5 THE BALEARICS: A PARADISE OF UNSPOILED NATURAL LANDSCAPE All year round Not only do the Balearcs offer actvtes for vstors all the year round but those who are nterested n the natural landscape and ts assocated plants, flowers and wldlfe wll not be dsapponted n any of the seasons of the year. Probably two of the landmarks most sought after by nature lovers are the S Albufera Natonal Park and the S Albufereta Nature Reserve, both n the north of the Island. Others of sgnfcance are the marne and land-based natonal park of the sland of Cabrera and the nature parks of the sland of Sa Dragonera off the Andratx coast, of Mondrago n Santany n the east, and of Llevant n the north-eastern area of Mallorca. There s of course also the World Hertage Ste of the Tramuntana mountans. In Menorca, the outstandng ste s the Albufera des Grau and n Ibza, vstors are drawn to the nature reserves of Es Vedra and Es Vedranell and the Ponent slets. Ses Salnes Nature Reserve les between the slands of Ibza and Formentera. In Ibza, vsts to Cap des Falco and Es Amunts are recommended, whle n Formentera, there are the Estany des Pex and Estany Pudent, two wetlands n the Ses Salnes of Ibza and Formentera Nature Park. One of the partcular attractons of the Balearcs for those lookng to fnd an experence beyond the beach holday s the enormous varety of landscape. The slanders are very aware of ths natural beauty and have gone to great lengths to protect these spaces from napproprate use and development. The Balearc archpelago s stuated along the western European mgratory route, makng the slands the perfect spot for brdwatchng. Mountans, the marne envronment, natural wetlands and salt flats go to make up a welcomng landscape for speces such as the peregrne falcon and the black vulture. Strenuous attempts have been made n the Balearcs to conserve the last sland communty of black vultures n the world. Brdwatchers can also have sght of to see Egyptan vultures, royal fnch, common stork and Balearc shearwater. Mallorca s not short of places for gettng good sghtngs of both mgratory and natve speces. These nclude the nature park of S Albufera n Alcuda, the nature reserve of Mondrago on the east coast of the sland, the Tramuntana mountans n the west, the Parc del Cam des Cngles dstngushed by ts craggy landscape - n Soller, and the small urban nature reserve of La Gola n Pollença. Not to be outdone, meanwhle, Menorca has ts own brdwatchers paradse to offer. Destnatons whch are a must to vst are the s Albufera des Grau natonal park, the extensve natural wetlands known as the Lake of Morella, the wld, juttng headland of Favartx wth ts famous lghthouse and the Addaa salt flats. All these wld and unspolted stes are a haven not just for brds but for those who want to observe them.

They have legal protecton, so please don t pck them. They can be found n felds, n woods, on verges, n wetlands, such as Albufera near Alcuda n the north of Mallorca. FORMENTERA Save the posdona project: Underwater prares of rare marne grass The occason of the Internatonal Year for Sustanable Toursm s a tmely opportunty to present a new project that ams to promote respect for the natural envronment of the Balearcs. The Save the Posdona project ams to make vstors and resdents alke aware of the fraglty of a type of marne grass whch carpets the sea bed n shallow waters around Formentera. Clamed to be the oldest and largest lvng organsm n the world, the so-called prares of Posdona grass are sad to stretch for 8 klometres and are beleved by naturalsts to have been n Balearc waters for some 100,000 years. In 1999 ths underwater marvel was declared a World Hertage Ste by UNESCO. The marne plant s sad to have played a key part n the evoluton of the whte sands of the Balearc coastlne, to be responsble for the clarty of the sea water and to have formed the bedrock for a Medterranean ecosystem whch protects the qualty of the sea. Throughout 2017 there wll be a whole seres of events n Formentera amed at sponsorng the protecton of every sngle square metre of Posdona grass around the sland. Ths project wll be at ts heght n October ths year when the Save the Posdona festval wll be celebrated n Formentera. There wll be a selecton of sportng, cultural and envronmental actvtes. 