Saturday, September 7 We meet at OR Tambo Airport in Johannesburg for our flight departing at 13:35 to Port-Louis. We arrive in the capital of Mauritius at 19:35 (note the two-hour time difference) and transfer to our resort, located at Balaclava Bay on the island s the north-west coast. Sunday, September 8 After breakfast, we have Sunday Mass. After that we have the day at leisure, just relaxing at one of the resort s two pools or at the beach, or making use of the many activities offered. Monday, September 9 Today is the day we see Pope Francis at the Mass (venue to be confirmed at the time of writing). In the morning we are collected by a private tour bus which takes us to Port-Louis. The bus takes us back to our resort after the Papal Mass. The Pope chose the date because it is the feast day of Blessed Jacques-Désiré Laval (1803-1864), the missionary who evangelised Mauritius. The Church of St Francis and the Shrine of Pere Laval. Tuesday, September 10 Today we have the whole day off to relax or taking advantage of the many activities offered at our resort. Wednesday, September 11 Today we explore Catholic Mauritius with a professional guide. We go to St Francis of Assisi Church at Pamplemousses, followed by a visit to one of the oldest cemeteries on the island. The church is the oldest standing edifice of the Catholic faith on Mauritius, dating to the 1750s. At Port-Louis we visit the Shrine of Pere Laval, with the tomb of the Apostle of Mauritius, a French Spiritan priest who was the first of the country and of his order to be beatified, in 1979. We then visit the Cathedral of St Louis, which was built in 1814/15 and promoted to cathedral in 1847. We round off our Catholic tour at Marie Reine de la Paix, an open church built in 1940/41 on the side of Signal mountain, where you have a beautiful panoramic view of Port-Louis. Presiding over the church and looking over the city is a 3 metre-high marble statue of Our Lady holding a globe. Before returning to our resort, we have time at leisure in Port-Louis. Thursday, September 12 Today we have the very special experience of a half-day retreat at the beach, guided by Fr Russell Pollitt SJ, our spiritual director, as the waves of the Indian Ocean lap on the shore on this tropical island to remind us of God s creation.
