To serve in this position has been a goal since first being elected Sheriff of Butts County in 1992. I am the third generation sheriff, and my family has always actively suppor ted the Association and the Georgia Sheriffs Youth Homes. For over 50 years, the Georgia Sheriffs Youth Homes has provided quality care and loving homes for thousands of Georgia s children. We have had many success stories from our children over the years. Many have grown up to become pillars of their communities who now provide for their own families. There is little doubt that this would not have been possible without our Youth Homes program. We want you to know firsthand that this year has brought forth tremendous challenges for the Youth Homes, and that these next few months will prove increasingly difficult as we continue to provide for the children in our care. Georgia Sheriffs Youth Homes Welcome Fall The breezes are cooler. Crisp, colorful leaves are falling. Summer vacations have come to an end, and school is back in session. Friday nights are devoted to football games, and weekday afternoons are busy with sports practice, fall chores, homework, and school club meetings. Autumn has come to Georgia, and the staff and young people on the Georgia Sheriffs Youth Homes campuses are busy with preparations for the coming holidays. The kitchens are warm and fragrant, and the cottages are bright with the decorating efforts of the young people. You can sense the excitement of the youngsters as they look forward to the holidays! Cherokee Estate and MountainView. Volunteers assist with school activities such as tutoring and sports training, but many others offer assistance with gifts for the children, special meals or parties, seasonal decorations, and organizing holiday celebrations. Supporters of Georgia Sheriffs Youth Homes are invaluable partners in the busy holiday season. Youth of the Year Each year, staff members from the Georgia Sheriffs Youth Homes nominate a resident as the Youth of the Year to represent their campus. The young people are recognized during the Georgia Sheriffs Youth Homes Banquet at the annual conference. For many of them, it s an opportunity to thank the people who have helped them overcome difficult circumstances, as well as the sheriffs throughout the State of Georgia who have supported the Youth Homes. Following are excerpts from their acceptance speeches: Jennifer Boys Ranch Jennifer is 17 years old and a senior at Lowndes High School. She has lived at the Ranch for over three years, and has been involved in the summer Teen Work Program, the drama club, and the mock trial team at school. Jenny is an excellent role model for the other girls at the Ranch and a very deserving recipient of the Youth of the Year Award. A selection of the poem Jennifer wrote for the occasion is included below: From place to place, I search for a home, From one to another, I move along. At last I find a surge of hope, My heart swells with joy, as love once again surrounds me. It s overwhelming, this emotion I feel, But I know now it s strong as steel. As I gaze upon the night sky, The stars shining bright, I stare in awe as I realize, I ve finally found a place to call HOME! Dakota Pineland Dakota has been at Pineland for a year and a half, and during that time has greatly improved his grades. He is a motivated individual who now believes in himself, and this has given him the ability to accomplish many things this year. I have been through a lot in my life, and I have also seen a lot, but coming to Pineland was a big change for my brother and me. Pineland has helped me turn my life around and get on the right path. When I first came to Pineland, I had a bad attitude, my behavior wasn t good, I was not in school and did not care what happened. But Pineland has brought me to see that it was all wrong and the wrong way to go about things. I have been in Pineland for a year and six months, and achieved many goals and tasks that I thought would never happen. Pineland has brought me a long way in life, and they gave me many skills and tools that I would need to live a successful life. They have showed me care, love and discipline and have been like a family to me. It is places like Pineland that really help kids make something out of themselves when they have no other place to go in life. 6 The Georgia Sheriff www.georgiasheriffs.org

Timothy Mountain View Timothy was in several foster homes before he came to Mountain- View. He is 17 and a senior at Murray County High School. He worked this past summer at the local Boys and Girls Club. Timothy is a good student and looking forward to college. I can t tell you how blessed I am to be at MountainView. I am actually at a place where I truly belong. It really is a miracle that I came to MountainView, which is without a doubt the best place I have ever lived. At MountainView I don t experience abuse, sadness, or negativity. Instead it s family, positivity, fun, happiness, joy, love, and peace. I would like to thank all of you. I am truly grateful that we have people who really care about us. We have benefited from you all, and if it wasn t for you all, I wouldn t have a home to go to. Ashley Cherokee Estate Ashley is 14 and a very energetic young lady. She is a freshman at Southeast High School this fall. She is an excellent student and participates in track and field. She