Amish Cranberries History Unique Shopping Great Food Tours: Relaxing Accommodations Bringing your group to Tomah is an easy decision; choosing one of our itineraries is not! Pick a specific themed itinerary or ask for one to be customized. We do all the work for you. Cranberry Tour Our famous Cranberry Tour is an experience your group will never forget. Learn how this little berry became Wisconsin s state fruit and made Wisconsin the leading state in cranberry production. During early summer the cranberry vines blossom with delicate little flowers in the shape of a crane head (the cranberry was originally called the crane-berry by Native Americans). See honey bees pollinate the blossoms that form into the deep crimson berries. This process gives bee keepers the one-of-a-kind cranberry honey. September & October brings beautiful fall foliage and the cranberry harvest season. Your group will watch the cranberry marsh workers gently beat the berries off their vines creating a sea of red and blue. See how the berries roll through 100-year old sorting machines and pass under the latest computer scanners technology has to offer. Your group has the opportunity to purchase berries right at the cranberry marsh. Following your stop at the marsh your next stop will be at the Wisconsin Cranberry Discovery Center. The only center in the nation dedicated to the preservation of the heritage of the cranberry industry. The Center s 4,800-square foot exhibit hall details the history of the state s cranberry industry, from the days when Native Americans gathered fruit in the wild to today s unique growing and harvesting methods. Browse the specialty gift shop area featuring a large selection of cranberry specialty products from Wisconsin and across the continent. Cranberry wine, mustards, syrups, toppings, sweetened dried cranberries and a variety of other items on hand. The retail area also features one of the most diverse collections of hand-blown cranberry glass in the area. Now that you know how cranberries (crane-berries) received their name learn more about the whooping and sandhill cranes at the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge. The Refuge s success in preserving and restoring habitat for wildlife is evident by the sights you will see from the designated viewing areas. The Refuge is also home to the famous Karner blue butterfly, bald eagles, gray wolves, thousands of birds including scaup, wigeons, swans, ring-necks, canvasbacks, mallards, teal, Canada geese and shorebirds. Learn about the Refuge s partnership with the International Crane Foundation and much more about this beautiful, natural 43,656-acre refuge. Finish up your cranberry tour by enjoying some local cranberry cuisine offered at one of our distinctive restaurants.

More Tour Options To Tomah Amish Tour Take a step back in time on the Amish Tour. Monroe County is home to more than 200 Amish families. The families first came to Monroe County in 1966. The largest number of Amish families resides around the community of Cashton. They chose the Cashton area for its rich and fertile farmland, low real estate prices and the lay of the land. They also chose this area because it was far from a city of any size, which might influence their young people to the worldly ways and yet close enough to a small town for amenities. Your group will experience the intriguing lifestyle of the Amish through the eyes of an experienced tour guide in the heart of Amish Country. Your tour will take you back to a quieter, simpler way of life where a buggy and colorful quilts airing on the clotheslines are not uncommon sights. Visit Amish farms to learn about the crafts they make to supplement their farm income. Watch rugs being woven, see how collapsible wooden baskets are made, visit an Amish bakery and purchase fresh made breads, rolls, candy and pies! Your group will also have other opportunities to purchase locally made Amish products. Your group members will leave our area with an appreciation for the Amish lifestyle and an understanding of why they choose our beautiful region to make their home. Amish Cranberries History Unique Shopping Great Food Relaxing Accommodations History & Education Tour No visit to Tomah is complete without a little history. Every community has a story to tell and Tomah is no exception. Our History & Education Tour will introduce your group to some wonderful community stories that include a comic strip, an army tank or two, a railroad and horse races. Learn how Tomah was named Gasoline Alley in the comic strip created by native son Frank King. Visit Fort McCoy and receive a guided tour of the only Army installation base in Wisconsin. Visit the Commemorative Area and Historical Center that features a collection of memorabilia which reflects Fort McCoy s role in World War I, World War II, the Korean Conflict, the Cuban Refugee Resettlement Center, Operation Desert Storm, and many other displays. See the Little Red Schoolhouse Museum in Gillett Park in downtown Tomah. Learn about the history of the park and the city s founder Robert E. Gillett. Learn how Tomah went from a farming community to having a large lumber industry while visiting the Tomah History Museum. The Museum has several displays that depict items related to earlier times in Tomah. As your bus drives down Superior Avenue see the beautiful boulevards that line the street and learn why the street was made so wide to hold horse races down it.

Tomah is truly Wisconsin s Cranberry Country and the crossroads for West Central Wisconsin. Tomah s location is midway between the Twin Cities and Milwaukee, where the state s interstate system (I-90 & I-94) divides. Four state highways (Hwy. 21, 12, 16 & 131) also bring you conveniently to Tomah. Getting to us is no problem! Chicago 257 Des Moines 378 Green Bay 154 La Crosse 45 Wis. Originally, in 1890, a 40 by 100-foot livery stable was built. It was the leading and most up-to-date livery stable of its kind and was owned by Louie Knobloch, a well known farmer of the county who also conducted an automobile service. This was the place where people congregated and discussed the events of the day. The livery stable employed several stable men and grooms, and careful drivers were furnished on all occasions when required. Then after the turn of the century it was converted into the Tomah Theatre. Finally, in 1960, it became the home of the Tee Pee Supper Club, and as always, this spot on Superior Avenue is the gathering place for Tomah residents and its visitors.
