Greetings al-barran! From the Baron & Baroness In April, we had three great events Kingdom A&S, Sworded Affaire and the Albuquerque Renaissance Faire. Her Excellency attended the Kingdom A&S Collegium with a band of merry artisans from the barony. It was a day full of classes, camaraderie, and fabulous art displays. A Master of Defense was made, a Laurel got her leaves and various other gentles were recognized. Several of our members of the barony both taught classes. Duchess Cecilia and Countess Ingriðr taught a class called "The three F's of Norse Clothing: Fit, Fabric and Function" and Duchess Cecilia and HE Bronwen taught a class called "How to Survive an A&S Judging". The weather was beautiful for the event, a lovely spring day to enjoy our travels abroad! Next, we had the pleasure of attending Sworded Affaire in the Barony of Fontaine dans Sable. His Excellency had a wonderful time fighting in the many rapier tournaments. We had the honor of seeing Lord Lingormr gympe eykr and THL Anna Katherine von Telgte invested as Fontaine's newest baron and baroness. Many worthy gentles received awards. Among them our own Baroness Cerydwen was elevated to the Order of the Pelican! Last but not least, we had our annual demo for the Albuquerque Renaissance Faire. The weather was cold and blustery but that did not stop our barony!!! Many hands made light work of set up and break down and preparing and delivering lunch to the members who contributed their time and energy to this endeavor. Artisans displayed lovely works of art, the fighters entertained and delighted the crowd, the singers sang, the scribes demonstrated calligraphy and illumination and despite Mother Nature s best attempts the show went on. Thank you to everyone who helped make this year's Faire a wonderful success. May brought us both Spring Coronation in Dragonsspine and our own Grand Outlandish. At Coronation, we had to say goodbye to our beloved King Robert and Queen Magge (Our own Countess Fiona made their awesome stepping down garb with much love) but were honored to watch the step up of Their Majesties Leif and Ansteys. May they rule long and happily. We witnessed two peerages and an offer of admittance to the Order of the Laurel to Asenath de Winter. We saw members of our populace sworn in to serve the new Crown in a variety of positions. Coronation is a great experience. If you are newer and have not attended one, think about it for the future. The next coronation will be in the south, so it is a good opportunity to see how the magic happens if you missed this one! 3

Grand Outlandish was absolutely amazing! We thank everyone who made it out. There were so many wonderful moments, the Princess Bride Rapier Theater, The Knight Bannerette Tourney, Alexander and Stavros being offered admittance into the Order of Chivalry, drinking Mimosas with everyone who attended the Baroness tea, the melees, the bardic filled with magical songs and stories, a roaring fire, the bar close by and of course bacon, the delightful food at the Baron s feast and a hafla where lithe feet and light hearts danced the night away. The site looked awesome with all the new building and permanent gates and structures and they are just the beginning!!! We also had fabulous merchants, pleasant weather, lovely shade trees, the company of His Majesty Leif who was able to attend and the many hard working volunteers who all contributed to the awesomeness that was Grand Outlandish. In June, we traveled to Drystone and St Martin's Collegium in the shire of Drygestan. The site was beautiful, with tall trees and wild flowers, and due to the higher elevation and some clouds the temperature was quite pleasant. There were a variety of classes (many taught by members of the barony) offered from the martial and heraldic variety to a basic stitch class and a bardic class (and we had a small bardic too!). Lunch was a lovely discussion of virtues in agreeable company. Thank you Drygestan and St Martin's for a wonderful event! If you are planning to camp with the barony at Battlemoor, please contact us at coronet@al-barran.outlands.org. Let's make this year's camp the biggest and best yet. Marc and Bianca 4

