The Friends of the Brick Library Branch of the Ocean County Library 301 Chambers Bridge Rd., Brick, NJ 08723 May 2017 Newsletter Mark your calendars: The Friends of the Brick Library meet on the first Wednesday of the month. The next meeting is June 7 th, 2017 at 11 a.m. in the Library Meeting Room. President: Dorothy Holtzman Vice-President: Mariette Muller Secretary: Vicky Aufiero Treasurer: Barbara Guzzi Members-at-Large: Florence Taggart and Marilyn Lago Committee Chairs: Membership: Susan MacDougall Hospitality: Joanne Nebenburgh Book Sales: Louise D Alessio Newsletter: Susan MacDougall History: Aileen Coleson Sunshine: Jill Holland Trips: Vicky Aufiero Message from the President Hello! I don t know if I should be greeting you or bidding you a fond farewell. I have been your president for eight years, but that time is coming to an end in June. I will be moving to Beaver County in southwestern Pennsylvania next month. Since I am now a widow and I retired in January, I am returning to my roots to be closer to my family. I thank everyone for their ideas, time, effort and cooperation through the years. I will miss all of you. Please allow me to catch you up on our exciting happenings. Marianne Moscatiello, Joanne Nebenburgh, Barbara Guzzi and I attended the Easy Sew Whales sewing class for teens on March 8. I mostly observed while the others helped the 11 teens attending a great deal. Teen librarian Brooke Jacob, who managed the event, later stated that our help was very much appreciated and the evening was fun for all. At the April meeting, we had Stephen Scaturro and Ed McBride, the director and deputy director of the Ocean County Consumer Affairs Department, as guest speakers. Their concise presentation was thorough and enlightening for all of us as consumers. Numerous questions were asked and everyone had a much better understanding of different matters such as telemarketing scams, identity theft and safe charity giving. The information packet that was distributed to all contained lots of valuable information.

Friends of the Brick Library is now selling reading (book) lights for the nominal fee of $5.00. These lights make reading in bed or on a form of public transportation very feasible. They also make great gifts. If you would like to purchase one, please contact Mariette Muller at 732-920- 1938. Friends is also sponsoring a Flea Market on Saturday, May 13. We thank member Jill Holland for chairing this important event. Please read more about it below and find some great bargains and scrumptious baked goods. Lastly, our spring luncheon will immediately follow our meeting on June 7 at the cost of $10.00 per person. Reservations are required. Please call me at 732-262-3170 or 732-581-1158. You can also call Joanne Nebenburgh at 201-681-7991 or 732-920-1627. I hope to see all of you. Sincerely, Dorothy Holtzman Friends Flea Market On Saturday, May 13 th contributions of small sale items can be dropped off between 9:00 noon in our meeting room (please no clothing or shoes.) Baked goods of cookies, brownies, and cupcakes (all wrapped to sell) are needed. Sale will be open to the public at noon and run until 4:00p.m. There will be a special raffle during the Flea Market offered by The MAX Challenge of Brick on Cedar Bridge Av. You can win a one month fitness challenge for you and a friend. This is a $250 value for the 4 week challenge. So, make sure to come out and get your free raffle ticket. And while you re at it, pick up something nice for Mother s Day. If you are able to help in any way, please call Jill Holland at 732 899 5455. Thank you! If you have items to donate, but cannot drop off on the 13 th, call Jill for possible pick up. Spring Trip The Friends of the Library Spring trip will be to Staten Island on Wed, May 17, 2017. The pickup will be at Kmart Shopping Center at 8:45 a.m. for a 9:00 a.m. departure returning at 6 p.m. We will visit the Snug Harbor Botanical Garden, have lunch near the waterfront, and then visit the National Lighthouse Museum. The cost of the trip is $88, which includes transportation, entrance fees, gratuity, and lunch. Please contact Vicky Aufiero at 732 713 6084 if interested. All are welcome.

Sunshine Jill Holland If you hear of a member of the Brick Friends who is hospitalized, in rehab, or ill, Jill Holland will gladly send a card on behalf of the Friends. She can be reached at 732 899 5455 Farewell The Friends of the Brick Library wish our President, Dorothy Holtzman, much good luck and best wishes as she embarks on the next phase of her life in retirement. We have long appreciated her competent leadership, and cheerful guidance as we raise funds for programs, events, and equipment for our library. She has welcomed new members and mentored our committee chairpeople in her quest to make the Brick Library a friendly place. The Friends of the Brick Library will miss her!
