osta Rica is one of the C planet s most naturally remarkable regions. It s full of imposing volcanoes, misty cloud forests, exotic wildlife, deep river valleys and spectacular beaches. Because of its incredibly rich and varied biodiversity, it has become one of the world's most popular destinations for eco-tourists. Both tropical plant and animal species abound in Costa Rica. It possesses the greatest concentration of flora and fauna in the world, containing as much as 6% of the plantet s plant and animal species, and about a quarter of its national territory is protected COSTA RICA Pura Vida by a system of conservation areas and national parks. Some of the more impressive plants range from huge ficus trees with epiphytes abounding on their limbs to about 1500 different kinds of orchids. The animals are equally impressive, with nearly 250 different species of mammals including jaguars (the largest cat in the the Americas), ocelots, howler monkeys, white head-capuchins, spider monkeys, two species of sloths and the giant ant eater. 894 bird species have been recorded in Costa Rica like the green and scarlet macaws, the resplendent quetzal, and the keelbilled Toucan. The reptiles and amphibians are also quite impressive with over 400 species such as the poison dart frogs with their bright colors, red-eyed tree frogs, the semitransparent glass frogs, over 70 species of lizards, and 5 of the world's 7 species of sea turtles which nest on the countries beaches. Costa Rica s climate is Tropical all year round. However, the country has many microclimates depending on elevation, rainfall, topography, and by the geography of each particular region. Its seasons are defined by how much rain falls during a particular period and not to the four seasons in the Northern Hemisphere. The year can be split into two periods, the dry season known to the residents as summer (from December to April), and the rainy season, known locally as winter (from May to November). The country s natural wonders, along with its family friendly culture and great year-round weather make it an ideal destination for the adventure minded and those seeking sun and relaxation alike. A BEAUTIFUL SETTING Highlights of what you ll experience on your 12-day trip to Costa Rica Monteverde Monteverde is a major ecotourism destination in Costa Rica. Set atop the mountains in the northwestern part of the country, it s a world above the coastal towns that dot the country's famous shoreline. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve shelters countless wildlife species, including jaguars, ocelots, monkeys, sloths and the colorfully plumed quetzal. National Geographic calls it "the jewel in the crown of cloud forest reserves". Tamarindo Once a quiet fishing town, Tamarindo has become the area s most popular tourist destination. Located on the central west coast of the Nicoya Peninsula in the Province of Guanacaste, Tamarindo offers visitors a chance to experience the region s spectacular unspoilt beaches and incredible biodiversity. It forms part of Parque Nacional Marino Las Baulas and the Tamarindo National Wildlife Refuge. ITINERARY Spring Break 2019 Rincon de la Vieja This 34,800-acre national park is home to a fascinating combination of volcanic geological wonders and pristine tropical forests. The park provides a safe haven for a host of flora and fauna including howler monkeys, white-faced capuchins, toucans, parrots and tapirs. The area around Rincon de La Vieja is active with geothermal activity and is know for the famous Rincon de la Vieja Volcano. Day 1 Arrival in Costa Rica: Fly to Liberia International Airport and meet your CSLI tour director. Transfer to your hotel at Rincon de la Vieja National Park. Day 2 River Tubing: Meet at reception for a horseback ride to your tubing adventure. Upon arrival to Los Chorros, you ll leave the horses and go tubing down the river. Afternoon hike through the jungle to go swimming at Chorreras waterfall. Day 3 Tamarindo: Transportation to Tamarindo, your home for the next 6 days. On the way, you ll stop to visit a local elementary school. Upon arrival in Tamarindo, you ll have your placement test and first Spanish class at the school before meeting your host family. Day 4 Flamingo Beach: Free morning at the beach with picnic lunch. Latin dance class and Day 5 Sailing Trip: You ll go for a sailing trip off the coast of Tamarindo and stop at a coral reef to do some snorkeling. Lunch on board while sailing. Day 6 Conchal Beach: Free day at the beach with picnic lunch. Day 7 Surfing Lessons: You ll go to Tamarindo beach for your surfing lessons with free time to enjoy the beach afterwards. Day 8 Outrigger Canoeing: You ll go canoeing on outriggers from Sugar Beach to a small island. Free time on the island to enjoy the beach and go snorkeling. Day 9 Jungle River Cruise: Departure from Tamarindo to Monteverde. Stop at Tempisque River on the way for a jungle boat cruise this river is a sanctuary for birds, crocodiles, monkeys and many other types of wildlife. Arrive at Monteverde in the evening and meet your host family. Day 10 Jungle Tour: Walking tour through the jungle to see all kinds of animals in their habitat. Visit to El Trapiche coffee and sugar cane plantation in the afternoon. Day 11 Zip-line Adventure: Canopy tour/zip-line adventure in the jungle. Latin cooking class at the school in the afternoon. Visit to the Monteverde Frog Pond in the evening. Day 12 Departure from Costa Rica: Transfer to the airport End of trip. *Itinerary subject to change