Officer Missives From the Seneschal: Mistress Melodia Shaw Greetings al-barran! I hope this missive finds you well, and keeping cool. First of all I would like to thank Lady Belatumara filia Disideri And Sir Fierren Greenholm for autocrating a Grand Outlandish! Well done! The site was amazing, so much work was done in a very short amount of time. I hear there are plans for more work this year so please keep an ear open for that. I would also like to thank THL Dieterich for autocrating Nock on Wood, we had some obstacles but we overcame them in the name of a wonderful archery shoot, Huzzah! I would also like to announce we have autocrats for all our events for the rest of the year: Champions - Lady Phaidra Thebaia Day of A&S - Lord Hardwin Godricsson Toys for Tots - Lord Alexander of Lancaster Midwinter - HE Bronwen Blackwell Please reach out to these gentles with help and encouragement. I am still taking Bids for Spring Crown Tourney next year and announcing the bid deadline for Outlandish for next year as Sept 30th 2017. Please contact me if you are interested in doing any events. I have finished updating the Bid form and autocrats handbook. You can find them on the Seneschal's page of the website. I would like to thank Lord Edric, HE Diana and Master Y for their help in making this happen. I hope these new tools help to make this job easier. In Service Mistress Melodia Shaw 6

From the Reeve: Lord Edric Capellarius Greetings! During the second quarter, the Exchequer s office assisted the gate staff at Grand Outlandish! The gate did an outstanding job with their volunteers and the gate funds!! Thank you Master Adam, Mistress Catriona and all the gate staff and volunteers! During the event, I had the opportunity to discuss the gate process and money handling procedures with my two Deputies. I also want to thank the Quartermaster for assisting the Autocrats at Grand Outlandish! Also during the quarter, the Society has released a new Exchequers Handbook, and Financial Policy. My Deputies and I are in the process of reviewing the new documents to ensure that the Barony s financial policy does not conflict. You will find the first quarter bank balance report for al-barran included here and as you can see, the Barony is still in good financial health. As you can see, the Barony s funds have increased from last quarter, mainly due to the event income from Grand Outlandish. The funds have still decreased from the January 1, 2017 beginning balance, but we have a few more events in our future, including planned mini-events. 2 nd Quarter Financial Report As of June 30, 2017 General Fund $ 14,256.41 Travel Fund 519.24 Total: $ 14,775.65 From the Chatelaine: Sir Rowland de Grey of Lincolnshire Greetings unto all, I am happy to report that of the 10 or so Newcomers we had visit after the Renaissance Fair, 5 have begun participating in weekly practices of some sort. 8 of them are showing up to events or larger gatherings. All 10 are continuing to receive invites and updates. I hope you are as excited as I am to see this growth. In June, my Deputy Lord Hardwin, with the aid of Lady Phalem and Lord Wilhem fielded any Newcomer issues at the monthly al-thing as I was out of town. They did a great job. July has been full of events and practices. A small group of us did a show and tell for a church group and handed out business cards. We are working with UNM to do a demo for students. I plan to coordinate with Blaiddwyn to make it the best it can be. Battlemoor is next and we will have a host of Newcomers in the Baronial encampment! We are looking forward to seeing all the new faces at our premiere kingdom event. *8 new contacts made at the park and at the show and tell done at a local church. Sir Rowland 7

From the Minister of Arts & Sciences: Mistress Cerydwen de Gyrlyngton Greetings al-barran! Be on the lookout for the information about upcoming al-things as there is now a populace choice arts and sciences competition inside the Boys and Girls club on those days! We had our first one and Asfridr Riksdottir won for her beautiful bardic presentation! Documentation isn't required but if you have some, please bring it along. It will get you thinking and moving forward to the upcoming al-barran Day of Arts and Sciences which will be on November 18 at Sandia Prep located at 532 Osuna Rd, NE. The autocrat for the Day of A&S will be Lord Hardwin Godricsson. He has already started scheduling the classes for the day so if you are interested in teaching something or there is an idea to pursue for a class please let him know. You can contact him at hardwinthebrave@gmail.com. I am coordinating the competitions for the day. We will have a newcomers bracket again this year. This can be for new people to the SCA or new to the project and minimal documentation. We are also trying to work out a way that competitors can be a little free to attend classes and not have to sit with their displays... more to follow on that. The champion will still have to have 3 items in two different categories and documentation (those can be found at http://www.outlands.org/a-s-forms). If you need more information please feel free to contact me at mistresscerydwen@yahoo.com. If you would like to judge, please contact me - I will begin asking folks in the near future. A blank scroll competition will be held so Their Excellencies can have a store for the future events. The scroll can have calligraphy with the recipient's name and date left blank or just the illumination - please don't forget to sign the back of it! We will have a dessert competition at the lunch time with categories to include adult, period and children so all can participate! Documentation isn't required but an ingredient list is in case someone has an allergy to something. There will also be a Best Scorpion in any medium competition! Put on your thinking hats and let your imagination run wild... we have had scorpions made of beads, beer cans, bread, cake/icing, wire and pottery to name a few! The possibilities are endless! No documentation is required for this competition. Keep learning things!! Cerydwen From the Chronicler: Mistress Ymanya Murray Good greetings all! It has been a pleasure filling in for the Chronicler. This is such a fun office! It s a great thing to be able to sort through all of the news and the pictures in the barony and to put things out to commemorate all the goings on in our wonderful group. I must thank the folks that have put together the newsletter in the time that we ve been waiting for a replacement officer. Mistress Bennet put together two editions and Kultar put together another. It was great fun working with them both. 8

