Prez Release February Hi All, Well, one down and one to go. The Sportsmens Show is on the 15 th through the 17 th of February. Setup for the show is on the 14 th (does that date ring a bell fo you folks?) I ll bring over the display around 12:00 p.m. If you can please sign up for setup and/or taking down the display. I talked to the Forest Service about their weed seed feed display that they had at the last TWIG to see if we could use it and they said we could. Other than that, it will be the same display. Please sign up for manning the booth. This is the last big other than ride event. We could really use the help. The fundraiser at Indian John Rest Area is OVER. I think it went well and my thanks to all who worked so hard to make this a success. I think next year we should look at doing this FR in February or early March. It just happened to be the coldest weekend of the year. The heaters worked well and the graveyard shift was much more bearable with my trusty sleeping bag. In fact it was too comfortable. I awoke to a guy yelling for me to wake up. He was laughing pretty hard by the time he left. The Public Lands Committee of BCHW is watching the Deep Creek/Swamp Lake road closures very closely. We re talking to the Naches FS about the possibility of expanding the Mt. Aix trailhead for accessing the trails, maybe a trail rather than riding the road. I talked to Paul Wilson, the outfitter up there (Chinook Pass Outfitters) and he said riding the road isn t any better than driving that darn thing. The closure is the 1800 and 1808 roads. It ll be closed at least two year, but more likely much longer. I talked to Sue Ranger about this and this is the main agenda item for the APRIL 1st TWIG meeting. We haven t rode since Arizona, that seems so long ago now. I m really looking forward to some saddle time. Rattlesnake Ridge Riders has their CHILI FEED RIDE coming up on March 9 th. Get there early. Long ride heads out at 10 a.m., short ride at 10:30 a.m. The next day, Sunday the 10 th, we ll have a chapter ride at the LT Murray. Meet at the parking lot off Buffalo Road at 10:00 a.m., bring a lunch. The rest of March is busy. We have the Hanford Reach ride on the 15 th, again bring a lunch. And please be ready to ride at 10:00 a.m. It s at least an hour and a half drive from Naches, the gate is just past MP 62. Watch for signs. The first campout/potluck of the year is the annual Burke Lake Ride. This, I feel is a GREAT early season ride. I ve gone there now for 21 years and always look forward to going again. Please make SURE TO CALL THE TRAIL BOSSES if you have questions or to let them know you re going. That way they know to wait for you or know to call if something unexpected should happen that causes us to cancel. Well, I ve worn out my fingers with the hunt and peck method of typing. January 23, 2008 Dear Interested Citizen, Please join us for the: Ahtanum State Forest Recreation Plan Meeting West Valley Fire Station #5 10000 Zier Rd. Yakima, Washington Monday, February 11, 2008 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. You are cordially invited to be part of the Ahtanum State Forest (ASF) Recreation planning process. On February 11, 2008 the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will hold a public meeting to begin the recreation planning process for state Trust land within the ASF. The goal for this plan is to guide recreation management for the ASF, a 76,000 acre block of forested state Trust land located approximately 20 miles west of Yakima, WA (please see map). DNR has started gathering information related to recreation in the ASF and we look forward to discussing how the area adds to your recreation experience. Throughout this planning process, there will be many opportunities for you to be involved and provide your thoughts and input, including public meetings and collaboration with DNR staff. As part of this planning effort we will be coordinating a citizen based Recreation Planning Committee. In addition to the committee, there will be opportunities for the public to help conduct field inventories of the recreation sites and trails in the planning area. Issue No. 30, February 2008 Byron s Dutch Oven Recipes Mississippi Mud Cake 1 Yellow cake mix prepared as directed. Mud ½ cup cocoa powder 2 cups brown sugar 1 cup hot water 2 tsp. vanilla 1 tsp. cinnamon Topping 10 oz. bag semi-sweet chocolate chips ¾ cup chopped pecans Powdered sugar Line the bottom and sides of a 12 Dutch oven with heavy foil. To the oven add prepared cake mix. Prepare the Mud: In a separate bowl combine all Mud ingredients and stir until well mixed. Pour mud mixture over the cake batter. Bake: Cover Dutch oven and bake using 8-10 briquettes bottom and 14-16 briquettes top for 60-90 minutes replenishing coals after 60 minutes if cake is not done. Sprinkle chocolate chips and pecans over top of cake about 5 minutes before cake is done. Dust top of cake with powdered sugar just before serving. Serve warm with whipped cream. Serves: 10-12 Happy Valentine s Day!
