Many thanks are in ordertojerryreidforhiseffortsinsteeringthepaperworkforusthrough thisprocess. At our last meeting Gunther reported that we were now up to 85 members which represents 7 new members from the start of the year. We also seem to be running at between 58 60% in attendance which is excellent. We recently tried the Halton Resources Fair in a bid to attract new members. The results were disappointing but did serve to emphasize thatourmostsuccessfulrecruitingcomesfrompersonalrecommendations.i encourage you to keep up the great efforts of encouraging friends and acquaintancesofyourstocometoameetingandseehowmuchfunwehave. We need more members like the excellent ones we have had join us this year. Talkingaboutmembers,itisthattimeoftheyearwhenweaskyouto promptlypaytheannualduesassoonaspossiblebutnolaterthanaugust 1st. Where else can you get such great value in fellowship, intellectual stimulationandfunfor$45? I am also pleased to report that the Nomination Committee has pretty well completed its work for the year. The last 2 months around the club have not been just administrative. We had a trip to Silfab, a solar panel manufacturerandoneofmcguinty'sgreeninitiativeswhichwasveryinteresting.inmaywewentonabehindthe scenes tour of Pearson Airport. The guide was at pains to explain why we have to pay a $25 transit fee to go through the airport. The explanation was the $4B cost of the airport which was on display for us with all it's sophisticationandtechnicalwizardry.bothtripswerewellworthgoingon.theyarereportedinmoredetaillaterin theletter. August21 BradMelle Curator,ChiefswoodNationalHistoricSite I normally speak about the history of the Six Nations people (Iroquois), how they arrived in Ontario following the events of the American Revolution, and their relationship with the settler world. More specifically I focus on the family of Chief George H.M. Johnson, whose family inhabited the Chiefswood estate (where our museum is located) and the life of his youngest daughter, E. Pauline Johnson, the famous Canadian poet and performer. The Johnson family was unique in that they occupied a high place in society despite the fact that Chief Johnson (a Mohawk man) was married to an Englishwoman named Emily Howells. Their children, particularly their youngest daughter, Pauline, straddled two cultural worlds, making for a unique and distinctly Canadian upbringing. Humour of the Day A Scotsman and his wife walked past a swanky new restaurant. "Did you smell that food?" she asked. "Incredible!" Page3of6TheProbusClubofOakville JohnSmithintroducedGabrielleWills, our speaker at the April meeting. She has written five novels and is working on a sixth based on Muskoka. Her slide presentation described the initial development of the resort area with mansions rather than cottages, many built by wealthy Americans from Pittsburgh and other parts of Pennsylvania and New York State during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. The elegantly dressed ladies lounging on their verandas sipping afternoon tea or perhaps something stronger was reminiscent of the opening episodes of Downton Abbey while the four steamships that served the lake brought back memories of Stephen Leacock s Sunshine Sketches Of An Ontario Town. Only one of these survived and most of the cottages were destroyed by fire or developers. Land was cheap then and Eaton s featured prebuilt cottages in its catalogue. Pianos, the favourite means of entertainment, were also in the catalogue at $45 each. But then her presentation proceeded to World War 1 in which 68,000 Canadians were killed and over 120,000 wounded and 2,000 nursing volunteers served; the ensuing flu epidemic killed another 50,000 out of a population very much smaller than today. She followed that period with what was essentially a social history of Canada which many of us could relate to and, as we all know, fancy mansions known as cottages are still being built in Muskoka. Gerry Sutton OurAprilSpeaker OurAprilProfiler Our profiler this month was Bob Cumming, a new member to our club. He was born in Toronto, moving at an early age to Leaside. His mother was one of Canada s top fashion models and his dad, a graduate of King s College in Nova Scotia, a buyer with the T.Eaton Company. Bob is a graduate of the University of Toronto. He was a teacher and major department head of Physical and Health Education before being promoted to positions of administration at the secondary school level for most of his thirty-three year career. He has been very happily married for forty- eight years to his wife, Karin Lynn, who he met on a blind date. At that time she was a young nurse in training. They have three lovely children, all married, and seven grandchildren. They all live in Oakville and are very much a part of their lives. Bob is an excellent public speaker. He related some amazing anecdotes from his very diversified and rewarding career. Above all, Bob has to be proud of the many and varied accolades that have been bestowed upon him in the past and the present by former students, staff and the community at large. OurMaySpeaker OurMayspeaker,BarryGordonofMaxSold, has been a Realtor since 1978 and an Auctioneer/Appraiser since 76. Barry has become a leader in the field of seniors downsizing and estate transition. After an active question and answer session, Barry was thanked for his presentation by club member Sid Hibbard. John Bartrem OurMayProfiler Our May profiler was Stewart Bryan. Stewart, a Toronto native, joined printers Rolph-Clarke-Stone in 1959 which started him on a 30 year career in the business. The company in time became BCE Publitech and then Quebecor at which time he was Corporate Secretary, Director of Risk Management and Human Resources. In 1989 Stewart joined Exide Technologies as Director of Human Resources and was part of management there until he retired in 2004.

Helmut Erxleben The 100 year Old Man Who Climbed Out The Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson. It is a departure from the serious stuff I usually read, but it was a fun, feel-good kind of book which was easy to read on the flight back from Portugal. It begins with Allan Karlsson sneaking out of the retirement home he is living in just before the party they are giving to celebrate his One Hundredth birthday - which he wants absolutely nothing to do with. It is a bit of a madcap adventure involving crooks, thugs, a suitcase full of money and incompetent police. The story flows back and forth between his current life and his early years where he had been involved in bomb making during the Spanish Civil War, his meeting Franco and later becoming friends with American Presidents, Russian tyrants, Chinese and Korean leaders. The story tells of his involvement in many of the key events of the 20th century and celebrates the spirit of adventure with absurd humor. It was described by one European Newspaper as A Swedish black novel that reads like a road trip with Forrest Gump at the wheel. Well worth the time to read it. Mike Purcell TheGrandBudapestHotel.