And now, I relinquish my interim status and welcome Constantine de la Cortez as al-barran s Chronicler. He will be officially invested at some point before the next newsletter comes out, and I ask you all to send him the wonderful photos and articles so that he can chronicle the wonder that is al- Barran! ymanya From the Web Minister: Sir Buqu Updates are being made to the website. The websites for Champions, Day of A&S, and Toys for Tots are in the works. From the Knight Marshal: Lady Phaidra Thebaia We currently have three days each week of fighter practice: Sunday afternoon, Wednesday evening, and Thursday evening. One of our local knights is also holding tournament practice for unbelted fighters once a month at our Baronial al-thing. The numbers are as follows: Sunday practice: average 20 unbelted, 6 chivalry Wednesday practice: average 10 unbelted, 4 chivalry Thursday practice: average 6 unbelted al-thing tournament practice: 13 unbelted al-thing regular practice: 6 chivalry No incidents or injuries for the month of June. Lady Phaidra Thebaia From the Rapier Marshal: Don Michael M Quilline Greetings from the Office of the Rapier Marshal, Barony of al-barran, The last quarter has been one of great changes and significant activity in al-barran s rapier community. After reaching a low ebb of both morale and participation at the beginning of this year, our numbers have increased significantly. We have had new rapier fighters, which also means new members of our baronial populace, first display their interest at the demo at the Albuquerque Renaissance Faire. We have also had veteran rapier fighters move either to al-barran or near our barony 9

from St. Golias and even from the kingdom of Atlantia. Due to this influx, our weekly numbers are averaging roughly a dozen active fighters. To manage this significant increase in participation, many of our veteran fighters are busy instructing our new ones. This has resulted in a great increase in understanding and skill among our new fighters. Our current goal is to ensure that all of our newer fighters are authorized by al-barran Champions. Practice for war (cue massive WAR chant here) has also begun, and our new fighters are learning quickly. Some are already beginning to distinguish themselves as strong learners, while some veterans are showing their merit as either instructors or small unit commanders. On another note, the Condottierri, al-barran s rapier guard, is currently being reassembled after a long period of inactivity. This will be trained as an elite unit, fully uniformed and ready to serve our baron and baroness. They are also being trained as a war unit, and presently, this training proceeds apace. All in all, the rapier community of the barony of al- Barran has rebounded in a dramatic way. Things are changing for the better across the board, with strong participation and high morale. This is an exciting time to be a rapier fighter in al-barran. I have no doubt that the future holds even more exciting changes. Semper Vigilans, Don Michael M Quilline From the Scorpion Pursuivant: THL Sáerlaith inghean Robeaird As the warrant of The Honorable Lady Saerlaith inghean Robeaird comes to an end the Barony will soon be in need of a new Scorpion Pursuivant (Baronial Herald). The Scorpion Pursuivant is responsible for all of the duties of a Baronial Herald, such as: Heraldic consultations of the populace in the registration of names and heraldic devices. Submissions of said arms and names. Voice Heralding for the Baron and Baroness during court and processions, if Their Excellencies so choose. They may also choose another person as their voice herald, if they so wish. Submission of court reports to the Kingdom Wimble Herald. No experience? Submit a letter anyway! Training can be made available. Letters of interest should be submitted to the current Herald, the Seneschal, and their Excellencies. Email addresses can be found here: http://www.al-barran.outlands.org/officers.php Searlaith inghean Robeaird, OSO Scorpion Persuivant 10
