Assembly Instructions - Please read these instructions once completely before beginning with the individual steps. General Note Required Experience for the construction of gabions have to be the following conditions: safe handling of tools and machines as well as with ladder and scaffold Knowledge in the field of accident prevention, work safety and operational safety Experience in the field of transportation and use with heavy and bulky components If the above mentioned required experience is non-existent or in case of uncertainty, please contact an expert or instruct a specialist company. Safety Rules Set up gabions only on a load-bearing, level surface in accordance with the assembly instruction Protective equipment such as protective gloves and safety boots must be worn during all work CAUTION! Wire could be sharp and sharp-edged! CAUTION! Risk of falling during work. Risks have to be assessed and corresponding protections to be taken. - PORTABLE stone basket 1
1. Lay the bottom, side, front and back grid in a star shape and hang the floor in the side, front and rear grids. Bend at least three hooks - left, center, right - per side with the pliers. 2. Fold up side-, front- and back grid and hook them. Bend at least three hooks - up, center, down - per side with the pliers 3. Hang the staying rods in the exact hanging positions and bend them with the pliers Example: Basket 100x100x100cm back grid Front grid - PORTABLE stone basket 2
ATTENTION: Applies to all basket sizes! The staying rods which connect the two side grids are hooked over the cross point according to the following detail drawing. The staying rods which connect the front grid with the back grid are also hooked over the cross point according to the following detail drawing. It is advisable to install the stayings rods (which connect front grid with back grid) above the staying rods of the sides grids. Basket: 100x50x100cm - PORTABLE stone basket 3
Basket: 100x50x50cm Basket: 50x50x50cm 4. Fill the basket or baskets up to a level of about 30 35 cm and then compress by shaking. The baskets are only stable when compressed. CAUTION! All basket sizes must be shaken so that they are well compressed, otherwise the filling material could settle either during transportation or later when they are installed. In turn, this could lead to structural stability problems. The settling can be so great that the basket is no longer completely filled. - PORTABLE stone basket 4
CAUTION! The stone material must be frost and weather resistant, sufficiently pressure resistant, as well as resistant to the exposure to de-icing salt. 5. The next layer of stones is filled in the same manner and then compressed by shaking. 6. In the case of the upper layer of stones, steps must be taken to ensure that the stones are filled precisely to the upper horizontal edges and that there are no hollow spaces between the filling and the lid. If there are hollow spaces or cavities, the load of the basket on top will not be transferred in a force-locking manner via the stone filling, but will put pressure on the wire basket below causing deformation. This too can lead to structural stability problems. 7. Put the cover grid on top and secure it with means of clamps to front, side and back grids. This means that the cover is secured and cannot move. 8. The - portable stone baskets may only be transported using the special carrying brackets and with suitable lifting equipment or on a pallet with a fork-lift truck. The lifting equipment must be designed so that the lifting forces are directed vertically into the carrying brackets. Also, the lifting equipment should be adapted to the round shape of the carrying brackets. Lifting equipment, such as chains or ropes, that exert an inclined load on the carrying brackets may not be used. There is a risk here that the portable stone baskets will become deformed, thereby compromising the structural stability. Also, the tensile forces on the carrying straps are increased and may cause the brackets to break in the worst case scenario. CAUTION - IMPORTANT: The portable stone basket are designed for transport at the manufacturer site and at the construction site. When transporting by helicopter or crane above people or valuable objects, an additional transport safety device has to be used, e.g. such a fuse with heavy duty belts. - PORTABLE stone basket 5
9. For a vertical construction: A compensating layer of smaller stones in suitable grain-size (e.g.16-32mm) must be applied on the entire surface on top of the already placed -portable stone baskets (horizontal construction) in order to compensate for settlement of the fill materials. This has to be done to guarantee continious load transmission. 10. After the portable stone baskets are in their final position, the carrying brackets can be simply bent over or cut off. 11. Basket dimensions The dimensions of the basket system allow walls to be constructed in grids of the nominal dimensions of the baskets. This is why the individual stone baskets are slightly smaller and narrower than the respective nominal dimensions. The minus tolerances are the result of deviations in the baskets from the ideal shape, vertical joints during positioning, stones protruding through the baskets and horizontal compensation layers.
