MUSEUM OF THE RED RIVER 10 Day Tour of RAZIL May 14-23, 2019

Dear Friends, razil remains one of the world's great travel destinations. Our Spring, 2019 trip there will provide experiences combining culture, history, and natural beauty. We begin in enchanting Rio de Janeiro where carioca charm and the spirit of Carnival permeate the City. Traveling through mountain rainforest to visit the Corcovado Christ Statue, trekking Sugar Loaf Mountain, and enjoying Ipanema and Copacabana beaches are just a few highlights. A national flight to the three nations border region with Argentina and Paraguay brings us to spectacular Iguassu Falls, the world's most extensive waterfalls, and I would argue most beautiful. Surrounded by exotic wildlife, it is a bucket-list site for those who appreciate nature. We complete the tour in historic Ouro Preto and neighboring towns, where nearly 80% of the world's gold supply went through in the 18th century. Their wealth provided support for the arts, and the region hosts the largest concentration of colonial aroque art in the world. I should also mention that mines around Ouro Preto provide the world with imperial topaz, making the city a major center for the razilian gem trade. Haggling for precious emeralds, aquamarines, tourmalines and even diamonds is a daily occurrence, and you can certainly return home with bargains! This will truly be a trip of a lifetime. Please consider joining us. Henry Moy ITINERARY DAY 1: Tues., May 14 - Dallas/En Route Depart from Dallas for your overnight flight to Rio de Janeiro, razil. DAY 2: Wed., May 15 Rio de Janeiro AM: Welcome to Rio! Upon your arrival you will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel. Visit the Tomorrow Museum En route to the hotel you will visit the Tomorrow Museum, which is a postmodern, organic, and sustainable building, an icon of the cultural identity of Rio de Janeiro today. The main exhibition is mostly digital and it focuses on ideas rather than objects. It provides an environment of explorations and questions about the time of great changes, in addition to exhibits that warn about the dangers of climate change, environmental degradation, and social collapse.

Rio de Janeiro - Rio de Janeiro, the so called Marvelous City, is the capital of Rio de Janeiro State. The second largest city in razil, it is nevertheless a beach resort, located by the Atlantic Ocean and by the big Guanabara ay. Rio is graced by its topography. The city is spread out over a 24 kilometer long strip of land, nestled between mountains and sea. There are 45 kilometers separating downtown Flamengo from far flung Recreio, bordered on one side by the blue ocean, on the other by verdant hills. DAY 3: Thurs., May 16 - Rio de Janeiro AM: Historic Walking Tour of Rio de Janeiro Your day starts with a visit to the historic center of Rio. Discover the highlights of downtown Rio on foot. Explore the Portuguese colonial heart of the city, Praça XV. Walk down Uruguaiana Street, Carioca Square, and up to the Metropolitan Cathedral. See the beautiful Candelaria Church and the new and renovated Mauá Square, with a wide view of the Olympic oulevard. PM: Visit Sugar Loaf In the afternoon you will proceed to Praia Vermelha, where you will visit Sugar Loaf. oard a cable car for a two-staged ascent up Sugar Loaf Mountain. Your first stop is on a hill called Morro da Urca on which several gardens and panoramic viewing platforms are located. When you arrive at the second stop you will enjoy a spectacular view over Rio de Janeiro, its beaches, and Guanabara ay. At the horizon you can see Corcovado. DAY 4: Fri., May 17 - Rio de Janeiro/Foz do Iguacu AM: Excursion to Corcovado Your day starts with an excursion to Corcovado. You will be transferred to the rail station to board a cogtrain for the ride through Tijuca Forest up Corcovado Mountain. The train ride is a wonderful opportunity for a closer look at the forest s lush tropical vegetation and to enjoy scenic landscapes of the beaches and city. From the top you will take a panoramic elevator up to the most famous emblem of razil and Rio de

Janeiro. On the top of Corcovado is the towering statue of Christ the Redeemer. From this viewing platform you can enjoy one of the most spectacular views in the world. You will return along Rio s celebrated beaches. PM: Visit the Carnival Experience At the Carnival Experience you will learn about the history of Carnival and see the large parade floats and the costumes. Later you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Foz do Iguaçu. Upon your arrival you will be transferred to the hotel. Foz do Iguaçu is located in the extreme west of the State of Parana, on the border of razil with Paraguay and Argentina. The word Iguaçu means large water, in Tupi-Guarani etymology. It is a perfect name for Iguassu s waterfalls, one of the planet s natural wonders, with 275 waterfalls and an average height of 60 meters. DAY 5: Sat., May 18 - Iguassu Falls,D AM: This morning you will visit the razilian side of the Falls. The highlight is the point at which you cross the walkways leading to the edge of the Falls. With airborne water droplets creating colorful rainbows, the humidity here is such that it is impossible to stay dry. PM: In the afternoon you will visit the Argentinian side of the Falls. You will travel by jungle train and arrive at a breathtaking canyon called Garganta del Diabolo (Canyon of the devil).

Dinner: Enjoy a barbecue dinner and show at a local restaurant. DAY 6: Sun., May 19 Foz do Iguacu /elo Horizonte/Ouro Preto After breakfast at the hotel you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to elo Horizonte. Upon your arrival in elo Horizonte you will depart immediately for Ouro Preto. DAY 7: Mon., May 20 Ouro Preto/Mariana/Congonhas/Ouro Preto Full Day Excursion to Mariana and Congonhas This morning you will travel to Mariana, the jewel of the colonial period, and enjoy a city tour. This enchanted city, founded in 1696, was, for a short time the capital of the State of Minas Gerais. It was originally called Royal Village of Our Lady of Carmel. In 1745 it received its present name, which was in honor of Queen Maria Ana. As you stroll down its picturesque streets you will see houses that date from the beginning of the 18th century, with their balconies of wood, iron, and even soapstone. In Minas Gerais Plaza, the churches of St. Francis of Assissi with its richly sculptured door, Our Lady of Carmel, the City Hall, and the Pillory can be found. Next, you will travel to Congonhas, which contains important works from the Golden Age of razil. The main points of interest are Aleijadinho's sculptural masterpieces of the twelve Prophets, carved in soapstone and his sculptural representation of the Via Crucis (Stations of the Cross), done in polychromatic woodwork. The set of life-sized sculptures is razil's greatest artistic treasure. The settlement of Congonhas began with the search for gold at the beginning of the 18th century. Return to Ouro Preto. DAY 8: Tues., May 21 Ouro Preto Walking Tour of Ouro Preto The best place to see the old razilian "Gold Towns" is Ouro Preto, which means black gold. The town was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. In Ouro Preto you will find the country's best preserved collection of aroque architecture. Ouro Preto was the center of the late 17th century gold rush. First known as Vila Rica, it was just a mountain village when crowds of adventurers from the Atlantic coast came in search of slaves and gold. Near Vila Rica they found a strange black stone and sent samples to Portugal. In fact, they had discovered gold (the black coloration was from iron oxide in the soil).

DAY 9: Wed., May 22 Ouro Preto/elo Horizonte/Rio de Janeiro After breakfast at the hotel you will be transferred to elo Horizonte airport for your flight to Rio de Janeiro where you will connect with your return flight home. You will have some time for last minute shopping and lunch on your own before you return to the airport. DAY 10: Thurs., May 23 - Dallas Your tour ends, and you return home with memories of interesting places and joyful times shared with a group of wonderful people. = reakfast; D = Dinner FAR HORIZONS 30 Two ridges Road, Suite 250, Fairfield, NJ 07004 Phone: 973-287-1719 or 877-482-8747 E-mail: info@fhorizons.com
