The musement Park 1 erek was turning eight on Saturday, and his parents had promised to take him to the amusement park. erek had heard about the amusement park rides from the other kids at school. His friend, Nicholas, had told everyone that he rode every ride at the park and was never afraid. Salvatore said the roller coaster scared him, but he rode it anyway. Even Isabella, the quietest girl in erek s class, had been to the amusement park and rode some of the rides. Everyone talked about how much fun they had at the park. erek was the last one in the class to go. He was so excited. He could not wait for Saturday to arrive! 2 erek had a hard time sleeping on Friday night. Normally his parents had to wake him up each morning. ut this Saturday, he was dressed and ready to go when his dad opened the bedroom door. erek grabbed his dad s hand and pulled him to the front door. Let s go, ad, he said. 3 Slow down, we have to wait on your mom. She is cooking breakfast, his dad said chuckling. 4 o we have to eat at home? an we eat at the park? erek asked. 5 ad laughed and said that the tickets into the park cost a lot of money. They would save some money by eating at home. erek was too excited to eat much. He played with his eggs and nibbled his toast. We did not come here to look at gifts. 7 erek thought of another way he might avoid going on the rides. Mom, I m hungry. an we get something to eat? he whined. Mom just shook her head and said that he should have eaten his breakfast at home. 8 erek was so nervous that his stomach began to hurt. The closer his parents and he got to the roller coaster ride, the harder he squeezed his dad s hand. ad just squeezed his hand back and smiled. Finally, erek told his dad that he needed to talk to him. ad knelt down by erek and said, What s wrong, son? 9 I m afraid I m too short to ride on the roller coaster. What if I can t get on it? Everyone at school will make fun of me, erek explained. 10 ad grinned and grabbed erek by the hand. They walked over to the gift shop, and ad bought a tall baseball cap for erek.
