POLIO MOVIE NIGHT As a part of Rotary s annual programme of fund raising to eliminate the scourge of Polio, from the planet we are once again able to offer a preview of a great movie at the Gold Coast Art s Centre, prior to its general release onto the cinema circuit. This year we have been offered Monuments Men a great story, with a fantastic cast, some of you may have seen the promo shorts on TV. Please see preview attached. Our showing at the Art s Centre will be on Wednesday 19 th February at 6:30pm. Tickets are $15 each, available through me via Convener Brian Pearson (RC of Broadbeach). I will send a list around over the next three (3) Tuesday nights. Graham, Secretary The Movie MONUMENTS MEN Release: 13 March 2014 Directed by: George Clooney (The Ides of March) Cast: George Clooney, Matt Darnon, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Cate Blanchett Genre : Action/Thriller/Drama Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, The Monuments Men focuses on an unlikely World War II platoon, tasked by FDR with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners. It would be an impossible mission: with the art trapped behind enemy lines, and with the German army under orders to destroy everything as the Reich fell, how could these guys - seven museum directors, curators, and art historians, all more familiar with Michelangelo than the M-I - possibly hope to succeed? But as the Monuments Men, as they were called, found themselves in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1000 years of culture, JANUARY IS STILL ROTARY AWARENESS MONTH Southport Rotary was well represented at the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) Dinner on Tuesday night at the Tyalgum Ridge Resort next to Mt Warning. 7 Rotary Club members and one partner made the trip to support Reece Wachter who is a leader this year and our sponsored awardees Jess Middleton, Toran Penfold and Courtney Dawson. Over 100 very energetic young adults are enjoying each other s company, hearing great guest speakers and learning about Rotary. Southport Rotary has had a strong tradition of supporting RYLA since its early days. The idea to bring young adults together started after1959, when a special youth program called Gundoo was introduced by the Queensland Government to mark the centenary of Queensland becoming a state. Rotary Clubs were involved hosting the young people who came from all over the state and continued the programme as RYLA after that. On Saturday, the District Group Study Exchange to District 4180 in Mexico will be launched in Murwillumbah. The team leader is Margarita Rickard, District Membership Chair and a member of the Mt Warning AM Club. Margarita is a fluent Spanish speaker which has been and will continue to be a great asset to the team of 4 young professionals: Kieran McAndrew, a water engineer from Grafton, Laura Hollingworth, a nurse from Glen Innes, Andrew Bradley, tourism management and Nicolai Poulson, a lawyer from Murwillumbah. The team leaves in mid February on this vocational and cultural exchange for a period of 5 weeks. This programme is Rotator- February 4 2014 4
