Slabside Days Open House, third Saturday in May and first Saturday in October, noon-4:30 p.m. Esopus Meadows Lighthouse River Road, Ulster Park 845 848-3669; www.esopusmeadowslighthouse.org Built in 1871, this is the last wooden lighthouse on the Hudson River. The tower light is an official U.S. Coast Guard navigational aid and has recently been fully restored. Tours held June-Oct. 5 6 7 8 Hudson River Maritime Museum Klyne Esopus Museum 764 Broadway (Route 9W), Ulster Park 845 338-8109; www.klyneesopusmuseum.us Housed in a former Dutch country church built in 1827 featuring exhibits about the culture, commerce and history of the Town of Esopus. Johnston Museum/ Friends of Historic Kingston Gallery 63 Main St. (Corner of Main and Wall Streets), Kingston 845 339-0720; www.fohk.org The museum is a circa 1812 Federal style house featuring 18th and early 19th century furnishings and decorative arts in eight elegant room settings. The Gallery hosts exhibits relating to local history and heritage and includes a gift shop with regional books and gifts. The museum is open for guided tours (for a fee), May-Oct, Fri-Sat, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. and by appointment. The gallery is open the same hours as the museum and admission is free. Hudson River Maritime Museum 50 Rondout Landing, Kingston 845 338-0071; www.hrmm.org Located on the Rondout Creek in the historic waterfront district, this museum explores Hudson River history by following the river through time. Exhibits, permanent collection, educational and visiting vessels programs, events courtyard, lecture series, gift shop and docking. Open May-Oct, daily, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Old Dutch Reformed Church 272 Wall St., Kingston 845 338-6759; www.olddutchchurch.org Organized as a congregation in 1659, it is Kingston s oldest institution. The churchyard contains numerous, beautifully carved early Dutch gravestones and the grave site of George Clinton, New York State s first governor. Open for self-guided tours year-round, Mon-Fri, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. 9 10 11 12 13 Rondout Lighthouse Rondout Creek, Kingston 845 334-3955; www.kingston-ny.gov This restored 1913 lighthouse holds period furnishings and exhibits documenting the history of the Rondout Lighthouse keepers. Museum features art, objects and documents of the 17th-19th centuries. Park-like setting, perfect for a picnic. Open April 15-Oct 31, Wed-Sat,10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sun, 1 p.m.-5 p.m. Site also open Memorial, Independence and Labor Day holidays. The Matthewis Persen House 74 John St., (corner of John & Crown streets), Kingston 845 340-3040; www.co.ulster.ny.us/archives Located within Kingston s Stockade National Historic District, this house has a long, colorful past; the house s earliest portions date from 1661. The corner of John and Crown Streets is the only intersection in the U.S. with 18th century stone houses on all four corners. Trolley Museum of New York 89 East Strand, Kingston 845 331-3399; www.tmny.org Trolley rides on original tracks along the historic Kingston waterfront to Kingston Point Park on the Hudson River. Open Memorial Day-Columbus Day, weekends and holidays, noon-5 p.m. Last ride at 4:15 p.m. Volunteer Firemen s Hall and Museum 265 Fair St., Kingston 845 331-0866 A Little Gem of a Museum housed in the 1857 Wiltwyck Fire House, displaying many firemanic artifacts, equipment and memorabilia. Open May, Sept-Oct, Fri-Sat, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.; June-Aug, Wed-Fri, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.; Sat, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Annual Antique Fire Engine Muster takes place each August from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Call for date.

Call for details. 18 19 20 Rondout Valley Region Nestled between the Catskill and Shawangunk mountains, the Rondout Valley remains a showcase for the county s agrarian past. The sites along this farm dotted landscape tell the story of the area s early settlement period, its transition to an agricultural center, its commercial expansion during the D & H Canal era and its ultimate evolution during the railroad era as a prime tourism destination. 25 26 27 Catskill Region Byrdcliffe Theatre In Ulster County, the Catskill Park stretches from near the Hudson River just west of the city of Kingston in the east and continues north to Saugerties, and to the west through Woodstock and on to Highmount. The Catskills wild forests, waterfalls and mountains have inspired generations of painters, poets and storytellers, and attract generations of people all over the world. Come explore their history at these stops. Greenfield Park Schoolhouse/Museum Route 52 West, Greenfield Park 845 647-6560 Six miles west of Ellenville on Route 52, left onto Oakridge Road. Across from the Museum is the old Quaker Meeting House. Open Thurs-Sun, July-Sept. By appointment only, must call ahead. Town of Shandaken Historical Museum 26 Academy St., Pine Hill 845 254-4460; www.shandaken.us A 1920 s schoolhouse in historic Pine Hill with many and varied displays of historical tools and artifacts from the 1800s on including a 1900 s schoolroom and kitchen, displays on the people and history of the 12 hamlets of Shandaken, a library of books on the Catskills, genealogy files and wireless internet. Byrdcliffe Art Colony Upper Byrdcliffe Road, Woodstock, 845 679-2079; www.byrdcliffe.org America s oldest continuing Arts and Crafts colony on 300 wooded acres with 30 unique, picturesque buildings. Listed on National Register of Historic Places. Home to Byrdcliffe s Artist in Residence Program. Classes in ceramics, jewelry making and woodworking instruction available. Free walking tours. Open May-Oct. 28 29 30 31 Historic Huguenot Street Wallkill Valley Region Filled with farms, orchards and wineries and ringed by the Shawangunk Mountains, this Valley welcomed religious refugees and was once the center of the natural cement industry that helped create some of the most iconic structures in the world. Historic Huguenot Street: Where family is the story 88 Huguenot St., New Paltz 845 255-1660, 845 255-1889 (Dubois Fort); www.huguenotstreet.org National Historic Landmark District includes visitors center, seven original 18th century stone houses, reconstructed 1717 French church, burial ground, special exhibits and galleries research library, archives and ten landscaped acres that tell the story of French-speaking Protestants seeking refuge. Tours and special programs offered. Open beginning the third weekend in May, Sat-Sun, 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and Memorial Day; June-Oct, 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Closed Tues-Wed; Nov-April the site is closed for regular tours but please see our calendar of events for special programs. Locust Lawn 400 Rt. 32 South, New Paltz 845 454-4500 x 211; www.lgny.org Locust Lawn includes the Josiah Hasbrouck House, an elegant Federal-style mansion, and the Evert Terwilliger House, a 1738 Dutch-style stone house. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Both houses are preserved as museums. Tours available by appointment only. Perrine s Bridge Junction of Route 32 and Route 213, Rifton 845 338-8109 Covered bridge built around 1844 by Benjamin Wood. The last surviving example of the Burr arch truss design in New York State. Spans the Wallkill River between the Town of Esopus and the Town of Rosendale. Listed on National Register of Historic Places. The A.J. Snyder Estate/Century House Historical Society 668 Rt. 213, Rosendale 845 658-9900; www.centuryhouse.org Rosendale Natural Cement Historic District, listed on the State and National Register of Historic Places. Tour Widow Jane Mine, cement kilns, D&H Canal, Snyder Canal Slip, exhibition hall and the Snyder Carriage and Sleigh collection. Picnic area. Special events.
