35 th Annual TESOL-SPAIN Convention March 9 th -11 th 2012 Convention Preprogramme TESOL- Spain welcomes you to our 35 th Annual Convention, to be held in Bilbao. Deusto University provides the ideal setting. theme, Plurilingualism: Promoting Co- operation between Communities and Nations, emphasises that plurilingualism not only implies a deliberate development of linguistic awareness and skill, but also of the personal and intercultural competences that will help individuals cope successfully with the new challenges present in our culturally diverse society and ever- changing world for convention. emphasizes that learning a language is more than the study of linguistic forms in a classroom setting and suggests that taking a plurilinguistic approach to language learning is beneficial for all. The Convention offers participants a wide range of presentations by national and international speakers, including plenary and keynote presentations, workshops, round tables and product presentations. There will be over 100 presentations on a wide variety of topics during the two and a half days. There will also be an exhibition area where you can view the poster presentations, browse through the latest publications, try out multi- media 2

materials, find out what is on offer from examining boards and learn about other teacher associations and professional development courses at home and abroad. There will also be a Jobs Board, a Materials Swap Shop, plus opportunities for socializing, not only during the Convention, but also at the Opening Cocktail on Friday and the Convention Dinner on Saturday, New this year, the conference papers will be published by TESOL- SPAIN on a pen drive. In addition, TESOL- SPAIN together with Deusto University, will organize the edition of a special volume of selected papers. This pre- programme publication is intended to give you a taste of what is to come, to guide you through what you need to do to participate, and to make the most of what is on offer. Although there are still bits to be tightened up and some details are subject to change, we hope it serves this purpose and that you find the coming convention an event worthy of your support. Please visit http://www.tesol.org// for up- to- date information. 3

CONVENTION LOCATION The Bilbao campus is located at the Avenida de las Universidades, between two landmark buildings, the Guggenheim Museum and the Euskalduna Congress and Concert Hall. You can choose how to get there: on foot, by bike, underground, tram, bus, or in your own car. There are several bridges which link the University and Bilbao city centre. The most frequently used by students is the Father Arrupe Footbridge, which links the main building and the new Library - LRC at the University. Another bridge that gives access to the Bilbao city centre is the Deusto Bridge. 4

If you come from the Old Quarter (Casco Viejo), you can have a nice stroll by the Nervion River along La Ribera Street and the Paseo de Campo de Volantín Walk. To come to the University by underground, you can get off at Deusto or Moyua underground stations, both less than a ten- minute walk from the campus. The Guggenheim tram stop on Line A will leave you opposite the Father Arrupe footbridge. Or if you prefer the train, you can take EuskoTren, Line 4, and get off at the Unibertsitatea stop. In addition, several city and inter- city buses have stops near the campus. 5

ARRIVING IN BILBAO BY BUS TERMIBUS, next to the station San Mamés. TERMIBUS can be accessed from the San Mamés Bilbao underground station, Bilbao tramway and Renfe short distance lines. For more information http://www.termibus.es 6

BY TRAIN For information on destinations to and from Bilbao and timetables, please call Renfe's Customer Service phone number (902 240 202) or visit www.renfe.com BY ROAD BY AIR Bilbao Airport lies 12 kilometres away from the city, in the Loiu district. The Vizcayan capital and its airport are linked by highway, which makes the journey quick and easy. The airlines operating in Bilbao are Aer Lingus, Air Berlin, Air Europa, Air France, Alitalia, EasyJet, Hapag- Lloyd Express, Iberia, Lufthansa, PGA Portugalia Airlines, SN Brussels Airlines, Spanair, and Vueling. 7

TO MOVE AROUND BILBAO BY UNDERGROUND The Metro Bilbao was officially opened in 1995 and was designed by Sir Norman Foster (Manchester, 1935), one of the most innovative and important architects of our times. His individual style has given the city fosteritos which are the entrances to the various stations and are always made of glass and steel. Likewise, the inside of the metro was designed to ensure the stations were as close as possible to the surface, offering open spaces with great visibility provided by natural light. For further information, www.metrobilbao.net BY TRAMWAY The first tramway, the Bilbao - Las Arenas line, appeared in Vizcaya in 1872, but shortly afterwards, in 1876, it was followed by the left- bank stretch, the Bilbao - Santurtzi line. It is this line that became the first Spanish electrical stretch one that we can see today: the cleanest, most silent, environmentally- friendly and efficient means of transport. By 1920, Bilbao's tramway network stretched over 109 km, with Arenal as the hub of the 12 existing lines. Subsequent crises, however, led to the disappearance of the tram in 1964, replaced by the more modern trolleybus or electric bus. In late 2002, almost four decades after the last tram travelled along Bilbao's streets and after three years of remodelling works, the legendary bell began to ring again, bringing the village back into the era of modern, sustainable and environment- friendly public transportation. 8

The line has been gradually extended to cover an area linking Atxuri to Basurto, with a central stretch across the Abandoibarra district - the new leisure area in the village - and stops at some of Bilbao's architectural landmarks, such as the Arriaga Theatre, the Guggenheim Museum, the Euskalduna Palace or the San Mamés Football Stadium. For further information, http://www.euskotren.es/es/tranviabilbao OTHER MEANS OF TRANSPORT You can also move around Bilbao by bus, taxi, the Artxanda Funicular Railway, Bizkaibus, Euskotren, Renfe, FEVE, bicycle or on foot.
