HISTORY & GARDENS OF THE CARIBBEAN ROUNDTRIP ANTIGUA ABOARD SEA CLOUD JANUARY 12 TO 19, 2014 WITH PATRICK BOWE

Dear National Trust Travelers, Sail with us aboard the legendary Sea Cloud on a seven-night Caribbean voyage to see historic plantation houses, exquisite botanical gardens and a restored governor s mansion. With their balmy island breezes and centuries-old tradition of gardening, the Caribbean islands offer a delightful interlude to cooler northern weather. We are delighted to be joined by Dublin-based horticulturist Patrick Bowe, author of the Gardens of the Caribbean. A sought-after lecturer and popular National Trust study leader, Patrick continues to delight travelers with his witty presentations, both formal and on site. Our voyage begins in Antigua, where we embark Sea Cloud and set sail for chic St. Barthélemy, with its stunning white-sand beaches and French savoir faire. Call next at Tortola to see the recently restored Old Government House, a historic landmark, and visit the lush Governor s Garden, with its spectacular harbor view. On Virgin Gorda, enjoy a swim at the Baths and sample a rum punch at the exclusive Bitter End Yacht Club. Then step ashore on the Dutch island of St. Eustatius for an architectural walking tour and some leisure time in this birder s paradise. On Nevis, visit the childhood home of Alexander Hamilton and stroll in the island s spectacular botanic garden before continuing to the Iles des Saintes, with their charming colonial-style capital. Sea Cloud is the most celebrated sailing ship of her kind. Built for Marjorie Merriweather Post and E.F. Hutton, this magnificent four-masted beauty has carried royalty, heads of state and high society. Offering elegant accommodations, fine dining and impeccable service, she continues her grand tradition of a wonderful mix of luxury and informality. TORTOLA & VIRGIN GORDA ST. EUSTATIUS NEVIS ST. BARTHÉLEMY A NTIGUA We hope you will join us to discover the history and gardens of the Caribbean in the congenial company of members of the Smithsonian Institution, on what promises to be an exceptional journey. Sincerely, I LES DES SAINTES Scott Gerloff Director, National Trust Tours CARIBBEAN SEA The National Trust for Historic Preservation is a private, nonprofit membership organization dedicated to saving historic places and revitalizing America s communities. MIAMI 1 ANTIGUA Sunday, January 12 Fly from Miami to Antigua and transfer to Sea Cloud for our seven-night cruise. ST. BARTHELEMY Monday, January 13 Arrive in small but cosmopolitan St. Barthelémy and experience the chic French savoir faire as we stroll past the cafés and boutiques. Swimmers will have an opportunity to enjoy one of many beautiful, white-sand beaches. This evening the captain will host welcome cocktails and dinner. TORTOLA, BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS Tuesday, January 14 Today we step ashore on Tortola, the largest of the British Virgin Islands. Visit the J.R. O Neal Botanic Garden, a four-acre property that includes a lush array of indigenous and exotic tropical plants. Continue to the Governor s House for a walk through the Governor s Garden, laden with palm trees and various flowering plants, as well as a spectacular view overlooking Road Harbour. Return to Sea Cloud in time for lunch. VIRGIN GORDA, BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS Wednesday, January 15 Tender ashore at the southern end of Virgin Gorda to explore the Baths, gigantic boulders piled willy-nilly along the sandy beach, which create small pools and interesting cave-like structures. In the afternoon sail to the North Sound of Virgin Gorda. You may wish to go ashore to visit the famous Bitter End Yacht Club prior to a delicious barbeque dinner on deck. EUSTATIUS, NETHERLANDS ANTILLES Thursday, January 16 Arrive at the small Dutch island of St. Eustatius, once known as one of the busiest seaports in the world. An afternoon architectural walking tour through the town is followed by time at leisure. You may wish to join an optional excursion or explore this charming island on your own before Sea Cloud sails in the early evening. ILES DES SAINTES, GUADELOUPE Saturday, January 18 The Iles des Saintes is an archipelago of eight tiny volcanic islands and site of the Battle of the Saintes between the Royal Navy and the French Fleet in 1782. During a morning ashore, you may wish to tour the charming colonialstyle capital, Terre-de-Haut, or visit the 17th-century Fort Napoleon with its commanding views and exotic gardens. Or perhaps enjoy a swim at one of the white-sand beaches before returning to Sea Cloud. ANTIGUA 1 MIAMI Sunday, January 19 Disembark this morning in Antigua. Visit two private gardens and enjoy a light lunch before transferring to the airport for the afternoon flight to Miami. n NEVIS Friday, January 17 On Nevis, visit the childhood home of Alexander Hamilton, before exploring the island s spectacular Botanic Gardens, a five-acre property containing a variety of tropical plants, orchids and a rainforest conservancy. Return to the ship for lunch and an afternoon at sea. This evening, join the captain for a farewell reception and dinner as we celebrate a memorable voyage. English Harbour, Antigua.

