GET OUTDOORS 2019 SUMMER CAMP At Girl Scout summer camp, the adventure is high and the fun is big like, really big. Girls will spend their summer trying new things, exploring the great outdoors, making incredible memories with awesome new friends, and much more. Camping is a great way for girls to explore leadership, build skills, and develop a deep appreciation for nature. Whether for a mini session, one week, or longer, Girl Scout camp gives girls an opportunity to grow, explore, and have fun under the guidance of caring, trained adults. Our overnight camps are designed with girls in mind and offer a variety of activities that include aquatics and equestrian programs, archery, culinary and creative arts, high-adventure travel, and a whole lot of campfires, songs and s mores! Chicken, Director of Outdoor Leadership Experience Chicken is all things outdoors for the council! She is a seven-year council staff member, and a 12-year camp staff veteran - that s 12 years of introducing and inspiring a love for the great outdoors. We offer resident camp at Kamp Kiwani in Middleton, TN and at Camp Tik-A-Witha in Van Vleet, MS. Camps are open to all girls entering grades 1st - 12th, regardless of Girl Scout membership. Her past experience as assistant camp director, arts and crafts director, and wranglers-in-training director helps her create an outstanding summer camp program for our girls. Chicken is archery, challenge course, advanced backpacking, First Aid and CPR certified, plus she is a certified American Camp Association Director. Attending camp is consistently cited as girls favorite memories of their Girl Scout years. At camp, she ll rise to meet the challenges of learning new skills and earning badges, while enjoying what she already loves best. There are tons of fun activities, cool themes and unique programs for girls to choose from! We can t wait for your girl to Get Outdoors and get to camp! She is a graduate from The University of Mississippi with a Bachelors of Education. 2

Most meals are served family-style in the camp dining hall. Most campers will enjoy campfire cookouts, where they ll get to help plan and prepare the meals. If your girl has a food allergy please let us know so we can ensure her meals are prepared properly. WHERE WILL I SLEEP? One of the things that makes camp special is the outdoorsy appeal. Camp is definitely rustic, but totally awesome! Our campers live in a group with other girls who have signed up for the same session. Each unit has sleeping quarters for 16-24 girls. Most units contain fourperson cabins or tents. Each unit, or lodge has a dedicated bath house. We have three different types of sleeping accommodations: PLATFORM TENTS Platform tents are where most girls sleep. They are heavy canvas structures with wooden floors and four beds. Open flaps allow for light and ventilation. Girls rely on flashlights for lighting and summer night breezes to keep cool. CABINS Cabins have screened windows, and four or five beds. Girls rely on flashlights for lighting and summer night breezes to keep cool. Camp Tik-A-Witha cabins are equipped with electric lights. LODGES Our lodges are climate controlled and feature large open rooms with bunk beds. This is the only sleeping arrangement where counselors sleep in the same room with campers. In case of severe weather, indoor shelter is available. WHO WILL BE THERE? Summer Camp is a great time to make new friends, grow closer with your troop, or make memories with your BFF! MAKE NEW FRIENDS The majority of girls attend summer camp alone and ready to make new friends. Our camp counselors are pros at helping everyone get to know each other through fun games and icebreaker activities. BOND WITH YOUR TROOP Summer camp also offers amazing experiences for troops (Troop Kamping, Troop Trek) where we handle all the details and you all just come to have fun together. Troop leader required. MAKE MEMORIES WITH YOUR MOM Explore camp together with our mom & me sessions (Brownie Break Out I and II) that give a sample of summer camp. COME WITH A BUDDY You can also request one camp buddy* to bunk with during your time at camp. To be bunk buddies, you both must be registered for the same program and both must request each other by name, not troop number. Why just one buddy? Most campers stay in four-person tents or cabins. We do not allow groups of three to request each other because that leaves one girl in the tent/cabin who may feel left out. If you have more than one friend coming to camp with you, you ll have plenty of time to hang out with them during most of the daytime activities, like swimming, meals, and game time. 5 CAMP STAFF Our summer camp staff is friendly and engaged, reliable and responsible, creative and patient, supportive and respectful, dedicated and committed, understanding and caring, fun and upbeat, and trained. All of our staff members go through a rigorous screening and selection, including a background check, and thorough training process each summer. Our summer staff members are an experienced group of teachers, outdoor educators, college students, and former campers, who come from all over the United States to give your girl the best possible experience. COUNSELOR ACCOMMODATIONS With the exception of campers who sleep in a lodge, staff members do not stay in the same sleeping quarters as campers. Counselors stay in quarters near the center of the unit, where they can monitor everyone easily. At night, camp counselors will check to make sure everyone is settling in and feeling comfortable in their outdoor surroundings. Often, they ll read stories or sing each tent to sleep. Your girl s counselors are always within earshot if needed during the night. View camp staff bios online at www.girlscoutshs.org/camp

Attending camp is consistently cited as girls favorite memories of their Girl Scout years. By sending your girl to camp, she will develop leadership and outdoor skills and develop a deep appreciation for our natural world. Girl Scout camp gives girls an opportunity to grow, explore and have fun under the guidance of caring, trained adults. Camp is a magical experience... an opportunity to truly escape and focus on building courage, confidence and character. At summer camp, Girl Scouts will not only be having fun and trying new things, they ll also be earning badges, patches and awards. Check out the session descriptions to see what badges your girl could earn at summer camp. We ve broken down camp sessions by Girl Scout grade level. Camp sessions are indicated by the grade level a girl will be entering in the fall. Kamp Kiwani and Camp Tik-A-Witha are proud to be accredited by the American Camp Association! We know it can be hard to send her to camp for the first time, but you can feel at ease that, while she s having the time of her life discovering all the wonders of the great outdoors, trying new things, playing games, making friends, and so much more, she s well taken care of, happy, and learning critical life skills every step of the way. The American Camp Association is a community of camp professionals dedicated to enriching the lives of children and adults through the camp experience. A cornerstone of the ACA s efforts is its Accreditation process a way of grading how camps are doing. emergency response, and management practices and youth development. Standards are applied to all activities in camp including aquatics, horseback riding, adventure and challenge activities, and travel and trip programs. The ACA collaborates with experts from The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Red Cross, and other youth service agencies to assure that current practices at your child s camp reflect the most up-to-date, researchbased standards in camp operation. Camps and ACA form a partnership that promotes growth and fun in an environment committed to safety. The standards against which camps are measured ensure that each camp complies with approximately 300 distinct health, safety, and program quality benchmarks. Beyond a state s basic licensing requirements, ACA Standards address specific areas of programming, personnel, healthcare, ACA Accreditation is the best evidence parents have of a camp s commitment to a safe and nurturing environment for their children. ACA Accreditation means that your child s camp cares enough to undergo regular reviews of its operation. 7

If your girl is planning on using Passport Bucks from the MagNut or Girl Scout Cookie Program, register her as soon as possible and pay the $50 deposit. Pathway Bucks cannot be used to pay the deposit. Once she has completed the Cookie Program and received her Pathway Bucks she can apply them toward her final balance.
