Chapter Directors Welcome May and hopefully warmer weather! April has come and gone. We started the month out with our Annual Pancake Breakfast fundraiser. Although attendance was down, the breakfast was a success. We raised some money and we had some fun. It was good seeing people from the other chapters. We followed that with our Bust the Rust ride. Our Ride Coordinator, Steve Norbrey, set up and lead a ride to Food for Thought in Williamsburg, VA. We had a total of 4 bikes on the ride. Rose and I had planned on going until our realtor made a last-minute switch on us. We also had a dinner social at DE Soul Restaurant in Brandywine, MD. Stan and Shelley were the POCs. 24 people came out for the event. Food was great and the friends were better. Great night sorry you missed it. One very important note, for those who don t know, Julie A Hearn fell while walking the dogs and broke her hip. After 2 surgeries, including a hip replacement, she is recovering well. Please give a call and check on her. Keep her and Bob in your prayers. This leads me into our next event. With Julie down, Ray and Cheryl Hartman hosted the dinner social originally scheduled for Bob and Julie s. Good food and good times Lots of fun and companionship. On Friday the 13 th, I had my first good ride of the season. 2018 Chapter Staff Chapter Directors Roger & Rose TenBrink rtwanderer1@yahoo.com Assistant Chapter Directors Bob & Julie Ahearn avcmawnac@gmail.com Correspondence n Coordinator Gerry Yager bikermom47@gmail.com Treasurer Robin Little rdl@md.metrocast.net Motorist Awareness Bill Little falconwlittle@aim.com Membership Enhancement Bob & Julie A`Hearn avcmawnac@gmail.com CHOY Coordinator Gerry Yager bikermom47@gmail.com Goodwill Ambassador Robin Little rdl@md.metrocast.net Webmaster Tony Fontaine yellowwing10@verizon.net Couple of the Year Steve and Linda Norbrey SteveNorbrey@hotmail.com Ride Coordinator Steve Norbrey SteveNorbrey@hotmail.com Newsletter Editor Charleen Hartman gwrramdinews@yahoo.com Rode the bike to work. While at work, it was decided that I should go check out the six schools in Calvert County I will be working on this spring. All in all, it worked out to be a nice 130 miles on a beautiful day. Looking forward to many more of these days this year. I am once again setting my goal for 15,000 miles this year. I came up short last year because of some bad discussions on my part. I won t make those mistakes this year. I hope all of you set a goal for riding this year and make your goal. 1

Assistant Chapter Directors & Membership Enhancement Coordinators Welcome to May 2018! Last month, things took a turn for the worse when I received a call from Julie. She informed me that she fell, and had been laying in the road, close to our home for over 30 Minutes before a neighbor found her. She mentioned she thought she broke her left hip, couldn t walk and she tried to drag herself home but was in too much pain to continue. By the time I reached the house from work, the ambulance had already picked her up and delivered her to the Emergency Room at St. Mary s Hospital. Sure enough, the X-Rays verified what she thought her left hip was broken. Two surgeries later, Humpty Dumpty is all back together. It took some metal rods, screws, bolts, and cables along with a full hip replacement on the left side. Recovery time now until August. She s now home, gets around with her Walker, and has a Physical Therapist coming to the house two to three times a week. Our travel plans have changed for this year. We ll adjust as necessary, and plan to participate in as much as we can in the coming months. We like to thank those few who visited us in the Hospital, or provided some home cooked meals, and sent their thoughts and prayers via Facebook. It was all well received. The moral of the story please be careful and always carry your cell phone with you no matter where you go. The Life Alert is also an option. This month s schedule consists of: Saturday May 5 th is the Chapter B Fund Raiser at the Elks Lodge. Sunday May 6 th is our monthly Gathering. Saturday May 12 th is the First District Ride. Saturday May 19 th is the Progressive Dinner Ride. Dinner Social on Tuesday the 22 th Location TBD. Friday May 25 th to Monday May 28 th is our annual Memorial Day weekend ride location Blue Ridge Parkway / Roanoke / Bedford, VA. 4

Webmaster Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) has the Motorcycle Operator Manual available on-line. Did you know that? Have you reviewed it recently? It is rather basic and meant for new riders, but it is still worth reviewing on occasion. It can be found at https://driving-tests.org/maryland/maryland-motorcycle-manual/. Try the quiz questions and test your knowledge. MD MVA has approved training centers at All American Harley-Davidson in Hughesville (Basic Riders Course - BRC), the College of Southern Maryland (La Plata) has the BRC II (formerly experienced rider course) and the Safety Zone Riding School in Lexington Park, MD (BRC II coming soon). The Advanced Rider Course (ARC) is available through the Wor-Wic Community College in Salisbury, MD. Registration can be found at http://www.worwic.edu/academics/continuingeducation/motorcyclesafety/advancedri der.aspx. Hagerstown Community College has a ProRider Advanced Motorcycle Handling course (similar to Ride Like A Pro ). Links to schedule training are at http://www.mva.maryland.gov/safety/motorcycle/training/register.htm. Of course, there is a fee for these courses. Maryland has a motorcyclist safety page at http://www.mva.maryland.gov/safety/motorcycle/ with some motorist awareness in the mix in. A subpage, with more links is available at http://www.mva.maryland.gov/safety/motorcycle/motorcycle-safety.htm. The current Maryland motorcycle laws (as of April 2015) requires an approved helmet, eye protection and turn signals (electric signal lamps not required, use hands). That s it. All the gear is needed for all the training courses. It s a good idea to ATGATT (All the gear, all the time). Just yesterday I witnessed a car/motorcycle accident in stop/go traffic out of gate 3 of PAX. A small SUV wasn t paying attention and rear ended the mid-size BMW motorcycle in front of him. The rider was thrown off and landed on his feet running. I am certain the motorcycle was damaged, even in slow traffic. Hopefully the rider did not have physical injuries when he was thrown off the motorcycle. Legs and feet could collide with handle bars in this kind of accident. Ride safe. Until next time, keep on surfing! Tony Fontaine
