Questions? Comments? Please send an email to info@wosu.org or call 614.292.9678. NPR political reporter Asma Khalid May 24 Dialogue: Excuse me, is that seat taken? A Look at Women in Ohio Politics Inspired by the 2017 Women s March on Washington, the #MeToo movement and other forces, 2018 is shaping up to be a record year for women running for elected office. Rutgers University s Center for American Women and Politics counts 309 women running for seats in the US House, 29 women running for US Senate and 40 women running in governors races. Among Ohio elected officials, the gender gap remains wide. Even though women make up the majority of the population, they remain in the minority in public office. The Ohio legislature has never been more than 25% female and currently stands at 22%. Only a quarter of county commissioners are women. And the current governor s race which began with four female candidates, dwindled down to one. While women around the country look to make history, can women in the Buckeye State break barriers this year? The May 24th edition of Dialogue, presented by WOSU and OSU s John Glenn College of Public Affairs, will examine Ohio s political gender gap. Hosted by NPR political correspondent Asma Khalid, the event will explore the challenges and opportunities for female candidates. She ll be joined by state senator Charleta Tavares (D- Columbus), Columbus Recreation and Parks' Sophia Fifner and OSU political science professor Wendy Smooth. We encourage you to join the Dialogue Thursday, May 24 at 6pm at OSU s Fawcett Center. For more details, go to wosu.org/dialogue. 2 For detailed listings, visit wosu.org
