T H Gold Wing Road Riders Association Northeast Region B, Maryland District, Chapter B www.gwrramdb.org Where Do You Want To Go? E L I N E Submied by K Trass With the New Year well on its way and spring approaching the tle is a queson I have every year. I am a blessed guy, Kids gone, wife has her own calendar (which is overflowing with acvity), I have a prey freehand in where I can go. I have been on this quest to go to every district rally in the lower 48. If it were not for some mechanical difficules the last couple of years my quest would almost be done. So what you will read in this piece is not where I am going but my methodology in determining where to go. The first consideraon one must take into account is me. How much me do I have to go anywhere? This is the most basic element in planning a ride that will take mulple days. Vacaon me is precious and unless you work as a teacher like me it is difficult to get two weeks off at a me. During my Navy me and when I did work all year round most trips were what I could do with a four day weekend. As an IBA rider any place within a 1000 miles was possible, for example here to St. Louis. So how much of your me do you want to put on your bike vs me at the stop is the queson of the day. Time decided, now where to go? Before I centered on a goal of GWRRA District aendance I pondered the queson a lot. I would base my riding on a central theme to pick locaons. A theme such as food fesvals. I made a list of the favorite foods I like and then search the web and see if there a food fesval around that protein, fruit or vegetable. Surprisingly for almost every food I enjoy the most there is a fesval around it. The fesvals I aended that year included the Vidalia onions, buffalo wings, mushrooms, fried chicken, crawfish, oyster and chili. I sll have on my list to go to the Garlic Fesval in Gilroy, CA and the Hatch, NM Chili Fesval. I have also had themes like museums, bar-b-que, roller coasters and family visits. (Continued from page 1) If you are looking for ideas or places to go here in the area and naonwide I would suggest parcipang in some of the various tours you can find on line. I have parcipated for the past 5 plus years (and this year in the Tour of Honor, ( hp://www.touro@onor.com/ ), it s is about vising memorials for veterans and first responders. If you are a rally person, Lighng Customs (hp://www.lightningcustoms.com/motorcyclerallies.html ) has a comprehensive list of types of motorcycle based rallies (Non-GWRRA) to look at. If vising GWRRA rallies trips your trigger then you can start with Wing World magazine then go the region sites to get link to the district you will be vising. For those who are looking to something out of the ordinary take a look at this group, Team Strange out of Minnesota ( hp://www.teamstrange.com/ ). These folks have great imaginaons and offer out of the ordinary themes for rides. If you want to stay local, Maryland s Tourism site (hp://www.visitmaryland.org/) can give you some ideas. If you have the trip planned and you want to augment the ride with some good roads to run, I use MotorcycleRoads.US (hp://www.motorcycleroads.us/). This site has over 3200 roads mapped by state that are considered to be good motorcycle roads. They have them listed in four categories; redctwisty, bluecsweepers, greencscenic, and (I never use) browncgravel. More mes than not it has been worth detouring 30 40 miles to roll thru these roads. The final consideraon is lodging. It is best to decide how far you want to travel each day and make your reservaons accordingly. If you re like me you don t know when you are going to shut down, you put yourself at risk for finding lodging when you want to. There are a lot of folks on the road in the summer months and aher 8 PM lodging becomes a premium. Once I stopped one night in central Montana, only to find out there was a wedding in town. The six hotel/motels within 20 miles of the town were fully booked. I ended up traveling 30 miles off my route to find lodging. Now when I lodge day to day, I make my reservaon around 4 PM where I project I will be aher 8 PM. My tool for pukng together my routes is the Garmin mapping program, Base Camp, and it s predecessor Map Source. It has served me well for a long me. Google maps is a more accurate map so I somemes use it to find a locaon not in Base Camp but difficult to manipulate to customize a route. That s all folks!! Please have a great riding year. Commercial Message: If you have a ride you d like the chapter to take, suggest it to our leadership. They are open to inputs. If you need help planning the route I would happy to assist. Joke of the Month Long To Live Joke of the Month This biker lady has a heart attack and is taken to the hospital. While on the operating table, she had a near death experience. Seeing God, she asked, Is my time up? God said, No you have another 43 years, 2 months and 8 days to live. Upon recovery, the woman decided to stay in the hospital and have a facelift, liposuction and tummy tuck. Since she had so much more time to live, new roads to ride, she figured she might as well look nicer. After her last operation, she was released from the hospital. While riding her motorcycle home, she was run into by a delivery truck and killed. Arriving in the front of God, she demanded, I thought you said I had another 40+ years? How come you didn t pull me out of the path of that truck? God replied, I didn t recognize you.

