Thanks, Sabina Editor Plough & Fleece Community Pub update Horningsea Community Interest Company reports that it has so far received over 25,000 towards the medium-term goal of acquiring the freehold of the Plough & Fleece. What happens next? On Monday 3 September the CIC takes over the keys from Ro Asplin, and the entire following week sees a range of volunteer activities aimed at giving the pub a facelift and putting it in shape for the reopening party a week later on Saturday 8th September from 19:30. A list of jobs that need doing will be posted on the main notice board of the pub and we are arranging get-togethers for all those people who have already told us how they would like to help. The detailed programme is: Tuesday 4th September Spit and Polish: for anyone interested in joining the clean up and decorating team, meet at the pub at 11:00 and/or 19:00 Pub Quiz: anyone interested in helping to make the most of the P and F quiz night, meet at the pub at 19:30 Wednesday 5th September Gardeners World: for anyone interested in gardening and outside work, meet at the pub at 11:00 and/or 19:00 A Question of Sport: anyone interested in the petanque team (finalists this year!), darts, tiddleywinks, dominoes, football, cricket or simply watching special sports events at the pub meet at 19:00 Thursday 6th September Arthouse: anyone interested in music, crafts, arts, theatre, poetry, film nights, festivals and anything else arty meet at the pub for 11:00 and/or 14:00 and/or 19:00 Business Club: anyone interested in helping with marketing and business development meet at the pub at 20:00 Friday 7th September Grub Club: anyone interested in helping in the kitchen or with waiting tables or special food events meet at 11:00 and/or 19:00 The IT Crowd: anyone interested in IT, the internet, websites and social media meet at 8pm

Saturday 8th September First Annual Pub Workday and Party: join us for a whole range of practical workgroups from 10am and or just pop in and see an exhibition of the plans that each group has made to help us through our first year as a community pub. The party proper starts at 19:30! Everyone welcome, and bring your family and friends. Please contact Tony on 07764 922 385 or Mary on 07718 771 944 to volunteer for any of these activity groups. Between now and 3 December, Horningsea CIC really needs your money! If you re planning to invest, please don t delay. You can make a cheque payable to Horningsea CIC and leave it at the bar of the pub, or deposit funds in the HSBC account number 40 02 98 15, sort code 40-16-59 (Cowley Road branch). Also over that same period, grant applications will be made and processed with the Big Lottery, Village SOS, Cambridgeshire Community Foundation and Cambridgeshire ACRE. For further information contact: Tony Phillips 07764922385 tony@realife.org.uk Stuart Gibbs 07850211138 stuarttg@yahoo.co.uk Rob Balm 07913741241 robert.balm@gmail.com Mary Kent 07718771944 mary.kent128@btinternet.com or call the Plough and Fleece on 01223860795 The HRA invite you to the Annual Horningsea Boat Trip Sunday 9th September 14:00-17:00 Boats leave from Church End, Horningsea at 14:00 and return around 17:00. You are welcome to bring drinks and snacks, although we will be stopping at The Bridge to stretch our legs and have a swift half! Rain coats may be necessary if this summer is anything to go by! As in previous years, the boat trip is only for Horningsea residents and is free of charge. No need to pre-book this year as we will be taking 2 or 3 boats. See you there! HRA Apple Pressing Day The third Horningsea Residents Association Apple Pressing day will take place on the 29th of September 2012 outside the village hall. From 13:00 onwards. Bring your own apples from the garden, some empty bottles (and just a bit of elbow grease!) and take your self--pressed apple juice home with you. As with last year's event villagers apples will be placed in a communal pile for pressing. You can press your own fruit individually but the previous two events have been very popular and you might have to wait a while for some free space.

On the morning of the Village Apple Pressing day we ll trawl public apple trees in the village to start the "communal apple pile. If you fancy doing some picking, whether for the community or for yourself, then meet on the village green at 10:00. We ll finish at 12:00 with the main event starting at 13:00. Also we will be having an Apple Pie Contest again which is open to everyone. There is a prize for the best one and you may win the coveted Wooden Spoon!! Email hra.events@gmail.com or ring Chris on 07739 578 612 for details. Superfast broadband It's important to register your interest in superfast Broadband (SFB) and there is still time to do this. To recap, Cambridgeshire County Council is intending to introduce SFB to 90% of the county over the next 3 years in conjunction with broadband providers, but the decision to supply individual villages will depend on factors such as the interest shown by residents and how financially viable the providers think it will be. Horningsea is at the end of the telephone line coming down from Waterbeach and thus not a straightforward candidate for upgrade so we need as many people as possible to register to maximise our chances. The existing speed in the village is very poor in Abbot's Way/Priory Road although better at the north end of the village and the existing broadband can be affected by severe weather conditions. Superfast Broadband will be very important for good communication in the future as more and more services are computerised and put on the web. The figures from CCC to date are that 79 households in Horningsea have registered an interest which is only 37% overall, so this needs to be increased if we want to make a good case. There will be a door to door call round the village over the next few days to try and encourage the remaining 63% to be included in the survey. You do not have to be a broadband user to register an interest as residents can sign a list which is then submitted. If you are on broadband at the moment then it takes less than a minute to register at www.connectingcambridgeshire.co.uk The attached documents give further information about the whole project and how advantageous it could be to each household and the village community as a whole. South Cambs Local Plan Consultation The District Council is mounting an extra exhibition in Fen Ditton Church Hall from 16:00 to 19:00 on Tuesday 11 September. Attending the exhibition will allow you to talk to the council officers, see the consultation materials, see the maps for proposals for development in the larger villages, and talk about transport and proposals for job provision. They want residents' views on proposals for release of green belt, village frameworks and housing needs over the next 20 years. Do go along if you can: the proposals include a settlement the size of Ely, in Waterbeach!
