This year's theme for National Library Week is Libraries Lead. Tuesday, April 10 th 10:00am 4:00pm - Book Sale Saturday, April 14 th 1:00 pm - Movie Simon & Garfunkle in Central Park Anita Shreve October 7,1946 - March 29,2018 Anita Shreve, who explored themes of love, loss and betrayal in bestselling works of fiction, and whose 1998 novel, The Pilot's Wife, sold millions of copies after Oprah Winfrey chose it for her television book club, died March 29 at her home in Newfields, N.H. She was 71. The cause was breast cancer. Stop in and checkout one of Anita s works.

Bring your latest project and join the group as they knit by the library fireplace every Tuesday evening. This is a drop in group, registration is not necessary. Thanks to the generous donations from our patrons, the sale will offer new selections in all areas. Stock up on a great selection of books. SATURDAY AFTERNOON AT THE MOVIES Simon and Garfunkel The Concert in Central Park When: Saturday, April 14 th Time: 1:00pm Where: Library Screening Room Join us for the historic September 1981 concert that reunited the famed folk duo after an 11- year break. Simon and Garfunkel performed in front of more than 500,000 people at this free benefit concert in Central Park, New York City. Proceeds from the concert recording went toward the redevelopment and maintenance of Central Park, which had deteriorated due to lack of municipal funding. Simon and Garfunkel's performance was praised by music critics and the album was commercially successful; it peaked at number six on the Billboard 200 album charts.
BEGINNER QUILTING - PILLOW CASE When: Tuesday, April 17 th & 24 th Time: 6:00pm - 8:00pm When: Wednesday, April 18 th & 25 th Time: 10:00am - noon Would you like to learn how to quilt? Join local seamstress Cathlene Hartson as she teaches the basics of quilt making. This four session workshop will include demonstrations and hands-on work at Massena Public Library s new quilting lab. You will learn the techniques of quilting and work on your own quilt project. Sessions will include: rotary cutting, machine piecing, sashing, corner stones, borders, batting and backing selections, quilting, binding and labeling. These sessions guarantee to jump start your quilting abilities. DAMS OF THE RAQUETTE RIVER Community Conversation with Mary Jane Watson. When: Saturday, April 21 st Time: 2:00pm Where: Presentation begins at the Massena Public Library then moves to the Celine G. Philibert Memorial Cultural Centre & Museum for the exhibit and refreshments. The Library and the Celine G. Philibert Memorial Cultural Centre & Museum present Dams of the Raquette River, a community conversation. Mary Jane s presentation is part of the ongoing Tauny exhibit Look Down, You ll See Our Tracks currently on display at the Celine G. Philibert Memorial Cultural Centre & Museum. The Raquette River is the most dammed river east of the Mississippi. Explore the many dams on the River via photos and discussion. Jane Watson has been active in the Raquette River Blueway Corridor Project for many years. She has done extensive research on the history of the Raquette River, including the construction of its many dams. Mary Jane has served on the Advisory Committee which seeks to make the Raquette River a regional tourist destination. She has compiled an extensive digital collection of historic photos from along the 174 mile long Raquette River, the second longest river in New York State. SEWING LAB When: Wednesdays Time: 1:00pm-4:30pm When: Saturdays Time: 10:00am - 4:00pm Would you like to work on your sewing or quilting project in the Library s sewing lab? We ve established weekly open lab times to allow you to use the Library s sewing machines and equipment. Please register at the circulation desk and sign a waiver before you use the lab. The library's Sewing Lab is equipped with six heavy duty Singer sewing machines, cutting mats, scissors, rotary cutters, irons & ironing boards - but please bring your own machine if you prefer!
BOOK CLUB EVENING When: May 22 nd Time: 6:30pm -8:00pm Our Library Book Club selection for April is Toms River: A Story of Science and Salvation. This 2013 non-fiction book by American author Dan Fagin focuses on the dumping of industrial pollution by chemical companies into Toms River, New Jersey, beginning in 1952 through the 1980s, and the epidemiological investigations of a cancer cluster that subsequently emerged there. The book won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction, the 2014 Helen Bernstein Book Award for Excellence in Journalism, and the 2014 National Academies Communication Award. LOCAL BATTLE OF THE BOOKS Date: April 16 th Time: 5:00pm Battle of the Books is a book-based trivia tournament for children in grades 4-6. Teams of 3 to 4 students will compete in local Battle to determine which team will move on to the Regional Battle. Pre-registration is required. LEGO CLUB Date: Saturday, April 21 st Time: 10:00 am Children 6 and up are invited to join us for Lego club. The objects you build will be on display at the library. HANGING BIRD FEEDER Date: Saturday, April 21 st Time: 2:00 pm In honor of earth day help us recycle some old materials into hanging bird feeders. All materials are supplied by the library and each person attending will be able to take their bird feeder home to hang up. No registration required.