From Your Assistant Chapter Director Many of the current members may not remember Bruce & Julie Malson. When I joined in 2001, they were active members. They held multiple positions in the Chapter, Rider Education being their passion. Under their reign they worked and the Hive had 100% participation in the Levels Program. The taught the Co-Rider Seminar and made sure that the Hive members attend the Road Captains course. They championed the Master s Level for the Hive. Because of their leadership, today I am a Level 4 Grand Master Tour Rider. Thank you Bruce and Julia! The year they were selected as GWRRA International Couple of the Year was also the first time, that anyone Chapter held all four levels simultaneously. I don t believe that has ever been repeated. The couples were James Bradford & Lillian Cruz- Bradford, Chapter; Richard & June Reynolds, District; Hampton & ShaRon Conway, Region B; and Bruce & Julia Malson, International. Page 5 Both Bruce & Julia are to this day passionate about the Motorist Awareness Program (MAP). They were selected as GWRRA s International Motorist Awareness Directors. They created the first seminar taught by GWRRA and brochures that were distributed to the riding public and sister Regions and Chapters. They raised the Motorist Awareness Program to the next level. They created the MAP patch which is still in existence today. Reggie Mitchell is part of the Couple of the Year family. He and Renee were Assistant Chapter Directors of Chapter B. Please continue to keep him in your prayers. Spaghetti Bingo is right around the corner. While visiting Chapter I, Chapter H mention that registration was low for their fundraiser. I want to reminder everyone about the importance of pre-registration. This allows them to plan for space to accommodate the event, and food purchases. As a Chapter we need to support our sister Chapter events so they intern will support us. Our Fun Day and Motorcycle Rodeo are quickly approaching. For us to be successful we need them to share the love. Upcoming Events: MD-H s Spaghetti Bingo Fundraiser, February 18, we are departing from Rips (Routes 301 & 197) at 2:30 p.m. This will allows us to find parking. Space is at a premium. Notes from the Educator You Are Getting Very Sleepy by Robert Vaughan It s our two archenemies, fatigue and drowsiness, talking to us again in their usual mono-tones. They are indeed powerful, but they can be beaten with a little knowledge and planning. Let s practice the old adage.know your enemy. What are fatigue and drowsiness? Fatigue is a weakness or weariness resulting from physical exertion or prolonged stress. It can be both physical and mental. Drowsiness is a state of lowered consciousness, reduced alertness, and dulled perception. Knowing what they are is only the first part. We also need to know what causes them and how to fight them. They usually occur in pro-longed riding because of monotony, tight schedules, heavy traffic, or bad weather. After two to four hours of continuous riding, the central nervous system becomes fatigued, senses become dulled, and perception is lowered. Highway hypnosis can sneak up on you. Highway hypnosis is the drowsiness caused by lack of visual and physical stimulation while riding. Several things contribute to it straight, unvarying roads, riding alone at night, few riding operations and being surrounded by the monotonous engine sound. How can you fight these enemies? If you ve had a hard day, physically or mentally, you need plenty of sleep before riding. Don t plan to start for Big Bend after work. Go home. Sleep. Leave the problems of work behind and get a fresh start in the morning. Plan the trip for no more than two hours of straight road at a stretch. Vary your speed, lane, and lane position. Listen to the radio, or better yet, talk on the CB or to your corider. Take rest breaks. They help to raise alertness levels. Riding demands more attention and requires more skills than driving. You need that extra edge --not just when you start your trip, but always. A little planning can keep you sharp and safe for the whole trip. From Your Assistant Chapter Director (cont) (Continued from page 5) team. The cost is $15 per person in advance and $17 at the door. District is accepting team registrations only! Please let me (lillian.cruz-bradford@comcast.net) know if you want to join the fun and bring your payment to our next Gathering on February 18. Northeast Region B Fun Day/Northeast Region B Couple of the Year Selection Process is Sunday, July 9, 2017. I will be reminder the Hive through July of the day trip to Pennsylvania. As a previous Maryland Couple of the Year, I know how up lifting it is to see in the audience members of your own Chapter and District smiling back at you will participating in the selection process. I hope everyone can ride/drive up for the day and support Charles and Shirley Dorsey, 2016 Maryland District Couple of the Year. Way to go Charles and Shirley!!!!!!!!! Finally, I wishing every member of the Hive a Happy Valentine s Day!
