Check your tire pressure, as the temperature drops, so does your tire pressure, and while you are at it, a T-CLOCK inspection would be a good idea for anyone who put some miles on their bike going on vacation, Wing Ding, or for us that just decided to wait out the heat. The need to keep your Goldwing ready to ride never takes a vacation. I want to welcome Dave and Betty Story to the Chapter O staff as Assistant Chapter Directors. Dave grew up in Lincoln, Illinois; Dave is a proven leader having served 2 tours in Viet Nam as a Navy Seal. Dave then worked for Union Pacific railroad for over 39 years, retiring as a general manager. Dave has been married to Betty 33 years; they have 2 daughters, and 3 grandchildren. They live in Red Bud. Dave has been riding motorcycles for 35 years. As former Harley riders, Dave and Betty have now chosen the smooth ride of a Honda Goldwing. Dave and Betty took the OCP training on line and have decided to get more involved. I welcome them to the Chapter O staff. Dave, that Navy Seal training will come in handy! Congratulations to all that went to the Summer Rally. Chapter O had the largest chapter participation and we do not have to pay our chapter dues next year at the winter warm up. Vina and I wish we could have been there, but a family matter kept us here. A sensitive subject to bring up is the idea of a motorcycle club or chapter being a benevolent organization. By benevolent, I mean raising money and donating to a charity. A wonderful idea, however long before my time, a decision was made that Chapter O would not be a benevolent chapter. With that being said, the only charity that GWRRA supports is the Pedatric Brain Tumor Foundation. This Sunday is the Pediatric Brain Tumor, Ride for Kids, the cost is $35.00 suggested donation to ride and well worth the donation. All the money raised in St. Louis, stays in St. Louis. The ride is police escorted, all intersections are controlled and route is in the 50 to 60 mile range. A sack lunch is waiting at the end. You get to see and meet the doctors researching cures, the children battling this horrible disease, and those that are survivors. Dan Ribbing normally leads
continue this ride, leave from Flying J at the intersection of 270 and 111, KSU at 8:30. This is a ride you will make an effort to go on every year. Sunday is also the Edwardsville D.A.R.E. Benefit Car Show. I copied this from their web page: Car Show takes place at the Edwardsville High School Sports Complex, 6161 Center Grove Rd. & Hwy 157, Edwardsville, IL 62034. The D.A.R.E. Committee will be holding their 20th Annual Car, Truck, and Motorcycle Show. Entry fee is $15.00 and Display is only $10.00. All proceeds will benefit the D.A.R.E. program. We have 49 class listing for cars and trucks, and 11 for motorcycles (one class per entry). Dash plaques to the first 250 entries with Hat pins to the first 50 Motorcycle entries. Free photo's to all entrants by professional photographer, Lt. Scott Evers. The Filling Station Diner will be serving great food and drinks in an air-conditioned cafeteria. Free games and special events for the children provided by the Edwardsville YMCA. Additional events taking place throughout the day will include a silent auction, entertainment, vendor booths, and a 50/50 drawing. Bill Cook will have a MAD display. If anyone is going to the Region Rally over Labor Day, the Illinois District has been asked to provide security to the vendor area, see Dan Ribbing. During the Southern Illinois Ride In, Chapter O has been asked to help with registration and the people games. Let me know if you can help. So fall is coming, some of the best riding is coming up. There is the New Baden D.A.R.E ride, the Missouri A to Z poker Run, and the Southern Illinois Ride In. I have already seen some cornfields start being harvesting; combining what ever has survived the drought. This has not been a good year for agriculture and for some of us, riding. The need to ride aware however never changes. As the temperatures lower, the political season is heating up and emotions this year, are running high. Being agitated, or distracted while operating a car or a motorcycle is a hazard. A local TV station asked what new Olympic sport would viewers like to see; my suggestion is to ride a motorcycle, accident free. Let s all go for the GWRRA gold standard of Fun, Safety and Knowledge. Keep the rest of the riding season, accident free. Ride Safe. ILLINOIS SUMMER RALLY in Rock Falls BY: Roy Miller Twenty-four members from Chapter O traveled up to Rock Falls to participate in this year s Summer Rally during 3-5 August. I believe Walter & Jean Potwora, Jim & Gail Caminiti, Dan & Martha Ribbing on Thursday to assist in setting up at the Rally. To get an early start as to not be directly in the heat, the new Assistant Chapter Directors, Dave & Betty Story, along with Dan & Carol Evans, Bob & Jill Moore, Ed & Sue Roberts, and Roy & Cheryl Miller traveled very early on Friday morning. Upon arrival several members took part in the games such as Wingo. This year instead of tickets being given to each game recipient, GWRRA Auction Play Money was given out. The object this year was each GWRRA member would bid on the prizes to be given away instead of placing their tickets into the bags then having them drawn out after Saturday s dinner. Late in the afternoon Larry & Lorraine Kolling along with Jim & Vicki Dillard joined the rest of the group. There was a selfguided Mural Tour, and a self-guided MAD Poker Run to four memorials. The organizers posted several hints to the Scavenger Hunt inside and outside throughout the hotel. A Vendor Walk was added, GWRRA members were given an index card, we just had to ask each Vendor to sign off the card and allowed the member to review the Vendor wares. Friday evening we were all treated to a discount dinner across from the hotel at Candle Light Inn. The food and service were both very good. Unfortunately the Party by the Pool was somewhat a bust due to the heat of the day and the pool area not being air-conditioned but the music sounded good. There were two significant events on Saturday the No Zone Truck, this allowed GWRRA members to sit up in a 18 Wheel Semi Truck to look through the driver s mirrors where three Gold Wings staged on both sides of the truck. The emphasis here was to give GWRRA members a view as to blind spots in the trucker s view. Then there was the Crash Scene Re-enactment. Members of the local Rock Falls Police, Fire and EMT team participated in this very surreal enactment. An EMT spokesperson talked through each process starting with calling 9-1-1, and answering the questions based on what the accident involved. The heat of the day was a big factor where members did not participate in some of the other outdoor events. The parade scheduled for Saturday was canceled due to the incoming storm some of us had some pretty wet seats afterwards. On Saturday evening just before dinner, our District Director Dan Ribbing, introduced the visitors to the Rally. And the winners that participated in the various events. For dinner we were treated to a buffet meal consisting of roast beef, chicken, salad, and potatoes and gravy. After dinner the fun began, with several members hovering around the front of the dining room and where the bidding began. Numerous members had well over a million play dollars to bid on the numerous gifts. At times Chapter O members were even bidding against other Chapter O members. I believe all Chapter O members will agree this was much more entertaining than just drawing tickets out of a bag. As the picture shows, one of the Chapter O couples really raked in the prizes. They required some extra storage space with Bill & Cheryl Cook to take their wares home while they joined us along with Ray & Mary Ruder for a ride around the Michigan Lake! 4
