEK police are investigating two cases of fraud that happened at ATM machines in Acornhoek old complex and Mega City last weekend. According to Acornhoek police spokesperson, Lieutenant Mpho Nonyane, the first incident happened last Saturday evening around 19:30. It is alleged a 57-year-old man went to an ATM in Mega City complex to withdraw money. While he was still busy and the machine went offline, he immediately called the emergency number to stop his card activity, said Nonyane. Within a minute the victim received a sms notifying him that he has just withdrew R1000. When he was still surprised at what was happening he received another notification that R150 was withdrew at another ATM. Sale of immature avocados a problem and will be prohibited THE sale of immature avocados has become a problem in the recent couple of years and farmers need to take note of the following. It is now prohibited in terms of the Agricultural Product Standards Act to sell immature avocados. Inspectors from the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) will be testing maturity levels of early season avocados offered for sale. If avocados are found to be immature, the sale of this fruit will be prohibited, according to a press release issued by the South African Growers' Association on January 6. In the past, avocados found by inspectors to be immature were downgraded to 'lowest grade', but could still be sold. Avocado growers are advised to ensure that their fruit meets the required maturity standard before picking. For the cultivar Fuerte, fruit moisture content must be 80% or less. Reputable avocado packhouses are all able to carry out the necessary maturity testing. Inspectors will be checking avocado maturity on the National Fresh Produce Markets. Growers should be sure that their avocados are properly mature before harvesting to ensure that they do not run the risk of their fruit being prohibited from being sold. For further information on maturity testing, contact the Subtropical Growers Association (Subtrop), tel. 015 307 3676.

THE new Nourish library and Eco Village opened near the rural village of Sigagule last month. According to founder Sarah Bergs, on December 11, 2015 marked the opening of the library set on the Orpen road in Mpumalanga. This started out as a vision for sustainable and holistic upliftment for rural communities bordering conservation areas. With dual issues of poverty and poaching hitting this area hard one can only break the cycle by implementing a holistic approach to community development, said Bergs. Bergs said the Nourish library was now a hub for this, with a permaculture garden set out for food security and training, a library for English and reading classes, and homework support, and a small Moringa business model developing. According to Bergs, the Nourish library and eco village is becoming a community hub. Crafting lessons, dancing, singing, and even yoga classes make this a happy positive place for the children from the community to come to after school. Their little feet walk the road to the village daily, as we together walk the journey to better their horizons and education, added Bergs. Feedback from Sihlekisi Primary School Principal Ezekiel Ndlovu, said he was seeing a positive change in the children, in their English skills and confidence. We are so excited for the doors that can open from having this library and eco village hoping to secure funding for aquaponics, ABET courses, bee hives, chickens, and hospitality training in the year to come bringing about our goal--- to bridge communities and conservation, and to make a long term difference, said Bergs. Bergs thanked everyone involved, including Old Mutual for hosting the opening, and to every person who had been a part of this journey, or who would be part of this adventure going forward. SANBS encourages the class of 2015 to continue giving blood THE South African National Blood Service (SANBS) salutes the 2015 matriculants and other learners on their good academic performance. Not only did many of these teenagers manage to perform well at school they also committed themselves to donate blood regularly thereby saving numerous lives. Nationally, people between 16 and 19 constitute 21% percent of SANBSs total active donor base which is approximately 490 000. They have taken the bold step to join the many men and women who go out of their way to donate lifetimes. To ensure that there is sufficient blood stock available, SANBS needs to collect 3000 units of blood every day. Each unit of blood has the potential to save three lives. These young people are truly exemplary South Africans. They have made the decision to sacrifice their time to donate a unit of blood to somebody they might never even meet. "SANBS are proud of them for their willingness to give blood while working hard to excel in their academics and overcoming whatever other life challenges they may face, says Chief Marketing Officer Thapelo Mokoena. The learners consistent participation in blood drives is made possible through carefully considered partnerships with schools throughout the country. Various governing bodies, principals, heads of department, teachers and parents play a big role in encouraging young people to donate blood. Arranging blood drives at schools is not an easy task because the demanding academic schedules and extra-curricular activities must not be compromised. Last year the blood service hosted blood drives at 1161 schools and it invites more schools to become partners and host a blood drive every two months. Mokoena hopes that the matriculants will continue to donate even though they have exited the basic education system: Whether they join the workforce, enroll in a tertiary institution or take a gap year, it will give us great joy to see them saving many more lives from wherever they are and to remain part of the SANBS family for years to come For more information on how to arrange your own blood drive contact 0800 11 90 3 or send an email to customerservice@sanbs. org.za. Hierdie jong mense is waarlik voorbeeldige Suid-Afrikaners.

This clash will take place on February 13 in Polokwane in what will be the fifth consecutive appearance of South Africas most successful Super Rugby team ever in Limpopos capital. The Vodacom Bulls will take to the impressive 45 000-seater World Cup 2010 stadium as part of a partnership between the BlueBulls Company (BBC) and the City of Polokwane aiming to once again generatefunds for tertiary students in Polokwane. Polokwane and Limpopo rugby fans are once again in for a treat as the Vodacom Bulls, under a new coaching regime and bustling with some of the countrys best young talent, will take on the Emirates Lions who dominated the provincial competition by winning the Absa Currie Cup in great style. With kick-off set for 17h00 a host of activities will precede the rugby and the scene will be set for an epic encounter between these two rugby giants. Both teams will be looking to assert a bit of early dominance and will no doubt be looking to send a positive pre-season message to theirfans. Barend van Graan, CEO of the Blue Bulls Company, said that the Polokwane fixture has fast become one of the highlights of their pre-season preparations: The professionalism shown by the organising committee is always of the highest standard and reception we receive from the fans isalso something that our players and management really look forward to. So it is always a real pleasure for our team to play in Polokwane. According to Van Graan, the Vodacom Bulls are keen to become the peoples team and this is a great opportunity to connect with the fans. In this regard, its also a great spectacle for all the rugby fans in Polokwane and the rest of Limpopo, as most of them are not able to travel to Pretoria for Vodacom Super Rugby games. Most importantly, we are honoured that by participating in this match as we can assist in enabling young learners to further their education. We saw the need for funding of students highlighted this year and we are proud to say that we were contributing to education for the last couple of years. Polokwane Executive Mayor, Cllr Thembi Nkadimeng said besides entertainment for the fans, the game presents a welcome opportunity for the municipality to raise funds for tertiary students who will in future assist it in realising the 2030 Smart City Vision. Our appreciation goes to the Blue Bulls Company for their continued partnership on this journey. She called upon Polokwane and Limpopo community to support the event.
