Notes from your Chapter Directors: Good day family & friends.. What beautiful, warm weather we have been having, yet a day or two we have some rain slip in. Our Chapter has had a few events, but most have been postponed due to rain or a couple of illnesses. Terry & Nancy Kalaher held their annual Potluck on April 2. There were 28 attending and we had so much delicious food and desserts to be shared, and had enough to feed an Army! We all needed a nap afterwards. Several members attended the Bike & Trike Courses in Vandalia on April 8 and 9th. Many new techniques were learned and as Rick stated, "there were a couple of bad habits that he needed to break". Larrie Wiggins put on a Motorcycle Awareness at Gillespie High School on April 12th. There were several riders from various Chapters attending as well as 4 from Chapter E. It was good to see all the students so interested in the class. There were many comments and much eagerness from the kids that hope to someday get a motorcycle and have some knowledge with being out on the roads. Our Chapter will again host a Yard Sale on Sat. Aug. 12th in Litchfield at Niehaus Cycle. If you have any items to donate (infant through adult clothing that is free from rips, holes, or stains, small appliances, toys, household items, office supplies, holiday decorations, and new or used items of any kind) please contact Rick/ Maggie Filson, Rick /Carol French or any Chapter E Staff member!! We want to thank all the visiting Chapters that attend our monthly gathering. It's always good to see you all. It's also always good to see all the members of Chapter E at the gathering and hope to see you again next month. Bring a friend or two.. Hopefully we see you all at Niehaus Days!!! Rick & Maggie Filson Chapter E Directors 217-899-7130 mineexam@royell.net Past events: March 26 th was the annual bike blessing and dedication at the biker memorial in South Roxana. There was a brick dedicated for Martha from our chapter and also a brick for Kimi of Chapter O. There were 650 bikes and approximately 1200 people in attendance including 12 from Chapter E.
April 1 st was the meet the chapters kick-off. It was held at Edinger s Filling Station restaurant in Pontiac. We had 6 from Chapter E there. The weather was good and the wind was not as bad like other years. Meet the chapter runs through the November meeting. There is no cost to participate. If you are interested, see Rick Filson. April 8 th chapter U hosted the GWRRA Advance Trike Rider Course in Vandalia. Several from the chapter were there. Steve said that he had 4 women riders taking the training. On the 9 th, it was the bikes turn. Again there were several from the chapter there sharpening their riding skills. April 8 th Ed and Sue went to the Annual Moonshine Lunch Run. Ed said that there were motorcycles parked on the side of the rode for more than a mile in all directions. The line of people for burgers was ½ a mile long. On that day, they sold 3363 burgers. We will do a chapter ride to Moonshine later in the year on a day that they are not so busy. Future events: May 18 th we will be setting up for Niehaus Days at 9 a.m. Anyone wanting to meet for breakfast, be at Huddle House at 7:30. May 19 th 21 st is Niehaus Days. We need lots of volunteers to help with selling food, raffle tickets, registration and bingo. Also we will need help with teardown on Sunday around 3:30. May 21 st just after teardown and the drawing for the new Goldwing, we will be heading over to Prairietown for the annual firemen s chicken dinner fundraiser. Keep your mind on the ride Have you ever ridden in traffic when a car in another lane suddenly veers into the space you're occupying? Our (relatively) tiny motorcycles can easily fit into blind spots. And we know that drivers are not psychologically programmed to see motorcycles, only cars. Add to these facts that most drivers would rather answer their phone calls or reply to a text instead of paying attention to the business of driving. It's no wonder that cars change lanes into us. How can we avoid this seemingly daily traffic occurrence? Be aware of where blind spots lie and spend as little time in them as possible. If you are passing, pass quickly. If you can see a driver's eyes in their mirrors, then they have the ability to see you also. But, remember that they still aren't always looking. Be aware of situations where lane changes become more frequent. Is highway traffic slowing, with one lane moving faster than others? People are going to want to be in that lane. Don't be where they want to be. Put as much space between you and other drivers as possible. Look for signs of a car changing lanes, such as turn signals, wheels turning, the car wandering around in its own lane while the driver checks his or her mirrors, and of course, the driver's head moving. Be aware of all that, in all the cars around you, at all times, and you will be okay. For an education of a car drifting into you in traffic, go to you.tube.com and google Close Call-Car pulls into Motorcycle's Lane. It's a 15 second video and will give you the feeling of being in trouble without actually experiencing it. Take care and stay safe, Nancy