has been a resident of Cherokee Estate for two and a half years. When I first arrived at Cherokee Estate I was upset and hated the world, and I started out on the wrong foot. I realized that going home wasn t the best thing for me. I want to thank the Georgia Sheriffs Youth Homes for all the support that you have given youth over the years with help and love from houseparents, staff and counselors. You have provided benefits for me to completely change my personality and my actions to become the person I am. Thank you very much. W. S. Harms Award Lamar, Herrington Homestead The W. S. Harms Award is presented annually to a resident who has overcome many obstacles in life. The Harms Award is given by Barbara (Mrs. William) Harms and her daughter, Sharon, in honor of Dr. William Harms, who overcame many physical difficulties to teach at the Medical College of Georgia. Lamar, 16, is a resident at Herrington Homestead. He came to live at Herrington shortly before Christmas in 2009. He always has a warm smile on his face, and he has shown himself willing to help others. Because Lamar came to us with some medical problems, he has benefited from the treatment that has been available to him through the Georgia Sheriffs Youth Homes. Fall Youth Home Activities! In September, many Georgia Sheriffs Youth Homes children attended the NASCAR race at the Atlanta Motor Speedway, thanks to Henry County Sheriff Keith McBrayer. The children toured the speedway and met some tour members, as well as participated in activities inside the speedway. Our thanks to Sheriff McBrayer and NASCAR! The boys from MountainView were thrilled to attend a NASCAR event! p i n e l a n d The boys of Pineland recently made their way to the North Georgia Mountains for an action-packed experience in the great outdoors. They camped at Desoto Falls Recreation Area in the Chattahoochee National Forest. They also went river rafting and visited Helen s Water Park. They learned how to pan for gold and gems and experienced gold rush fever courtesy of Crisson Gold Mine in Dahlonega. Thank you to all who helped with this endeavor, and especially White County Sheriff Neal Walden and Lumpkin County Sheriff Stacy Jarrard. The boys help out with chores on the farm at Pineland. Square bales of hay is a phrase that sometimes gets moans and groans, but when the time comes for work, the boys all pitch in and get it done. Their work is important in keeping the farm running, and they are learning valuable lessons and skills. Thank you to Kyle Snider, Marion County Sheriff Horace Snider, Oak Crest Lumber, and Henry Griffin for providing and hauling hay for the cattle on the Pineland farm. Without their help, Pineland would be purchasing hay this year. The boys from Pineland enjoyed game day with the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field. h e r r i n g t o n h o m e s t e a d Herrington residents worked with Lisa Jarriel, Resident Director, on some of the decorations around the campus as they prepare for their fall activities. Lamar is wearing his creative outfit for school tacky day. Maintenance for the campus is a full time job. Stephen, a recent high school graduate and Herrington Homestead resident, washes one of the cottages. This young resident was helping clean out a ditch directing rainwater from the cottages out into the woods. Some of the boys at Herrington lay pine straw and pull weeds from the flower beds to keep the campus looking beautiful. B O Y S r a n c h Study hall takes place every week day after classes at Lowndes County High School, Hahira Middle School, and Hahira Elementary School. Volunteer tutors assist with studies and try to work with each student individually, whenever possible. Our Boys Ranch beauties enjoyed dressing up for the special homecoming festivities at Lowndes County High School. Bryant, Abagayle, Malachi and Devonta, from Steele Cottage, worked on a community service project painting the South Georgia House of Hope as part of a community service project. Abagayle is the daughter of Todd and Debbie Mican, the houseparents of Steele Cottage. The South Georgia House of Hope is a home for women struggling with alcohol, drugs or abuse. 12 The Georgia Sheriff www.georgiasheriffs.org

Memorial Fund Many of our friends and supporters find the Georgia Sheriffs Youth Homes Memorial Fund a practical means of helping a child and simultaneously commemorating a departed friend or loved one. Donations can be made in memory of loved ones or in honor of a friend or loved one on their birthday, anniversary, or a special occasion. All monies contributed to the Memorial Fund are used for only two purposes: to further the education of our seniors through college or vocational school, and for capital improvements that will serve our children in the future. f u n d r a i s e r s BIKES and BADGES The Harris County Sheriff s Office held its 10th annual Bikes and Badges Ride in October. The ride concluded at Camp Pioneer on the Pineland Campus in LaGrange. One hundred-eighty riders participated in the event, which featured stops in Columbus, Hamilton, Warm Springs and Greenville, and was joined by a group of riders from Coweta County. D.P. LAND DICE RUN The 9th Annual Sgt. D.P. Land Dice Run, sponsored by the Forsyth County Sheriff s Office, was held in September in Forsyth County. All proceeds went to the Georgia