TRIPS OF BULGARIAN RESIDENTS IN ABROAD AND ARRIVALS OF VISITORS FROM ABROAD TO BULGARIA IN FEBRUARY 2011 In February 2011, the number of the trips of Bulgarian residents in abroad was 246.2 thousand or 2.5% more than the number of the trips in February 2010 (Table 1). An increase in the total number of the trips was registered namely to: Latvia - by 33.3%, Austria - by 26.9%, Romania - by 18.0%, Ukraine - by 10.7%, Greece - by 8.3%, Belgium - by 6.1%, United Kingdom - by 4.9%, Hungary - by 4.5% and Poland - by 3.2%. At the same time a decrease in the number of the trips was observed to: Canada - by 87.5%, Norway - by 73.9%, Malta - by 57.8%, Lithuania - by 53.3%, Israel - by 47.2%, Czech Republic - by 38.3%, Switzerland - by 29.1%, Slovenia - by 28.4%, and etc. The highest share of the trips of Bulgarian citizens travelling abroad had the holiday and recreation purpose - 38.2%, followed up by trips with professional purpose - 34.9%, visits as guests - 26.0%, and others - 0.9%. Structure of the trips of Bulgarian residents abroad by purpose of visit in February 2011 0.9% Holiday and recreation 34.9% 38.2% As guests Professional purpose Others 26.0% In February 2011, the number of the arrivals of visitors from abroad to Bulgaria was 291.3 thousand or 6.6% more than the number of the trips in the corresponding month of 2010 (Table 2). An increase in the number of visitors with holiday and recreation purpose by 9.7% was registered. The visits with the professional purpose and visitors passing transit were increased by 9.1 and 4.8% respectively. At the same time, a decrease was recorded in visits with other purposes by 4.6%. 1

The highest growth in the number of visits was observed from France and Cyprus - 23.3 and 12.1% respectively. A decrease in the visits was registered from Netherlands - by 24.8%, Slovenia - by 24.0%, Denmark - by 22.9%, etc. The visits of foreigners in the group Other European countries 1 were increased by 10.2%. The largest growth in the number of the arrivals of citizens was observed from Ukraine - by 24.9%, Russian Federation - by 22.4% and Serbia - by 16.4%. In February 2011, arrivals by purpose holiday and recreation composed the greatest share of the total number of foreigners visited to Bulgaria - 46.6%, followed by visitors passing transit - 26.4%, professional purpose - 14.9%, other purposes - 8.8%, and visits as guests - 3.3%. Methodological notes Statistical data on the trips of Bulgarian citizens travelling abroad and visits by foreigners in Bulgaria are obtained on the basis of monthly information received from the Ministry of Interior and sample survey of the National Statistical Institute among Bulgarian and foreign citizens passing the border check points. Data on the number of the trips of the citizens of the European Union are estimated on the basis of the information obtained from the Ministry of Interior and the airport authorities. Data on the number of citizens of third countries are obtained directly from the Ministry of Interior. Data on the purposes of the trips are developed on the basis of the NSI s regular monthly sample survey of passing Bulgarian and foreign citizens on the border check points. 4
