JOINT SECTION (PIKES PEAK & MILE-HIGH SECTION) PICNIC - JULY 11, 2015 This year s Joint Section Picnic will be held at Maguireville in Monument, Colorado. Maguireville began many years ago when Jim and Donna Maguire purchased a horse ranch just east of I-25 in Monument. Donna set out to furnish the house with antiques from the late 1800 s and early 1900 s. Jim caught the Bug and from there the Bug just grew and grew. The interior of the barn was made over into a large social area surrounded by the original horse stalls converted into reproductions of businesses from rural America. Each business is fully outfitted with original furnishings that Jim has collected over the years. As Jim turned over more of his ownership responsibilities at Overhead Door to his son Kevin, this gave him more time to collect memorabilia for Maguireville and collect he did and still does. After filling the barn a large second building was built to display items associated with transportation and craftsmen s tools of the era. Next came exterior displays including a Cripple Creek miner s cabin that was disassembled log by log and reassembled at Maguireville. As I was leaving Maguireville a couple of months ago, a friend of mine who was making his first visit to Maguireville stated This is one of the best keep secrets in El Paso County. For more information on Maguireville, access the Web. If you would like to spend a few hours with old and new Star friends, enjoying catered barbeque while surrounded by memorabilia from your parent s and grandparent s era, plan to attend this year s Joint Section Picnic. All you need to do is RSVP by July 6, 2015 and arrive with $10 for each adult and $5 for each child under 12. On July 11, 2015 plan to arrive between 12:00 PM and 12:30 PM. Food will be served at 1:00 PM. To RSVP, contact Clark or Karen Absher at (719) 749-2621 or clarkabsher@aol.com. Directions to Maguireville will be provided in next month s newsletter. 11
