Check in to your local hotel, such as the Best Western Irazu or equivalent. Relax and enjoy your evening. Day 3 Visit Irazu Volcano National Park Visit La Basilica de Nuestra Senora de Los Angeles Visit to Mercado Central with a Tortilla Tasting Guided Tour of San Jose and the National Theater Rise early for a delicious breakfast at your hotel, then depart for Irazu Volcano National Park. This volcano was named by the indigenous people who live nearby, Istaru Volcano, or mountain of thunder and tremors. Its last major eruption was in 1963. The craters here are typically surrounded by clouds and fog, but occasional reveal their full, incredible vista. The main crater contains a beautiful green water sulfur lagoon. On a clear day, from its highest point, it is possible to see both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Travel onwards to lunch at a local restaurant as you return to San Jose by way of Cartago City, where you will visit La Basilica de Nuestra Senora de los Angeles. This site receives thousands of Catholics each year who wish to honor and pray to La Negrita, the saint of Costa Rica. Stop in Cartago and visit the Mercado Central, where you will experience an authentic tortilla tasting. Return to San Jose and depart on a guided tour of the city, which will include insights into Costa Rican history and culture. You will also stop at the National Theater for a historic walking tour this theater was completed in 1897 and is regarded as a masterpiece of art and architecture. Return to your local hotel for dinner and overnight accommodations. Day 4 Visit Poas Volcano National Park Visit Coffee Plantation with Tasting Visit La Paz Waterfall Garden Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before departing for Poas Volcano National Park. On the way, stop at a coffee plantation to taste the arabica variety of coffee. Your journey to the National Park includes incredible views and a road lined with coffee plantations and strawberry fields. P a g e 3 Day 5 Rafting on the Sarapiqui River Leaf Cutter Ant Colony Eco-Tour Transfer to Arenal Gather your belongings to depart after breakfast at your San Jose hotel. Today, you will prepare for the activity of a lifetime: rafting on the Sarapiqui River. It offers Costa Rica s most enjoyable white-water rafting (class II-III) against a backdrop of vibrant rainforests and stunning vistas. This free-flowing river originates in clear mountain streams that tumble down through the rainforest to meet with the waters of the Sarapiqui. It is a narrow waterway ideal for beginners and nature-lovers: keep your eyes peeled for toucans, woodpeckers, and more. After a short safety briefing, you will begin your journey downriver. After rafting, enjoy lunch. Today you will also have the opportunity to take an up close and personal look at the fascinating lives of leaf cutter ants. Learn and appreciate their unique caste system and division of labor. These ants work in cooperation to maintain an advanced, fungus-based agricultural system that is headed by a singular queen. Impressive! Continue to Arenal. Cross a large agricultural area scattered with cattle as the impressive Arenal Volcano looms closer! The volcano s last eruption was in 1968 after thousands of years of dormancy. In the evening, you will arrive at your new local hotel, such as Lavas Taoctal or similar. Enjoy spectacular views of the nearby volcano and a delicious dinner. Day 6 Visit Don Juan s Finca Educativa Community Service at Codecita Farm Arenal Sky Tram and Sky Trek Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before departing for Finca Educativa Don Juan, an educational center and model for sustainable agriculture. Don Juan, using his passion for sustainable living, will educate you during your visit to the farm. Enjoy lunch at this facility, which will be a simple meal complimented by the bold flavors of ingredients grown right on the farm. After your visit to Finca Educative Don Juan is complete, depart for the Sky Tram and Trek. The Sky Tram will lift you smoothly above the rainforest, offering incredible views as you ascend to the observation platform at the highest point of Arenal Reserve. Try returning via zip line from this point! You will race

Lunch at Codecita Farm which follows with community service with an emphasis on social and ecological activities at Escazu, San José. This consists of a half day of volunteer work. We will visit the Codecita farm, located in the Escazu Hills Protected Zone. The farm, which aims to protect water resources, soil, flora and fauna, has been purchased by the local community, which organized and pooled its resources to buy the land. Volunteers can walk along the trails and participate in the reforestation effort. Native trees and all the necessary tools for planting will be provided. After work, volunteers can snap a photo next to the tree that they planted, and CODECE will provide them with a copy.
