Our partner institution Qouta International Cebu a Women s led Civic Organization, initiated the Hand in Hand Project primarily to intended for the disadvantaged children and women in the island of Cebu through provision of educational needs for the children enrolled in specific Day Care Centers (Public Kindergarten) in Cebu City and Cordova as well as skills training and livelihood assistance to young mothers and deaf/hard in hearing youth (people with disabilities). The project aims to support facilities that need improvement, nutrition and wellness of children and youth as well as skills and livelihood development. ACTIVITIES: With the support and assistance of local volunteers, community residents and international volunteers will have the activities such as: 1. Help in the renovation of the classroom/facility like repainting and beautification 2. Assist in the provision of nutrition, health care and wellness to local children and youth 3. Undertake environmental related activities like coastal clean-up, tree planting, advocacy, etc. 4. Interact with the local children and youth through art, sports and team building activities 5. Exchange of culture through music, games, food, language, etc. HOSTING: The international participants will be accommodated at a local community facility in the project site with basic facilities. Personal sleeping bags or mats are needed. Filipino food will be served with the local community and International volunteers are encouraged to assist in the preparations to be familiarized with the traditional Filipino way of preparing and cooking food and serve themselves at mealtime. LOCATION: Barangay San Jose and Sawang Calero are among the poorest and most populous urban communities in Cebu City. Cebu City is the second biggest city in the Philippines that is rich in cultural and heritage sites. Gilutungan Island is a tiny but populous island and among the most disadvantaged island in the town of Cordova, Cebu. The island is rich in marine and natural resources but suffers with very limited electricity and water supply. LEISURE TIME: Cebu City is known as The Queen City of the South having a very rich cultural heritage. It is among the center of Catholic Religion that draws millions of Filipinos flocking the City during the month of January to celebrate the Feast of Senior Sto. The two projects are inspired to promote learning English language in a fun and non-formal way, showcase the Silliman University festival to promote preservation of history and culture as well as the organization of local youth camp for Negors Oriental youth. Philippines is regarded as one of the English speaking countries in Asia. With a number of English language schools established in the country catered for mostly South Korean and Japan nationals, GIED see it fitting to introduce a language camp in a local community setting at the most practical way with the most friendly and hospitable Filipino people. The DepEd will co-organize this project to promote the school s social development effort through special English language sessions with the volunteers to hone their knowledge and skills in English language proficiency, experience of Silliman University Festival which is the most awaited and popular event in the province as well as the organization of youth camp for the youth of Negros Oriental. ACTIVITIES: With the support and assistance of the Department of Education- Negros Island Region and the Provincial Local Government of Negros Oriental, local community and volunteers will have the activities such as: 1. Learn English language with the local community 2. Organization of youth camp for the Negros Oriental youth 3. Experience rich cultural festival 4. Exchange of culture through music, sports/games, food, language, etc 5. Interact with the local children and youth through art, sports and team building activities HOSTING: The international participants will be accommodated at a dormitory facility of DepEd in Dumaguete City. Personal sleeping bag is needed. Filipino food will be prepared by a local cook and International volunteers are encouraged to assist in the preparations to know about Filipino way of preparing and cooking food. LOCATION: Dumaguete City is the capital city of Negros Oriental province in the Negros Island Region. Dumaguete is referred to as a university town because of the presence of four universities and home to the best known Silliman University, the country's first Protestant university and the first American university in Asia. LEISURE TIME: Negros Island is rich in natural sea and land natural resources. During leisure time, volunteers can choose to visit various cultural and heritage sites like Silliman University the first Protestant American University in the Philippines, Old churches and local heritage sites in the city.
