March Magic Workshop Descriptions Outdoor Courses Advanced Knife Skills Timeslot #3 Description: At the upper end of the progression scale of knife use, you ll find some of the fun things to do with a knife. As girls progress, they hone their skills as they whittle and carve. Make a Tiki, which gives you the right to carry a knife. Then try your hand at making a fuzz stick, or some other useful or fun item to take home. Please bring a sharp jackknife (with no more than 4-5 gadgets, but will need an awl for your Tiki) in good condition if you have access to one. Adult and Child CPR/AED/First Aid Timeslot #4 extended 9:30 3:00 Adults Only Description: Covers care for a variety of first aid, breathing, and cardiac emergencies involving adults, children and infants and meets Girl Scout/OSHA/workplace requirements. Upon successful completion of this course you will receive a digital certificate for Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED valid for two years. Dress comfortably as skills are performed on the floor, and bring bag lunch. Cost is $75 and can be paid to the instructor by cash or check the day of the course. Adult and Child CPR/AED/First Aid RECERTIFICATION extended 3:15 5:15 Adults Only Description: This course will recertify those who previously have been certified by any of the parent companies accepted by Girl Scouts for certification. Dress comfortably as skills are performed on the floor, and bring bag lunch. Cost is $75 and can be paid to the instructor by cash or check the day of the course. Arts & Crafts from Leftovers & Throwaways Timeslot #4 Description: If you ve been a leader for a while you probably have lots of leftover materials just taking up space. Maybe you just have a source for some materials that you could reuse and repurpose. Things like crayon bits and wax paper, tin cans and nails, toilet paper tubes, egg cartons, milk cartons and Orangina bottles, or maybe wax, can be used for all kinds of fun crafts. Come learn to turn your leftovers into crafts for your girls. Basic 8 Outdoor Skills Bracelet Program Timeslot #1 Description: The basic 8 is a traditional way of teaching girls outdoor skills, including outdoor manners, dressing for the outdoors, simple knot tying, knife use, fire building, outdoor cooking, simple 1 st aid, and minimal impact/leave no trace. Although this format is not widely used today, there is a fun program where by girls earn a different bead for a skills bracelet by learning that skill. Learn about the program, how to adapt to your girls experience level, and how to expand for progressive skills and beads within skill areas. Actual skills will not be taught in detail so sign up for skill workshops you need. Basics of Fire Building Timeslot #3 Description: Learn about fire safety with girls of all ages. Get hands-on experience with how to choose a fire site, starting a fire and keep it going, different types of fires and what they are used for, how to extinguish your fire. This is a good refresher or to be prepared for an upcoming cookout, campout, or a cookout/campout class. Box Oven Cooking Timeslot #1 Description: Cooking in a box oven is a long time Girl Scout favorite outdoor cooking method. Who would believe you can cook just about anything in a cardboard box! As a matter of fact, just about anything that can be cooked in a regular oven can be cooked in a box oven. Learn more about them, safety in using them, how to cook different meals in them, and try your hand at one.
Camp Potomac Woods History Hike Timeslot #1 Description: Take a hike around camp and learn about the history of the land before and after it became a Girl Scout camp. Find out about the colonial-era land barons who owned this property in the 1700 s, how many ferries crossed the river close to the camp, where the Native American fish weir can still be seen, how old the Pooh Tree is, and more. Wear proper walking shoes. Cooking for Large Events Timeslot #4 extended + additional time before or after a meal Description: Many teen troops provide the meals for SU encampments and other large events as money raising activities. In this unique workshop you will work with the March Magic cook during some meals to learn how they do it, help close the kitchen after Sunday breakfast, and then have a classroom portion after the kitchen is closed. Please bring a bag lunch. Crazy Cooking Timeslot #1 Description: This is full of all kinds of non-traditional crazy cooking methods that your girls will just love trying. Some of the unique cooking equipment and methods you will use include flowerpots, tin cans, pie irons, and other unheard of things. Your girls will have a hard time choosing what crazy way they will want to try first. Eating in the Backcountry Timeslot #1 Description: Whether on an all day hike, or backpacking or primitive camping for a couple days, your meals will be different from a troop camping trip. Learn about different preparation and cooking methods, and the different types of foods used in the backcountry, and why they fit so