SANTA YNEZ VALLEY ELKS LODGE #2640 FEBRUARY 2009 Santa Ynez Valley Elks Bugle From Your Exalted Ruler Ke!ey Sadecki January brought us a new President of the United States. No matter what your political beliefs are, we all have to look forward to a year of change and rebuilding. On that note, we will have a new Officer Corp to be elected for the upcoming Elks year. I encourage all of you to make a point to attend the upcoming meetings this month for nomination and election of officers. Come and show your support for the next year s officers, I know it will be a great year. I would like to thank on behalf of the members, Mary Pike, Sherry Duckett, Marilyn Hart and their helpers who were responsible for our New Year s Eve party. The lodge was beautifully decorated. We all had a great time, thank you. Last month we held a Sheriff s appreciation dinner in which we honored the Sheriff s Explorers program. The Explorer s assisted during last year s Old Santa Ynez Day (OSYD). They were responsible for shutting the streets down and crowd control. On behalf of the OSYD committee, I can definitely say that we could not have gotten through the day without them. It was wonderful to have these young adults here at our lodge dressed in their uniforms. We showed our appreciation with a generous donation to the Explorer s program in the amount of $1,000.00 from the OSYD funds. These funds are raised by shirt sales, hat sales and badges that we sell during OSYD. We are always looking for volunteers for this event. From parade duty, food sales, kids games, etc. Please contact OSYD chairman Mike Bosco Carricaburu, Nancy Beauchamp or myself if you are interested in volunteering for this event. Any football fans out there??? Please come down to the lodge to watch the big game. We will be enjoying the game in HD on a very big screen thanks to Jim Whittenbrock. Food, fun and friends.please come down and support the lodge. Next month will be my final words from your Exalted Ruler. It s been a fantastic year. Fraternally yours, Kelley Sadecki, Exalted Ruler P.S. There s an application for SYV Elks Jamboree 2009 on Page 5. PAGE 1

Super Bowl Sunday at the Elks This year we will have two big screens, thanks to Jim Wittenbrock, and i hear there is even going to be a Wii game. Add to that great food and drink specials and you can't lose. So come on down and watch the game and play some games. Proposed Members Nancy Valdes (Everett Pike proposer) Jerry Langager (Everett Pike proposer) Don McIntyre (Ed Chervet proposer) Gary Wooten (Everett Pike proposer) Applications for Demit Ed Charvet Karen Beckstead Clark Beckstead Editor s Notes My family along with our horses like to go to Oceano Beach State Park and ride/walk along the water, enjoy nature and feel the ocean breeze. Realizing that the weather one Sunday was going to be warm and the tide being out, I decided to load up our two horses, wife and daughter and head up to the beach for a beautiful day. Because there are three of us humans and only two horses in our family, I had the occasion to walk along the beach following the horses. Since my wife s work is putting on a party with a beach theme and needed some shells we thought this would be a good time to pick some up off the shore. I was looking for perfect shells. Then I came up to a beautiful shell, it had bold stripes, stood out in the water and sun. I reached down to pull it out of the sand and realized that it was missing a corner. It hit me as I was looking for that one perfect shell; like humans there are no perfect shells - only beautiful ones. As an officer of this Elks Lodge, I ve witnessed new members brought in and as part of initiation read a beautiful phrase, also known as the motto of our Order: The faults of our members we write upon the sand, their virtues upon the tablets of memory and love. We are not perfect. Whenever I go to a meeting or just go to the lodge for some rest and relaxation, I enjoy all of the faults of our members. We are all unique and different and as for one, I enjoy the qualities of us in one place. Outsiders could call it local charm. I hope you have the chance to come on down, enjoy our social quarters, dinners, fundraisers and just have a good time. I really enjoyed that day walking on the beach and picking up beautiful shells. My wife could have just gone to a craft store and pick up a bag of polished and perfect shells for 99 cents. But what I got to enjoy was worth a million dollars. PAGE 2

From The Station of the Esteemed Loyal Knight Ladies Corner January found us at Ruth Sahm's home. We were small in number but had an enjoyable evening as always. Liz had a construction program underway at her home so is planning on hosting us in March. We send our sincere condolences to Liz and family for their loss - with the passing of Liz's sister in Atlanta. Please plan on joining us in February at Billie Walker's. Date is February 5th, 4:00 P.M. Bring your quarters and a dish to share. Lots of activities in February and March at the Lodge. Watch your calendar to keep posted. We will be seeing new officers very soon.! Sincerely, Wilma Jenssen ESAU CO. SINCE 1983 BLINDS - DRAPES - SHUTTERS - UPHOLSTERY 1060 Faraday Street Santa Ynez, CA 93460 Gary & Judeen Esau 2009 is here and it s time to plan for the year. We have some great dinners planned, starting with Sally Hensley s chicken dinner on the 6 th of February, followed by a lasagna dinner prepared by Marcia and Andrea on the 20th of February. Now that s a great start. The Super Bowl is on the 1 st and we will have some great drink and food specials. On the 28 th, its Lodge Fundraiser time, so call and get your tickets before they re gone. I would really like to thank Mary and Sheri who chaired the New Year s Party and all that helped them for a great time. If you missed it on the 23th of January, we held our law enforcement dinner which as always was good. A big thanks to Monte,Ish and Bill for great tri tip and all those who helped them. Don t even think that I m not going to talk about the Jamboree, there is no chance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We have already had a few meetings; the next one is on the17th at 6.30. This is a big event, but if we can get enough members to volunteer just a little time,it not only becomes easy but even FUN for everyone. So come on down to a meeting and get involved in YOUR lodge. Campers Corner A great time was had by all at Oceano camping by the sand dunes. They are so amazing! We couldn't have asked for better weather. Very warm and clear. We want to welcome the Dokes Family to our group. They were first time campers. Bob and Doris provided champaign and open "house" for their new trailer. Many happy trips are wished to them. I enjoyed having my daughter Gail visiting from Florida and camping with me. Keith and Judy sure kept us fed! We had great meals with little effort for the rest of us. Thanks again. There were lots of games played. Different card games were enjoyed as well as a game table for the kids Saturday evening. Here is the Poker Tournament lineup: 1st place Monte Larsen 2nd Max Doke 3rd Brian McIntyre 4th Hal Couture Information provided by Monte. Olivia's family visited on Saturday. It is always good to have some guests. Sounds like Sylvia and Billy had a wonderful trip this past summer and fall. Some of us are envious and would like to follow suit with a group trip. We will see where that goes! The Alvestads have moved to another town nearer Branson. February will be a dark month but get ready for Atascadero in March. The dates will be the 20th to 22nd. See you there. Please call Bob or Doris if you haven't already signed up. It will be at the Elks Lodge.