12 IBIZA FORMENTERA Lghthouses of Formentera, cons of the marne landscape Off On A Comet (also known as Hector Servadac ) s a scence-fcton novel by Jules Verne that was wrtten n 1877. In ths novel, Verne features a lghthouse - La Mola n Formentera. The most famed of the sland s lghthouses, t s perched some two hundred metres above the sea on top of a clff on the eastern end of Formentera. The straght, dry stone wall-lned road to the lghthouse provdes ts own fascnaton, as the lghthouse draws ever closer. As a lookout spot, t gves amazng vews of the sunrse and sunset, and near to the lghthouse s a monument to Verne. There are two other lghthouses on the sland. Cap Barbara s the southernmost pont of Formentera and the whole of the Balearc archpelago. The lghthouse, whch opened n 1972, s surrounded by breathtakng rocky scenery. It has been used n flms and adverts and has become one of Formentera s prncpal attractons. The thrd lghthouse s n the port of La Savna. There s another lghthouse. Off the north of Formentera, there s a separate sland - S Espalmador - and just above ths sland s the slet of Porcs. It s n fact nearly as old as the La Mola lghthouse. It opened n 1864, three years after La Mola, and was the work of the same engneer, Eml Pou. The lghthouse and the slet are therefore close to the amazng nature park of Ses Salnes. IBIZA: THE OLD CITY WALLS The old cty walls or Dalt Vla of Ibza le at the heart of the old town. They offer wonderful panoramc vews, a treasure trove of hstory, mystery and dscoveres, spannng 2,500 years and encrclng buldngs that represent the sland s poltcal, relgous and commercal power. Ibza town s hstorc centre reflects archtectural features datng from medaeval, Renassance and modern tmes. The old cty walls are part of ths hstorc centre and are stuated n a walled precnct datng from the 16th century. Up untl the end of the 18th century, the old cty was hstorcally an mportant outpost largely due to ts strategc geographcal poston n the Medterranean s network of martme communcaton. It s no wonder then that the old cty walls took on the role of both protector and defender of Ibza. Of archtectural note are the Renassance fortfed walls datng from the 16th century, the town hall buldng (formerly a Domncan convent), the cathedral of Santa Mara de las Neves and the gates to the old cty. The ses Taules gateway s of outstandng nterest, gvng the vstor the feelng of enterng an ancent stronghold. The portal can be found alongsde the Mercat Vell or Old Market. The surroundng streets follow an rregular pattern n order to adapt to the varous levels of the old walls as they rse upwards. The renovaton and fortfcaton of Ibza town formed part of a modernsaton and defence plan for the Medterranean coasts ntroduced by Carlos I and Felpe II. Two engneers n the servce of the Crown were engaged n the work, Govan Battsta Calv who undertook the frst phase whch was begun n 1555 when the frst bastons were bult; and Jacobo Paleazz Fratn who joned the development n 1575. Paleazz Fratn started the constructon of a new defensve wall, extended another and made changes to the prncpal gateway to the cty. Accordng to specalsts, the plan of the two engneers was to use techncal advances n mltary archtecture whch were beng put nto effect on the manland of Span. There s documentary evdence of other master engneers, master stone masons and local labourers who took part n the works whch were ongong untl the end of of the 16th century. The man gateway to the old town of Ibza, known as the Puerta del Mar or the Portal de ses Taules, s famous for ts monumental arch flanked by two Roman statues (replcas as the orgnals are n the museum), a great sheld carved nto the stonework emblazoned wth the emblems of the Royal House of Felpe II and a memoral stone dsplayng the names of the kng and the governor of the day n 1585. The cty entrance stll preserves part of the orgnal machnery used to lft the drawbrdge over a moat dug out as part of the defence strategy of the day. Ths part of the town was declared a World Hertage ste by UNESCO n 1999. OPENALLYEARROUND The whte churches of Ibza, sanctuares ofthepast There was once an sland n the Medterranean known as the whte sland smply because ts archtecture was of ths same colour. Although Ibza today s full of all the colours of the spectrum, t contnues to preserve ts very specal whte churches. They are places of worshp whch are unque to the world as they were also used as fortresses to protect local people aganst attacks by prates. Many of these churches have defence towers smlar to those whch can be seen on mltary fortfcatons on the sland. These places of worshp became strongholds of the daly lfe of people n Ibza s towns and vllages andnmoderntmeshavebecomeplacestocelebrate festvals and concerts.
