Joint Section Picnic Hiwan Homestead Museum, Saturday, July 14, 2018 at noon 4208 Timbervale Dr., Evergreen You won t want to miss this fun and fascinating historical tour. A cool, summer afternoon at this true hidden gem in Evergreen! We will meet at 11:45 am at the Museum for our special guided tour. In the 1890's, Mary Neosho Williams, a Civil War widow, and her daughter Josepha, part of the aristocratic society of Denver acquired a simple log structure and hired a Scottish carpenter to convert it into a summer cottage. In 1889, Josepha graduated from Medical School in Denver and became one of Colorado's first women doctors. Seven years later, Josepha married Canon Charles Winfred Douglas, an Episcopal clergyman who achieved world acclaim for his musical work. After Joespha s death in 1938 the house was sold to Tulsa oilman, Darst Buchanan and the property named Hiwan Ranch, after Buchanan's prize winning Hiwan Hereford cattle. Six generations of notable families lived in this rustic mountain lodge (each adding new rooms), before it was developed as a museum by Jefferson County in 1974. We will tour this wonderful home with one of the Hiwan s special tourguides. After our tour we will enjoy a picnic lunch at the Shelter in the Hiwan Heritage Park just adjacent to the Museum. This is one of Jay and my favorite places. The Museum and grounds are beautiful, with a rich history and peaceful mountain setting. We really are looking forward to hosting our joint picnic at this venue. Cost is $17.50 per person, which includes your admission to the museum and lunch. Please sign up using the reservation form below, and mail the form & payment to Jay Hokanson by July 7, 2018. Directions to the Hiwan Homestead Museum are: Exit I-70 at Exit 252 and follow signs for Evergreen Parkway (HWY 74), Drive on HWY 74 for 7.1 Miles and turn LEFT on Douglas Park Rd, Drive for 0.3 miles on Douglas Park Rd and turn LEFT on Meadow Dr, in 0.3 miles turn LEFT on Timbervale Dr., In 0.1 miles arrive at Hiwan Homestead Museum at 4208 Timbervale Dr., Evergreen, CO 80439 There are several alternate routes from C-470 via two lane canyon roads. FORT COLLINS DRIVE JOIN US FOR A LOVELY FALL DRIVE Saturday, September 15, 2018 1. Meet at 9:30am at Starbucks, 45 East 120th Ave. Thornton, at the northeast corner of I-25 and 120th Avenue. From I-25 drive east on 120th one block to Grant Street. Turn left and drive north a bit to enter the retail area on the left. Starbucks is way over in the southwest corner of the retail area. People who live up north are welcome to meet us at the restaurant. 2. Vote for our preferred route: either north on I-25 or west on 120th (Hwy 128) to Broomfield, then north on U.S. 287. 3. At about 9:45 or so, head for the rustic venerable restaurant on the Poudre River northwest of Ft Collins: The Mishawaka Amphitheatre, 13714 Poudre Canyon Highway, Bellvue, CO, 970-482-4420, www.themishawaka.com. 4. If we vote to take U.S. 287, drive north through Ft. Collins. The road curves around to the west and about 8 miles from Ft Collins splits between U.S. 287 and Hwy 14 (Poudre Canyon Road). A Shell Station is on the corner. Take Hwy 14 about 14 miles to Mishawaka on the right near MM (mile marker) 109. 5. If we vote to take I-25, drive north to Hwy 14 (Mulberry in Ft Collins). Go west on Mulberry to North College Ave. (U.S. 287). Turn north and continue as in #4 above. 6. Meet for lunch about 11:45 to noon and enjoy good food and socializing at a beautiful setting next to the river. 7. So that I can give the restaurant a head count for lunch, please inform me by September 8 if you plan to go. And thank you. Michael Davison, mhd539@msn.com. Ph 720-233-741 9