well into these backcountry camping conditions. Exploring the GSCNC Equipment Center Timeslot #2 Description: GSCNC Equipment Center (formally known as Dorr Ave) is a great troop resource for activity materials and program kits focusing on different topics, outdoor gear, flags, and much more. Learn what is available, the reservation and rental process (many items are free but some have a minimal cost), and pickup and return procedures. Check out this great resource to help you provide program to your girls. Fun Things to Do While Hiking Timeslot #3 Description: It's not always the destination but the journey that's often the fun part. Learn fun things to do on hikes with your troop at camp or anywhere. Learn different types of hikes, things to do on hikes, and things to look for and point out. You should already know hiking basics and how to safely hike in the woods. Wear closed toe, heeled comfortable walking shoes, dress for the weather in layers, and bring water bottle. Fun Things to Do With Knots Timeslot #2 & #3 Description: Even beyond the normal things you use knots for, there are some fun things you can do with knots also. Come learn how to make a knot to use to carry a water bottle over your shoulder, a fun knot to tie a scarf with, and a set of knots to make an attractive extension for a jacket or other zipper. Learn these and maybe other unusual knots/creations to take back to your girls. Fun with Fire Timeslot #1 Description: In Girl Scouting we use fire for outdoor cooking and evening campfires and most are used to the typical fire starting ways. Come learn some not so typical, some pretty unique, and some outright weird, fire starting methods and materials. It may just not be for fun though, because it may be useful in emergency or survival situations too. OK, it may be fun for starting camp and other Girl Scout fires too!
Geocaching Timeslot #4 Description: Geocaching is an outdoor treasure hunting sport using a GPS-enabled device. Learn how to use your smart phone to navigate and find "geocaches". If you like a set program better, learn about vendors who supply everything, including actual GPS devices. Juniors have a Geocacher Badge, but learn how to take any age troop geocaching for some outdoor program. Some GSCNC camps even have their own hidden treasure boxes! Hike the Program Areas of Potomac Woods Timeslot #1 & #4 Description: Hike Camp Potomac Woods and discover our many program and activities areas. Some have their own activity materials and/or kits while others are just locations for any activity your troop chooses to bring along. Visit the Pooh Tree, Eco-Lab and Riverwalk, the fishing platform and shed, the open sports field and a couple of the great hiking trails throughout camp. This is meant to give you a physical overview of the camp and get your imagination flowing about which activities might be fun for your girls. Please wear hiking shoes and weather appropriate clothing and be ready to walk. Lashing: Outdoor Engineering Timeslot #2-3 combined Description: Teach your girls to lash and let them create fun and useful camp equipment. Learn to wrap and frap, and maybe try making a self-standing garbage bag holder or a camp table. Take these skills back to your girls and see if they can build a Chippewa Kitchen for a real unique camping experience. Outdoor Crafts Description: There are so many different types of crafts, many having an outdoor or nature theme, that are perfect to do at camp or to get the girls thinking and learning about the outdoors. Come learn and try your hand at some that have an outdoor or nature theme so you can then share them with your troop. Outdoor Games Description: Not only are these games well suited to be played in the outdoors, but many also have an outdoor or nature theme that are perfect to do at camp or to get the girls thinking and learning about the outdoors. Come learn and try some games that have an outdoor or nature theme so you can then share them with your troop. Outrageous Acts of Cooking Timeslot #4 Description: There are so many different methods of outdoor cooking, from the cast iron pieces the first settlers used (Dutch Ovens), to cardboard boxes transformed into ovens and made famous by Girl Scouts (Box Ovens). Or try hanging a chicken from a tripod over your coals, or food cooked in food. By today s standards these are pretty outrageous, but the girls just love them. Come check out some outrageous cooking and delicious meals as you attend for the 2 hour time slot, or stay longer for a more leisure meal and more informal learning. Pauline Bunyan Timeslot #1 Description: In the outdoors, you should learn to use a number of tools that have blades. Some workshops cover knives, and some saws, but no other teaches you to safely use axes and hatchets also. Here s your chance to learn to safely use them along with saws and knives. Then you will be able to split your wood and teach girls how to safely use all these specialty tools so the blades work for you and are not a danger to you or your girls.
