President s Message Is it May already? I thought I just wrote a President s message for April. Maybe I should just quit going to bed at night because, I swear every time I wake up it has become a new month. The days are beginning to warm and daylight hours are getting longer providing plenty of tinkering time inside the garage and out. In the past, we have mostly thought up tours or other special events to get together once a month. Wouldn t it be fun to get a call from a friend to meet them for a cup of coffee or some ice cream, or get together to drive over to a fellow club member s place to give a hand on a project. Our club, I hope feels to many as one big extended family, it is and should be a goal for all of us to make contact with those who aren t able to come out due to health or other obligations and remind them if they need anything we are here for them. Our time in Boise, Idaho was well spent, what a beautiful part of the country. The Annual Meeting this year was closed but the board members answered any questions that were of concern. I look forward to answering any questions any of you may have during our General meeting. I also look forward to hearing about how the Kingman Arizona tour went. Car show season is upon us, and what better place to spark the interests of perspective future members, get out there and drive, meet others. It s not just the cars that keep us together it is the people. It will be June before you know it so start getting ready for the Alpine History tour. I am wishing everyone a happy month of May with safe driving in your travels. See You Soon, Sunshine (and Showers) Report Again, nothing has been reported to we hope all is well with everyone. Remember to call me at 949-492-4255 or email me at judynjohn@burrellteam.com when something happens, so I can send out cards or call. We care about all our members in the San Diego Model T Club. Judy Burrell Club Website Be sure to visit the club s website. Pictures of member s cars and car data are requested. There were approximately 35 members present (mostly the board) as such, it was essentially a closed meeting. National tours were set up for the next 2-3 years and the next meeting will be in Montana. Eirc and Jennifer s award reestablishing the Ben Yumori award for those who have dirven their Model Ts the most during the past year and have been a good ambassador for the hobby, was presented to Ed and Karen Archer of Haward, CA. (Ed was a previous recipient of the Rosenthal Award in 1974). Ed. Note: See picture elsewhere in this issue. Don Borchers was the 2016 recipient of the Rosenthal Award. Reports: Treasurer: Tony reported that we have sufficient funds to continue operations. He noted that the error that caused several member s names to be omitted from the roster has been corrected and that a new roster will be reprinted. A vote of the board authorized mailing of the new rosters to all members. He also noted that a great time was had by all at the Arizona Speedster Run. Tour Chairman: In the absense of Norm, Tony reported on two upcoming tours: April 23 Tour Coast Tour. Meet at the Mission Bay Information Center (foot of Clairemont Dr.) Park at the boat ramp parking lot (room for trailers).meet at 9:00, Leave at 9:30 AM. Coffee at the Phillips in Encinitas, no flower field tour, lunch in Carlsbad. Kirby Pray will provide trouble truck if necessary. May 3 through 5 Kingman Tour. To Chloride, Laughlin and Hackberry Store. Kirby Pray will provide trouble truck services So far, three cars are signed up. Details in the Ruckstell Review. Vice President: Jerry reported on his trip to Las Vegas to deliver a Model T that he assisted both the buyer and seller. The final negotiations included delivering the car to the new owner there. He had a good time and the transfer of the car was successful. Historian: Kirt had nothing to report. Member at Large: John noted that the El Cajon Cruise Nights would be starting on April 20. Also that the All Ford Picnic would be held at Santee Lakes on May 1. Editor: Chuck noted that he has received the registration paperwork for the Coronado Parade on July 4. He will send in the necessary papers and noted that we are limited to 10 vehicles. He also remarked that we have somehow lost the cookie signup for the remainder of the year and need cookie volunteers for May, July, September and November. He received two signups for May - Jerry and Ana Yeadon and Kirt and Drea Simpson, Thanks! Also, Susie Murdock signed up for November. We will continue to get more names at the next meeting. Other Business: The tour to the Railroad Museum in Campo is set for August 13 with Kirby and John in charge. We will meet at the Descanso Park and Ride on I-8 and go from there. Lunch perhaps at Kirt s sister s ranch in La Posta. With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:51 PM Respectfully Submitted, Chuck West, acting secretary 3

Ben Yumori Award Presentation Presentors, Jennifer Hubenthal Sayer (Ben Yumori s granddaughter ) and Eric Sayer with recipients of the Ben Yumori Award, Ed and Karen Archer (center) at the 2016 National MTFCA meeting in Boise, Idaho. Coastal Tour - April 23 by Tony Bowker Cars lined up prior to the tour The Phillips new abode We had a good turnout of nine cars and about 16 people despite a competing tour scheduled by the HVMTC club. We met about 9 am at Mission Bay, just north of the Visitors Center, where Tony handed out the tour instructions. The route took us through the North end of Claremont and then onto Genesee and past Torry Pines along Hwy 101. The traffic was not too bad and all went well. We reached the North end of Encintas where we detoured up some small hills to the beautiful new home of Roger and Eleanor Phillips. Eleanor had prepared coffee and goodies for all participants, various family members, and other folks who dropped by for the event. They have a great view of the ocean from both the front and rear doors. We also raided Roger s old T spares box, which he no longer needed as he sold his last T, for the November auction. After a really nice time, we dropped down the hill back onto 101 for the run into Carlsbad for lunch. Several of the members decided to stop by the Flower Fields while the rest of us wanted lunch. Unfortunately Fish House Vera Cruz is now closed. Several of us went to a small Mexican restaurant next door but others fancied something else, they were wise. At 2 pm we all reassembled for the run down 101, unfortunately Tony had problems with his Stromberg OF (again, three fails in 3 tours) and we left the Coupe in Encinitas where John Chapman drove me back to Mission Bay. We later found out that everyone got home with no further incidents. Great day out, that coastal road is just perfect for the speed of Model Ts. The group enjoying breakfast at the Phillips 4