Sheriffs Youth Homes. A special thanks goes out to all the volunteers who helped coordinate the event, especially Karleen Chalker. Every volunteer played a significant role in the success of this event. FLINT RIVER POKER FLOAT Mitchell County Sheriff W. E. Bozeman and Baker County Sheriff Dana Meade combined resources for the first Flint River Poker Float benefiting the Georgia Sheriffs Youth Homes. Participants cruised down the Flint River from the entry point in Mitchell County to the exit point in Newton. Several residents from the Boys Ranch and Pineland were also able to participate. Mitchell County Sheriff W. E. The 2nd Annual Ride for the Kids, hosted by Murray County Sheriff Howard Ensley, was a successful ride led by Captain Donald Ridley of the Murray County Sheriff s Office. The event started at the sheriff s office and continued to Hotrod n Harley s in Gilmer County, adding more bikes. They continued for a scenic ride ending at Fort Mountain State Park, where some of the MountainView boys joined them for lunch. The riders were also joined by Miss United States, Erin Grizzle. The ride began at Sandy Creek Park in Athens and continued to historic Madison before returning to Athens. The ride benefited the Georgia Sheriffs Youth Homes and the Clarke County D.A.R.E. program. The winner of the 2010 Sheriffs Youth Homes Raffle was Chris Greene of Cordele. Mr. Greene, the owner of Misdemeanor Probation Services, purchased $1,000 in raffle tickets to help us raise money for the Georgia Sheriffs Youth Homes. Sheriffs who raised the most for Georgia Sheriffs Youth Homes in the past year based upon per capita county population are pictured, left to right: Forsyth County Sheriff Ted Paxton, Sumter County Sheriff Pete Smith, Lowndes County Sheriff Chris Prine, and Murray County Sheriff Howard Ensley. This year, four deputies received the Deputy Sheriff of the Year Award of Valor, an award which recognizes a deputy who demonstrated an act of conspicuous heroism or bravery in the line of duty. Deputy Ana Smith of the Hall County Sheriff s Office received the 2010 Georgia Sheriffs Association Award of Valor. Hall County Sheriff Steve Cronic, pictured at right with Deputy Smith, said she selflessly put herself in harm s way in order to save the life of another person. Deputy Smith responded to a fire in a mobile home in Gainesville. The resident, a mother of two, had succeeded in bringing her children outside to safety and then re-entered the home to retrieve some of their belongings. Deputy Smith repeatedly begged the woman to come out of the mobile home, and when she refused, Deputy Smith entered the burning home and physically carried the woman out to safety. The woman was subsequently taken to the hospital and treated for smoke inhalation. Sergeant Kenneth Yarbrough (left) and Deputy First Class Mark Seabolt (center) with Lt. Col. Gene Moss, of the Forsyth County Sheriff s Office received the Award of Valor for their action on a snowy day early this year. Sergeant Yarbrough and Deputy Seabolt responded to a motor vehicle accident in which a car had overturned, traveled down a steep embankment, and rolled into a creek. When they arrived, they found the driver suspended upside down with her knees pinned under the dashboard. The driver was submerged in frigid water, injured, and beginning to panic. Other rescue workers arrived and worked to remove the passenger door to extricate the driver, but Deputy Seabolt and Sergeant Yarbrough stood in the water, taking turns holding her head out of the water and comforting her. In their selfless acts, they helped support the injured driver during a very frightening accident, and also helped save her life. Deputy Terry Miller, center, of the Walker County Sheriff s Office received the 2010 Deputy Sheriff Award of Valor for an act of heroism while attempting to execute a warrant. The suspect fired upon Deputy Miller and a Ft. Oglethorpe Police Officer after pulling over in front of a busy restaurant, striking the police officer and hitting another police vehicle. Deputy Miller reacted without hesitation or concern for his personal safety, drew his weapon and fired two precise rounds at the suspect, ending the crisis. The President s Award recognizes a sheriff for outstanding support and dedication to the Georgia Sheriffs Youth Homes. Sheriff Cronic has been a consistent contributor to the Georgia Sheriffs Youth Homes. In his first year in office he hosted the Hall County Sheriff s Office Motorcycle Ride benefiting the GSYH. The annual motorcycle ride, now in its ninth year, secures contributions from local corporate sponsors and riders, and is a very popular event. Sheriff Cronic also hosts the annual Sheriff s Golf Tournament, which continues to grow each year. He is the proud sponsor of the Hall County Sheriff s Office Bike Program, which was organized to provide bicycles for needy children. Sheriff Cronic personally delivers several bicycles to the Youth Homes for the residents, as well as making sure children in working families get new bikes. The Sheriff of the Year Award recognizes a sheriff who has made outstanding contributions to the Office of Sheriff, law enforcement, and the community. Crisp County Sheriff Donnie Haralson, center, is the recipient of the 2010 Sheriff of the Year. He has served as Sheriff of Crisp County since 1985, and has served