Starting Girls off Right Using Knives Timeslot #2 Description: Progression and safety go hand in hand and are of the utmost importance when girls are starting to use knives. A mishap can happen quickly and easily so learn all you need to know about Girl Scout knife safety and how to teach girls knife skills progressively to decrease the chances of one. Please bring a sharp jackknife (with no more than 4 gadgets if possible) in good condition and a sharpening stone if you have access to one. Starting Your Girls Hiking Timeslot #2 Description: If you are just beginning hiking with your troop or group of girls, or want to, this will teach you the outdoor leadership aspects, as well as a few things to do on a hike. Learn to plan the hike in different localities/environments, what you need to bring for a safe time, and what to do if the girls get bored, restless or tired. Wear closed toe, heeled comfortable walking shoes, dress for the weather in layers, and bring water bottle. Survival Gimme Shelter Timeslot #3 Description: Shelter is very important in a survival situation and there are many ways to build an emergency shelter. They can be constructed from natural materials, shelter materials you have in your survival kit, or just misc. items you may have on hand or find to create something that could save your life. Come check out different shelter materials, different types of shelters, and how to construct them. Survival Light my Fire Timeslot #2 Description: A survival kit will always have something to start a fire as easily as possible, because your survival may depend on it. In this workshop you will look at and try different fire starting tools so you can decide what is best for you, as well as try different fire starting materials to see what works best. This will include homemade, commercially available, and natural materials. You may even make something to take with you to show your girls or friends. Participation Sessions Archery Timeslot #1, 2 & 3 Description: Spend a session on the archery range at Camp Potomac Woods and take your turn taking aim at the bulls-eye. Teen Courses ABC s the Gold Award Timeslot #1 Description: This workshop is an introduction to the Gold Award for those who are interested in learning how to earn the highest award in Girl Scouting. It will cover the pre-requisites, what are good project ideas and what are not permitted, and how to start, and what to include, in your project proposal to the panel. Cooking for Large Events Timeslot #4 extended + additional time before or after a meal Description: Many teen troops provide the meals for SU encampments and other large events as money raising activities. Developing a Gold Award Project & Proposal Timeslots #2-3 combined Description: Although this will include a brief review of the process, it will 1st focus on girls taking, or coming up with, an idea for a project and developing it into something worthy of the highest award in Girl Scouting. Second, it will help girls take their project idea and work through it to make sure all necessary details are thought of and included in the proposal so it is approved, as well as being a useful tool to help them implement the project. Girls should have, or are close to completing, their pre-req Journeys. From Idea/Interest to Viable Silver Project Timeslot #2 Description: Not sure what to do for your Silver Award project? Come learn how to focus in on a rough idea you may have to make it an acceptable project. Maybe you have an interest you re aware of, or maybe not aware of, that can direct you to a project. You will divide up into workgroups to start to formulate your project during the workshop also. Interviewing Skills Prepare for Life after High School Timeslot #2 Description: Whether you are preparing to apply for college or will be going straight into the work force, you will get the advantage if you have certain skills. Learn about the interview process, including what interviewers may ask and how best to respond. You will also get important tips, such as how to introduce yourself, shake hands, and how to dress for success that may just give you the upper hand over others. Program Aid Training (Open to Cadette girls only) Timeslot #4 extended / 9:45 2:15 Description: Girl Scouting builds leadership and one way you learn that is working with younger girls. This will help you become an effective leader by teaching you skills for working with and guiding younger girls. You will use Program Aide skills if you are helping at a day camp, a service unit event, a council event, with a troop, now as well as in your future. Please bring a bag lunch. Silver Award Workshop Timeslot #1 Description: Girls and leaders interested in the Silver Award should attend this workshop. Learn about the steps girls should go through to earn their Silver, the tools available to make sure their project meets the intent of the award, and how to complete the process so girls can receive their award. You can also get all your questions answered at once. Teen Programming at GSCNC Timeslot #2 Description: Meet the new Teen Specialist and receive an overview of what s available for teens in our Council. This includes both national and Council awards and recognitions, as well as unique programs teens can take advantage of in our area. Where Do I Get Those Silver Trefoil Hours Timeslot #3 Description: Girl Scouts always give service but the different type hours required for the Silver Trefoil Award can be hard to find, unless you know where to look. Learn about the requirements, the paperwork, and where you might be able to find some of those type hours that are harder to find in your area. Bring and share your own ideas on resources for hours also.
