During spring break, St. Thomas More Students, along with students from St. John Paul II and St. Mary s Sexsmith, travelled to Europe. We started our travels in Florence, Italy, the birthplace of the Renaissance where we learned about the Machiavelli and Medici families, and the artwork of Michelangelo. The Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi did not disappoint. The first line of the Peace Prayer of St. Francis, Lord, make me an instrument of your peace sums up the tranquility and reverence that was felt during our visit. The basilica, one of the oldest existing Gothic churches in Italy, sits on a slope of Mount Subasio, and has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. St. Francis of Assisi is the patron saint of animals, merchants and ecology. We would then board a Ferry and travel across the Adriatic Sea (part of the Mediterranean Sea) to Croatia. A stop in the city, Mostar, located in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where the reconstructed Old Bridge and Old City of Mostar [proved to be] a symbol of reconciliation, international co-operation and of the coexistence of diverse cultural, ethnic and religious communities *. A highlight for our travel group was watching as a diver jumped 27 meters from the bridge into the cold Neretva River. It is a centuries-old tradition for international competitors to dive into the 3 meter deep water during the summer. We prayed together as we hiked Apparition Hill, a hill in Medjugoje, Bosnia where it it is said the Virgin Mary appears each month. Following the hike, we participated in mass. On our way to Dubrovnik, we stopped to eat and take in the sites of the Great Wall of Europe. As we walked along the stone walls, the medieval beauty of Dubrovnik Old Town easily became one of our favorite stops on the trip. The cherry on top of the one-of-a-kind trip, was a day spent in Rome. We made our way to explore the Vatican and participate in mass at St. Peter s Basilica. We explored the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps. Even though Pope Francis was in Morocco during our time at the Vatican, we are reminded of his words, Catholic education gives soul to our globalized world and radiates the promise of Christian salvation. * I am forever thankful for the opportunity to grow up in and to continue to be part of Catholic Education. For this reason, I will be participating in the GrACE Consultation and I hope that you will join me. On April 24 at 7 P.M. in the St. Thomas More Learning Commons we will actively engage in a process to advocate for Catholic Education.