on many local, state and regional boards for law enforcement, justice and corrections. Sheriff Haralson has served as the Crisp County Emergency Management Director the past nineteen years, and has received community recognition for leading the community through a disaster. Colonel Horace William Billy Hancock, left, of the Crisp County Sheriff s Office received the 2010 Award of Professionalism. Nominated by Crisp County Sheriff Donnie Haralson, Colonel Hancock is an accomplished instructor, serves as chief deputy, and assists with the direction of the Crisp County Emergency Management Agency. His dedication to the motto Integrity First, Service Before Self, is always evident in the performance of his duties, said Sheriff Haralson. The Meritorious Service Award recognizes a citizen who has promoted and provided unwavering support of the Office of Sheriff or assisted law enforcement during a precarious or life-threatening incident. Steve Syfan nominated by Hall County Sheriff Steve Cronic has provided many contributions that have allowed the Hall County Sheriff s Office to increase the effectiveness of the deputies, as well as ensured their safety. Mr. Syfan s contributions have allowed the sheriff s office to purchase two specially trained drug dogs, as well as additional less-than-lethal weapons for deputies assigned to the Hall County courthouse. He has provided funding for a vehicle for the K-9 Bomb Unit. He has also taken a personal interest in the welfare and morale of the deputies, including covering household expenses for a deputy wounded in the line of duty and covering travel expenses for the Hall County Sheriff s Office Honor Guard attending a presentation honoring fallen heroes in Washington, D.C. He has also hosted several appreciation dinners to demonstrate his support for the sheriff s office. Mr. Syfan is someone who consistently supports the sheriff s office, giving freely of his time, assets, and talent, said Sheriff Cronic. v o l u n t e e r S P o t l i g h t J. C. Burke Given Honorary Life Member Award When J.C. Burke, a retired nursery owner and operator from Fruitland Park, Florida, purchased a tract of land and built a house in Ben Hill County, he became friends with Ben Hill County Sheriff Bobby McLemore. During one of their visits, Mr. Burke asked Sheriff McLemore if there was a Sheriffs Boys Ranch in Georgia. Sheriff McLemore replied that in fact there were several Sheriffs Youth Homes in Georgia. Mr. Burke told Sheriff McLemore that he had always supported the Florida Sheriffs Boys Ranch, and now he wanted to do something for the Georgia Sheriffs Youth Homes. A collector of Winchester Model.94 guns, Mr. Burke began donating a gun each year for raffles to benefit the Youth Homes. Two previous raffles of the prized guns have netted more than $10,000 for the Youth Homes, and the third Model.94 was raffled this fall. Both of the previous guns were won by local supporters. It was an honor to present Mr. J. C. Burke recently with an Honorary Life Member Award from the Georgia Sheriffs Association in recognition of his contribution to and support for the Georgia Sheriffs Youth Homes. J. C. Burke is a man of honor and integrity, and I am proud to call him my friend, said Sheriff McLemore at the presentation. During the holiday season, busy people intent on trying to complete their Christmas shopping may fall prey to unscrupulous criminals who lurk in mall and shopping center parking lots, doing their shopping from the packages placed in parked vehicles. Some foresight and planning can reduce the chances of becoming a victim during a season that should be a joyous and loving celebration. When shopping, look for the best-lit parking spaces. Once in your chosen space, look around before leaving your car. Is there anyone in the vicinity watching you? Do you see anyone loitering? If so, remain in your car and watch them for a moment. If they move on, that s fine, but if not, you might consider moving to a new parking space. If you feel uncertain or unsafe about a situation you observe, take steps to move yourself to a safer location. Don t assume you are being foolish or paranoid. Once you are in a safer location, lock your vehicle and move quickly and confidently to the store. Wouldbe thieves and robbers are looking for the easiest targets. If you show that you are aware of what is happening around you and move with a sense of purpose, you are less likely to become a victim. Walk against the flow of traffic. Keep your head up and scan look forward, to the right and left, and even check behind as you walk. Awareness is your greatest defense. Don t search through a purse or bags in the parking lot. If you must look for something, make sure you are in the safety of the store before you become absorbed in your hunt for your keys, shopping list, or other item. If you store items in your vehicle, make sure they are covered or concealed. If you are putting bags in your vehicle and returning to shop, move your car from time to time in case someone is watching you. Finally, if leaving late from a shopping mall or store, don t hesitate to ask a store employee or security guard for help. Don t accept the kind offer of the stranger who meets you outside the door and offers assistance. It may be a kind and generous offer, but it could also be a ploy to gain access to your belongings.
