O. Box 502, Silverdale, WA 98383-0502 www.kitsapdahlias.org General Meeting Chimacum Davi MB PK The January General Meeting showed why we are always expanding our dahlia gardens. Drew Brant expertly presented a slide show with the new introductions. As a side benefit to seeing the new dahlias, the slide show was also very informative, as seasoned dahlia growers in the audience gave their input on the qualities, both good and bad, of the various blooms. Many of us found ourselves adding to our 2016 wish list as we looked at these new introductions. For those who would like to add tubers which have stood the test of time to their garden, we have included the top 50 of the ADS Fab Fifty list in this newsletter. NW Flower and Garden Show Feb 17-21 Washington State Convention Center If you ve never been to the Northwest Flower and Garden Show, you are missing a real treat. Plan on spending at least several hours (all day is better) visiting the gardens, vendors and exhibits. If you need a break from walking, you can attend some of the informative (free) seminars. Spare yourself the stress of driving through Seattle and trying to find parking around the Convention Center by catching a taxi from the Ferry to the venue for around $10.00. (Three of us shared the cost) Several major dahlia suppliers will be selling tubers, so why not get started on your 2016 wish list? This year, there will be several new food vendors, and a wine tasting garden as well another reason to take a taxi!! Purchase your tickets by 11:30 PM on Tuesday, February 16th at the Early Bird rate and you will pay $17.00 instead of $22.00. Tickets can be purchased online at www.gardenshow.com or at the locations listed on the website. Of course they are available at the show as well. You will want to charge your camera batteries before you go as there will be many photo opportunities and great ideas to incorporate into your gardens. We hope to see you there! 1

REMEMBER: Snacks for monthly meetings are reimbursable up to $15.00 per month. Provide the completed KCDS reimbursement form, together with receipts, to our Treasurer. KCDS BOARD NOTES An updated Treasurer s Report and Budget were submitted, showing we are within our budget. The bill for rental of the President s Hall was received today (we will probably be given the Pavilion at the same price). Bob and Eric will be in charge of the Silverdale gardens this year. They will get a tuber list for the garden made up. Eric has ordered some tubers for the gardens from outside vendors. Debra and Allyn will put mushroom compost on the National Avenue gardens soon. There have been no volunteers to take over the Port Gamble grow garden. A motion was passed to order 50 copies of the Monthly Guide and 11 copies of the Dahlias of Today booklet. It was also decided to give away the club s very old copies of the ADS Bulletins and Dahlias of Today. The tubers were inspected on January 27th; about 350 were discarded. Bob has made up 100 flyers. He and the board members have taken care of the advertising. Bob will have Wanda s daughter change the sale dates on the signs. Bob will take care of getting food for the 4/16/16 tuber packing. The Grange submitted a 3 year rental proposal for 2016 2018, with costs to be the same all three years. The club would only pay for one year at a time. There were a couple of items that needed to be corrected before this is done, and Drew will contact the Grange to correct the errors before proceeding. Drew will fill out the forms for the club s insurance. He and Pat will give the dahlia presentation to the Indianola Garden Club. Bill will order trimming scissors which will be evaluated before a larger order is made. The 2016 KCDS show schedule info is being updated and will be sent to T. Schroeder. 2

It won t be long before Jazzy gets another chance to help dig in Wanda s dahlia bed. She was right in the middle of the digging process last fall as Wanda and Marv worked to get the tubers out. (Hopefully she ll make the transition from taking them out of the ground to leaving them in this Spring!) Many thanks to Mike and Shirley (pictured) and all our club members who supported the dahlia inspection process on January 27th. Most of the dahlias inspected were in good shape and put back to rest for another few months. Approximately 350 were discarded during this process. 2016 KCDS SHOW ARRANGEMENTS CATEGORY It s official the arrangement category for this year s show is Houses. There is a lot to work with in this category, which we hope will inspire many beautiful arrangements. Carpoolers Wanted: The Federation Spring Workshop will be held in Burlington this year on March 19 from 9:00 AM 3:00 PM, at the Burlington Community Center, 1011 Greenleaf Avenue. If you are interested in carpooling to this event, give Pat Paulsen a call or see her at the General Meeting in March. If you have not yet paid your KCDS dues, this will be your last newsletter. Also, you must be a current member to take part in the Members Only Tuber Sale. A membership application is included in this newsletter. 3