Children must pay the full price, and those under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. There is no maximum age limit. PLEASE NOTE: Participants must be in excellent health and able to participate in tour activities. Any physical condition that may require special medical attention (for example, the need of a wheelchair) must be reported at the time of your reservation. Participants must be able to walk on uneven surfaces and through extensive gardens. If you have any doubt about your ability to participate fully due to health conditions or disabilities, contact the National Trust at (888) 484-8785 or (202) 588-6300. In such case, the refund will be limited to the actual cost of unused tour services. Please note: Sea Cloud does not have an elevator. TRAVEL INSURANCE The National Trust for Historic Preservation strongly recommends that all tour participants purchase Trip Cancellation, Emergency Medical Evacuation, Accident/Sickness/Medical, and Baggage insurance for their tour. Upon receipt of your initial tour deposit by National Trust Tours, a comprehensive travel insurance plan, underwritten by National Union Fire Insurance Company of Pittsburgh, PA, will be sent. Three options will be made available to all National Trust tour participants. This insurance offers important, time-sensitive benefits (varying with option selected) including: 1) Pre-existing Waiver, which waives the pre-existing medical condition exclusion; 2) Financial default of an airline, cruise line or tour operator; and 3) Cancel for Any Reason, with the Elite option, which provides coverage if you cancel your trip for reasons not covered under a traditional trip cancellation policy. To qualify for these time-sensitive benefits, (a) you must purchase the Plus or Elite option within 15/21 days (depending on option selected) of the date of your letter from National Trust Tours confirming receipt of your initial deposit; (b) you insure all prepaid trip costs that are subject to cancellation penalties or restrictions; and (c) you are not disabled from travel at the time you pay your premium. For complete details or to enroll on-line, visit www.travelinsuranceservices.com/select/nthp, or call USI Travel Insurance Services at (800) 937-1387. CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS All cancellations must be in writing and are subject to a $350 non-refundable processing fee. At the time AAA receives written notification of cancellation, the following cancellation charges will apply: cancellations received between 120 and 91 days prior to departure, 20 percent of the program cost per person; those received between 90 and 61 days before departure, 50 percent of the program cost per person; no refunds will be given for cancellations received within 60 days of departure. No refunds are given for cancellation on day of departure or after, or for unused portions of tour. Trip cancellation insurance is strongly recommended. Air cancellation penalties will be assessed in accordance with airline regulations. NOTE: Neither the National Trust for Historic Preservation nor AAA accepts liability for any airline cancellation penalties incurred with the purchase of non-refundable tickets. In the case of a cancellation due to shortage of participants, AAA will attempt to notify all participants at least 45 days prior to departure. The right is reserved by AAA to cancel any tour prior to departure for any reason. In such case, refund of the cost of the trip shall constitute full settlement with the passenger. RESPONSIBILITY CLAUSE The National Trust for Historic Preservation, in order to make an educational opportunity available to its members, has arranged for AAA to organize our tour and procure carriage, accommodations and other tour services from other parties. Once tour members register for the tour, they must contact and otherwise deal with AAA. Neither AAA nor any other suppliers of tour services are joint venturers with or in any way controlled by the National Trust. The National Trust can undertake no responsibility for the accuracy of representations in tour promotion literature, for tour reservations, accommodations, transportation or safety, nor any other aspect of the tour except preservation-related educational programs and the liaison between the National Trust and other preservationists. Consequently, the National Trust shall not be construed to make any covenants or warranties, expressed or implied, regarding our tours, and shall not be liable in any way for any personal injury, death, property damage or loss incurred by any person in connection with our tours. AAA and/or their agents assume no responsibility or liability in connection with the service of any train, carriage, aircraft or other conveyance that may be used wholly or in part in the performance of their duty to the passengers; neither will they be responsible for any act, error or omission, or for any injury, loss, accident, delay or irregularity that may be occasioned by reason of any defect in any vehicle, or through neglect or default of any company or person engaged in carrying out the purpose for which tickets or coupons are issued. In the event it becomes necessary or advisable for the comfort or wellbeing of the passengers, or any reason whatsoever, to alter the itinerary or arrangements, such alterations may be made without penalty to the tour operators. Additional expenses, if any, shall be borne by the passengers. However, when the tour departs the U.S., no refund can be made for any feature of the program not used by the passenger during operation of the tour. The agent reserves the right to decline to accept or retain any person as a member of the tour at any time. In such case the refund will be limited to the actual cost of the unused land tour services. The sole responsibility of any airline used in any tour is limited to that set out in the passenger contract evidenced by the ticket. Any ARC/IATA carriers used are not responsible for any act, omission or event during the time passengers are not aboard their planes or conveyances. Similar responsibilities as noted above apply to all types of carriers. Copyright 2013 Arrangements Abroad, Inc. CST 2059789-40 On the front cover: Iles des Saintes, photo Stanley Hutton Rumbough.
